Lower urinary tract symptoms in elderly men: Considerations for prostate cancer testing.

Purpose: Both lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and prostate cancer (PCa) are common in elderly men. While LUTS are generally due to a benign etiology, they may provoke an evaluation with prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which can lead to a cascade of further testing and possible overdiagnosis in patients with competing risks. There is limited patient and provider understanding of the relationship between LUTS and PCa risk, and a lack of clarity in how to evaluate these men to balance appropriate diagnosis of aggressive PCa with avoidance of overdiagnosis.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is generally defined as non-cyclic pain perceived in the pelvic area that has persisted from three to six months or longer and is unrelated to pregnancy. The etiology of CPP is complex, multifactorial, with heterogeneous presentation, and includes several diseases such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. It may also be associated with sexual dysfunction, musculoskeletal disorders, and comorbid psychiatric symptoms.

Health risk assessment and quality reference values of potentially toxic elements in soils of the Southwestern Amazonas State - Brazil.

The geochemical processes involved in the Amazon soils formation are not totally understood because its geological and pedological features were formed during different geological events and different times. The Southwestern region of Amazonas State is an example of a region where the soils were developed from rocks formed by sedimentary processes and, nowadays, the soils continue receiving seasonal inputs from the Andes sediments. Data on geochemical patterns of this region are scarce, and there is no information about the possible effects of the natural or unnatural enrichment of potentially toxic elements (PTEs).

Introduction: Cervical length measurement using transvaginal sonography at 18 -24  weeks of gestation is used to identify women at risk of preterm delivery, who may benefit from treatment with progesterone to prevent premature birth. Few and conflicting data exist regarding the predictive value of cervical length measurement performed at later gestational ages. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the predictive accuracy for spontaneous preterm birth of a single cervical length measurement performed between 24 and 32 weeks of gestation in asymptomatic singleton pregnancies at low risk for spontaneous preterm birth.

Incomplete Kawasaki Disease with Peripheral Facial Nerve Palsy and Lung Nodules: A Case Report and Literature Review.

The diagnosis of Kawasaki disease (KD) is challenging and often delayed mainly in case of young infants and in presence of an incomplete disease and atypical features. Facial nerve palsy is one of the rare neurologic symptoms of KD, associated with a higher incidence of coronary arteries lesions and may be an indicator of a more severe disease. Here, we describe a case of lower motor neuron facial nerve palsy complicating KD and perform an extensive literature review to better characterize clinical features and treatment of patients with KD-associated facial nerve palsy.

Purpose: Platelet transfusions (PT) are commonly used as prophylaxis in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) and severe thrombocytopenia (TCP) before invasive procedures, in order to reduce risk of bleeding. The aim of this cost analysis was to generate a comprehensive estimate of costs of platelet transfusions in Italy, focusing on patients with severe TCP due to CLD undergoing an elective procedure.

Methods: The research was conducted in different phases: 1) assessment of a pre-specified framework for the identification of processes related to PT; 2) estimation of resource consumption through Delphi technique and collection of unit costs through literature; 3) development of a cost analysis to estimate the overall average costs per PT, focusing on a representative patient with CLD and severe TCP.

Mathematical modeling of microwave liver ablation with a variable-porosity medium approach.

Background And Objectives: Thermal ablation of tumors plays a key role to fight cancer, since it is a minimally invasive treatment which involves some advantages compared to surgery and chemotherapy, such as shorter hospital stays and consequently lower costs, along with minor side effects. In this context, computational modeling of heat transfer during thermal ablation is relevant to accurately predict the obtained ablation zone in order to avoid tumor recurrence risk caused by incomplete ablation, and the same time to save the surrounding healthy tissue. The aim of this work is to develop a more realistic porous media-based mathematical model to simulate a microwave thermal ablation (MWA) of an in vivo liver tumor surrounded by healthy tissue.
