Objective: Lung function testing is used in diagnosing asthma and assessing asthma control. Spirometry is most commonly used, but younger children can find performing this test challenging. Non-volitional tests such as airwave oscillometry (AOS) may be helpful in that population.

The response of other hepatic lipids, and acyl chain composition of lipid classes, would provide a deeper understanding of the response of hepatic lipid metabolism to acute exercise.
Methods: Female mice performed a single bout of continuous exercise (CE), high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE), or no exercise (CON).
Minimum dietary diversity for women of reproductive age (MDD-W) was validated as a population-level proxy of micronutrient adequacy, with indicator data collection proposed as either list-based or open recall. No study has assessed the validity of these two non-quantitative proxy methods against weighed food records (WFR). We assessed the measurement agreement of list-based and open recall methods as compared to WFR (i.

Previously, it was demonstrated that single sessions of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) are more effective than distance- and duration-matched continuous exercise (CE) on altering hepatic triglyceride (TG) metabolism and very-low density lipoprotein-TG (VLDL-TG) secretion.
Methods: Six weeks training using these modalities was examined for effects on hepatic TG metabolism/secretion, glucose tolerance, body composition, and bone mineral density (BMD) in ovariectomized (OVX) and sham-operated (SHAM) mice.
Iran has been active in human nutrition training for the past five decades, but the existing curricular programs do not equip the graduates with the knowledge and skills required for solving food security and nutritional problems of the country. Given this, the Nutrition Department (ND) of Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MOHME) initiated a curricular reform to develop responsive graduate programs in key areas of nutrition that fill the existing gaps in nutrition training with the goal of improving nutrition policy-making and program development, implementation and evaluation. ND called for a request for proposals for a project entitled "Graduate Level Training in Nutrition".

However, little is known about CHWs' perceptions of barriers and motivations, as well as those of the beneficiaries of CHWs. In Rwanda, which faces a significant gap in human resources for health, the Ministry of Health expanded its community health programme beginning in 2007, eventually placing 4 trained CHWs in every village in the country by 2009.

Although new drugs are in development, it is also essential to assess potential dietary therapies that could assist in the management of DMD. In the present study, we compared two diets, high-MUFA diet v.

We studied the effects of trans-fatty acids (2 % of total energy, TFA diet) on the loss of strength and aerobic exercise capacity (VO₂peak) with age. SAMP8 mice were studied at two ages (young, 25 weeks; old, 60 weeks) and on two diets (control vs TFA).

It is established that the fatty acid (FA) composition of skeletal muscle phospholipid (PL) is altered in mdx mice, but it is not known if cardiac muscle is similarly affected by dystrophin-deficiency. We tested FA profiles in PL and triacylglycerol (TAG) in cardiac muscle of 12-week old mdx and control (con) mice.

Sedentary, obese women were studied on three occasions in randomized order: endurance exercise for 60 min at 60-65% aerobic capacity (E), ~60 min high-intensity resistance exercise (R), and a sedentary control trial (C). After exercise, a liquid-mixed meal containing [U-(13)C]palmitate was consumed, and subjects were studied over 7 h.

We tested FA profiles in skeletal muscle phospholipid (PL) and triglyceride in mdx and control (con) mice to assess associations with disease state as well as correlations with grip strength (which is lower in mdx) and serum creatine kinase (CK, which is elevated in mdx).

Although the method was sensitive, resolution was insufficient for many of the biologically important FAs. We have developed an enhanced separation of 24 FAs by use of different column temperature, stationary phase, and mobile phase gradient conditions.

However, rigorous evaluations of these are scarce, so that conclusions on impact are tentative and based mainly on indirect evidence. The coverage of vitamin A capsule distribution programs has exceeded 70% in most study countries.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFNational programs for vitamin A supplementation and iodization of the salt supply were launched and sustained with high (but not universal) coverage in most of the countries studied. Iron programs (requiring daily or weekly supplementation, in contrast to vitamin A), which were distributed mainly through antenatal care, had lower coverage and acceptance. Constraints to supplementation were supply, awareness of health staff and communities, and (for vitamin A) insecurity with phasing out of the national immunization days, which have been a major vehicle for distribution.

The procedures undertaken to decide on large-scale programs followed conventional patterns in the 12 countries included in this study (11 Asian countries plus South Africa). Thus, a sequence of national surveys, institutional arrangements through intersectoral technical committees, legislation, incorporation of programs into national plans, and resource mobilization, including external assistance, was similar for all three micronutrients.

Methods: Healthy, formula-fed term infants (n = 78) were randomized to 1) routine milk-based formula with 8 mg DHA, 21 mg ARA, 110 mg alpha-linolenic (ALA; 18:3omega3), and 1,000 mg linoleic acids (LA; 18:2omega6) per 100 kcal (Lower-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids [LCPUFA]; n = 39) or 2) routine milk-based formula with 17 mg DHA, 34 mg ARA, 85 mg ALA, and 860 mg LA per 100 kcal (Higher-LCPUFA; n = 39). Fatty acid methyl esters from red blood cell (RBC) and plasma phospholipid fractions were assessed using capillary column gas chromatography.
Decompensated liver disease was investigated in 94 unselected Filipino patients sequentially hospitalized with Schistosoma japonicum infection. Liver damage was objectively scored from 3 (none) to a maximum of 10 (severe damage with encephalopathy) using a modified Pugh-Child grading system. Liver parenchymal dysfunction occurred in 52% of patients and was severe in 21% (hepatic encephalopathy or markedly prolonged prothrombin time).

Serial limulus amebocyte lysate assays (LAL) for endotoxin were performed on 40 patients with proven leptospirosis who were monitored for reactions after receiving either intravenous penicillin (24) or saline placebo (16). No Herxheimer-like reactions were observed, although 78% of patients had at least one positive LAL.

Therefore, 38 patients with severe, late Weil's disease were evaluated for heart and skeletal muscle involvement: 37% had myositis and 39% had abnormal electrocardiograms (ECGs). First-degree atrioventricular heart block and changes suggestive of acute pericarditis were the most common ECG findings.

We prospectively compared the ability of anti-venom and edrophonium (Tensilon) to improve paralytic symptoms in 8 patients envenomed by the Philippine cobra (Naja naja philippinensis). Twenty, 50 or 100 ml of Philippine cobra antivenom were administered in a double-blind fashion by constant intravenous infusion over 30 min. Even the largest dose of antivenom failed to produce marked improvement within 2 h, though enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and neutralization tests demonstrated that it possessed high titres of anti-neurotoxin antibodies.
