Purpose: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely prescribed for gastrointestinal disorders. Lansoprazole, a PPI, has been recognized for its potential effects of improving insulin resistance, reduction of oxidative stress, and improvement in atherosclerosis through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) induction. This study aims to investigate whether lansoprazole poses a distinct risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) compared to other PPIs.

Background: We explored if the administration of fluoxetine, recognized for its potential in adipocyte browning, entails a differential risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in comparison to other SSRI medications.

Methods: Using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan from 2000 to 2013, we conducted a retrospective cohort study. The exposure cohort comprised individuals prescribed fluoxetine for over 90 days (n = 2,228).

(1) Background: Recently, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2Is) have been reported to significantly reduce renal cell carcinoma (RCC) risk. However, the effect between individual SGLT2Is on RCC incidence in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) or heart failure is unclear. We conducted an observational analysis to explore type disparity in the prescription of SGLT2Is on RCC risk.

Oral cancer is a prevalent global issue, with oral squamous cell carcinoma constituting the majority of cases. Standard treatments like surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy are available but may have adverse effects. Molecular gene therapy, focusing on genetic mutations linked to oral cancer, presents a promising alternative.

Background: Several observational cohorts and meta-analytical studies on humans have shown that users of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) have a lower risk for new-onset acute coronary syndrome (ACS) than nonusers. However, some studies, including randomized clinical trials, reported the opposite results. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of a SGLT2i on new-onset ACS in a population.

Clinical studies have investigated the effects of using sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on the development of new-onset stroke (NOS) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), but the findings are inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the association between the use of SGLT2 inhibitors and NOS risk in patients with T2D and CKD. We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study using data from the Taiwan Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database for the years 2004 to 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • * A nationwide study in Taiwan analyzed data from over 52,000 participants, revealing a potential trend indicating that statin users had a lower rate of NOD compared to non-users, even after considering various factors.
  • * While results suggest statin therapy may reduce the risk of NOD in CKD patients, particularly those with hypertension, further research is necessary to confirm these findings and better understand the relationship.*

Background: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are common and widely used for gastrointestinal-related disorders. Lansoprazole is one of PPIs with potential benefits of anti-inflammation, reduced oxidative stress, and anti-diabetes. The aims of this study are to determine whether lansoprazole imparts differential risk of type 2 diabetes as compared with other PPIs.

Unlabelled: Nifedipine is one of the common calcium channel blockers (CCBs) for hypertension that induce peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1-α, which is envisioned as a potential therapeutic target in bone disease. The findings of this retrospective cohort study suggest that patients who receive nifedipine may have a potential protective effect on osteoporosis in comparison to other CCBs.

Introduction: Nifedipine was one L-type dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB) that can improve bone loss.

Background: Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) lansoprazole acts as a liver X receptor agonist, which plays a crucial role in the crosstalk of osteoblasts and osteoclasts in vitro and during bone turnover in vivo. However, epidemiological studies on the association between the use of lansoprazole and osteoporosis risk are limited. We aimed to determine the risk of developing osteoporosis in patients with lansoprazole use.

Background: Epidemiological evidence suggests the association of diabetes with an increased risk of stroke. Clinical studies have investigated the effects of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on new-onset stroke (NOS), but the results are inconsistent.

Objectives: To determine the association between the use of SGLT2 inhibitors and NOS in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM).

Background: The association of the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and incident dementia remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of incident dementia with the use of SGLT2 inhibitor.

Methods: This is a population-based cohort study utilizing Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database.

Background: Some observational studies have found a significant association between the use of statin and a reduced risk of dementia. However, the results of these studies are unclear in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study is to determine the association between the use of statins and the incidence of dementia according to sex and age-related differences in patients with RA.

Background: In the recent years, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been found to be associated with a higher risk of new-onset osteoporotic fracture (NOF). However, the existence of such an association in the COPD patients receiving statin treatment remains unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the association between COPD and NOF in statin-treated patients.

Several studies have shown that statin users have a lower risk of new-onset dementia (NOD) compared nonusers. However, other studies have shown opposite results. In this study, we investigated the association between the use of statins and the development of NOD.

Background: Several observational cohort and meta-analytical studies in humans have shown that statin users have a lower risk of fractures or greater bone mineral densities (BMD) than nonusers. However, some studies including randomized clinical trials have the opposite results, particularly in Asian populations.

Objective: This study investigates the impacts of statins on new-onset osteoporosis in Taiwan.

Background: Statins have been linked to new-onset osteoporotic fractures (NOFs), and different statins may alter the risk for the development of NOFs.

Aim: In this study, we investigated the association between different statins and the development of NOFs.

Patients And Methods: This was a longitudinal cohort study performed using data from claim forms submitted to the Taiwan Bureau of National Health Insurance, including case patients with NOFs from January 2004 to December 2013 and non-NOF subjects.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the plasma soluble receptor for advanced glycation end-products (sRAGE) play a major role in developing macrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes, including peripheral arterial occlusion disease (PAOD). Cilostazol is an antiplatelet, antithrombotic agent, which has been used for the treatment of PAOD. We hypothesized that cilostazol attenuates the severity of PAOD in patients with type 2 diabetes through the augmentation of plasma sRAGE.
