Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the genetic background, clinical features, and treatment options for low-grade and high-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas (LGESS and HGESS) and undifferentiated uterine sarcomas (UUS) in light of recent changes in classification and staging.
  • The analysis included 72 LGESS, 25 HGESS, and 16 UUS patients, highlighting that LGESS has a 5-year overall survival (OS) rate of 94%, whereas HGESS and UUS rates are significantly lower at 53% and 25%, respectively.
  • Key findings indicate that poor OS in LGESS is linked to advanced stage, incomplete surgery, and lack of progesterone receptors, while UUS has

The standard treatment for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer is intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy, which is considered the only intravesical therapy that reduces the risk of progression to muscle-invasive cancer. BCG unresponsiveness, in which intravesical BCG therapy is ineffective, has become a problem. It is thus important to evaluate the effectiveness of BCG treatment for patients as soon as possible in order to identify the optimal therapy.

Objective: Gastric-type mucinous carcinoma (GAS) is a novel variant of mucinous carcinoma of the uterine cervix. As shown in the original Japanese group description, in recent studies, GAS represents a more aggressive disease than the usual-type endocervical adenocarcinoma (UEA). Detailed clinicopathological features of this variant remain to be elucidated in a larger series of patients.

A proposed mechanism underlying the effect of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) treatment for bladder cancer cells is as follows: BCG-induced crosslinking of cell-surface receptors results in the activation of signaling cascades, including cell-cycle regulators. However, the clinical significance of cell-cycle regulators such as p21 and p27 is controversial. Here we investigated the relationship between BCG exposure and p21 and p27.

A growing number of treatment options and active compounds in treatments have led to better outcomes for patients with advanced or recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer. We examined the association between progression-free survival (PFS), post-progression survival (PPS) and overall survival (OS) in phase III trials of second- and third-line chemotherapy for advanced or recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer. We aim to determine whether PFS or PPS is a surrogate of OS so that we can decide progress of disease is optimal endpoint for ovarian cancer.

Serum starvation induces binucleation in HeLa cells, but the effects of serum starvation on mitosis and the significance of binucleation remain unknown. We investigated the effect of serum starvation on mitosis and analyzed the growth of binucleated cells. The frequency of binucleation caused by cytokinesis failure in DMEM without FBS (0% medium) was higher than that in DMEM with FBS (10% medium).

The fourth edition of the World Health Organization classification set up new entities of endocervical adenocarcinoma (ECA), namely the "usual type" and "gastric type." These 2 types are considered to be distinct histogenetically because of their differing immunophenotypes, human papillomavirus (HPV) status, and prognoses. Usual-type ECAs (U-ECAs) are virtually always associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection.

Background: To determine the frequency of squamous cell change associated with endometrial carcinoma, to evaluate the relationship between squamous cell change and clinicopathological features, and to assess cytological findings for squamous cells with and without nuclear atypia in endometrial smears.

Methods: In 103 cases of endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the endometrium having both histological and cytological specimens, the frequencies and relationships between the presence and absence of squamous cell changes were evaluated, as were the clinicopathological features of such changes. In endometrial smears, squamous cells with and without nuclear atypia were clinicopathologically assessed.

"Invasive micropapillary serous carcinoma" has been proposed as a synonym for low-grade serous carcinoma by some expert pathologists. In contrast, Singer and colleagues reported that some serous carcinomas with conspicuous invasive micropapillary pattern (SC-IMPs) can show high-grade nuclear atypia. However, the molecular features of such tumors have not been well documented.

Since uterine cervical cancer is regarded as a radiosensive tumor, ionizing radiation is the most frequently used treatment modality against the disease. Although the crucial end-point is radiation-induced cell death, the tumors are not equally sensitive to radiation. Determining the criteria that may be used to predict tumor radiosensitivity is of importance; however, little success has been achieved thus far.
