Even though dynamic multidisciplinary team discussions are crucial for end-of-life care management and decisions concerning chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the details of the discussion contents remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify essential considerations in decision-making for patients with chronic respiratory diseases to enhance a consensus-based approach. A qualitative content analysis of focus group conversations on published clinical case reports in the Japanese community about end-of-life care for patients with chronic respiratory disorders was conducted.

There is a lack of research on older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) adults. This systematic review aimed to synthesize Japanese and Swedish qualitative research on LGBTQ adults aged 60 years or older following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Japanese and Swedish articles, published in English, were searched across ASSIA, CINAHL, Medline, PsychINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Sociological Abstracts databases.

Total pain in advanced dementia: a quick literature review.

This quick literature review aimed to organize information on the detailed components of total pain in older people with advanced dementia in a holistic manner. The authors analyzed qualitative data from relevant clinical guidelines or textbooks, focusing on certain types of pain and distress in older people with advanced dementia, followed by an expert panel review by research team members. In the search, the authors defined a person with advanced dementia as having a functional assessment staging tool scale score greater than or equal to six.

Text mining analysis of newspaper editorials concerning the COVID-19 pandemic from a healthcare perspective.

This pilot study aimed to examine the content of Japanese newspaper editorials concerning the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its change over time using text mining analysis. The authors analyzed qualitative data from the editorials of five national and 12 regional newspapers on April 7 and 8, 2020 (first state of emergency) and January 8, 2021 (second state of emergency). All analyses were conducted using KH Coder version 3.

Improving person-centered advance care planning conversation with older people: a qualitative study of core components perceived by healthcare professionals.

The non-medical needs of patients, such as values and personal preferences, are likely to be omitted from advance care planning (ACP) discussions because of a lack of readiness and awareness on the part of healthcare professionals. The aim of the present study was to identify core components perceived by multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to improve person-centered ACP conversations with older people. The study participants were healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, and care managers) working in different cities.

Interprofessional case conferences to bridge perception gaps regarding ethical dilemmas in home-based end-of-life care: a qualitative study.

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness and efficiency of interprofessional case conferences on home-based end-of-life care to bridge perceptions gaps regarding ethical dilemmas among different healthcare professionals and analyze essential issues extracted the interprofessional discussions. The participants could spend only a limited amount of time after their working hours. Therefore, we shortened and simplified each of three case scenarios so that the discussions do not last longer than 90 minutes.
