Background: Thyroid transcriptional factor-1 (TTF-1) is associated with the development of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and is a mutational target in lung adenocarcinoma with ILD. TTF-1 expression is also associated with the efficacy of pemetrexed-based chemotherapy for nonsquamous nonsmall cell lung cancer (NS-NSCLC). However, the relationship between TTF-1 expression and the efficacy of immunotherapy using programmed cell death 1 inhibitor (PD-1i), especially in lung cancer patients with ILD, remains unclear.

Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) typically arises from the rapid correction of hyponatremia. A literature search showed that CPM secondary to malignant lymphoma is rare, with only 11 reported cases. An 80-year-old woman presented with anorexia as her primary symptom and was subsequently diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) following an axillary lymph node biopsy.

Lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) is getting global attention as an a surgical option to reduce local recurrence in locally advanced rectal cancer. As the transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) is gaining popularity worldwide, a novel LLND approach was established adopting a two-team approach that combines the transabdominal and transanal approaches using the TaTME technique. This narrative review describes the advantages, anatomical landmarks, surgical techniques, and pitfalls of transanal LLND (TaLLND).

Preimplantation embryonic development is orchestrated by dynamic changes in the proteome and transcriptome, regulated by mechanisms such as maternal-to-zygotic transition. Here, we employed label-free quantitative proteomics to comprehensively analyze proteome dynamics from germinal vesicle oocytes to blastocysts in mouse embryos. We identified 3490 proteins, including 715 consistently detected across all stages, revealing stage-specific changes in proteins associated with translation, protein modification, and mitochondrial metabolism.

Objective: A novel approach to 3-dimensional morphometry of the thoracic aorta was developed by applying centerline analysis based on least-squares plane fitting, and a preliminary study was conducted using computed tomography imaging data.

Methods: We retrospectively compared 3 groups of patients (16 controls without aortic disease, and 16 cases each with acute type B aortic dissection and congenital bicuspid aortic valve). In addition to the standard assessment indices for curvature κ and torsion τ, we conducted coordinate transformation based on the least-squares plane, divided the centerline into 3 representative features (transverse, anterior-posterior, and longitudinal displacements), and analyzed the overall and local displacement in each direction.

Age-dependent sensory impairment, memory loss, and cognitive decline are generally attributed to neuron loss, synaptic dysfunction, and decreased neuronal activities over time. Concurrently, increased neuronal activity is reported in humans and other organisms during aging. However, it is unclear whether neuronal hyperactivity is the cause of cognitive impairment or a compensatory mechanism of circuit dysfunction.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to identify social determinants of health (SDOH) that contribute to health inequities experienced by Japanese patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
  • - An online survey of 2,083 CVD patients revealed high agreement on seven key SDOH factors, including employment, food insecurity, and poverty, which were linked to perceived health inequities.
  • - Factors such as younger age, higher income, and education levels were associated with a greater perception of these health inequities, indicating that similar SDOH issues seen in Western countries also affect Japanese CVD patients.

Tumor tissue collections are used to uncover pathways associated with disease outcomes that can also serve as targets for cancer treatment, ideally by comparing the molecular properties of cancer tissues to matching normal tissues. The quality of such collections determines the value of the data and information generated from their analyses including expression and modifications of nucleic acids and proteins. These biomolecules are dysregulated upon ischemia and decompose once the living cells start to decay into inanimate matter.

To improve clinical diagnoses, assessments of potential cardiac disease risk, and predictions of lethal arrhythmias, the analysis of electrocardiograms (ECGs) requires a more accurate method of weighting waveforms to efficiently detect abnormalities that appear as minute strains in the waveforms. In addition, the inverse problem of estimating the myocardial action potential from the ECG has been a longstanding challenge. To analyze the variance of the ECG waveforms and to estimate collective myocardial action potentials (APs) from the ECG, we designed a model equation incorporating the probability densities of Gaussian functions of time-series point processes in the cardiac cycle and dipoles of the collective APs in the myocardium.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the effectiveness of a noninvasive assay (Guardant Reveal) that detects circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in patients with resected colorectal cancer, which can predict recurrence without needing prior tissue tests.
  • Results showed that the assay provided sensitive and specific detection of minimal disease, with an impressive 81% sensitivity in later-stage colon cancer, and identified recurrences up to 5.3 months earlier than traditional methods.
  • The findings suggest that ctDNA testing could significantly enhance clinical management for stage II and higher colorectal cancer patients by offering a quicker and more accessible way to assess disease status.

Objectives: To clarify whether self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) placement for obstructive colorectal cancer (CRC) increases perineural invasion (PNI), thereby worsening the prognosis.

Methods: In total, 1022 patients with pathological T3 or T4 colon or rectosigmoid cancer who underwent resection were retrospectively reviewed. The study patients were divided into a no obstruction group (n=693), obstruction without stent group (n=251), and obstruction with stent group (n=78), and factors demonstrating an independent association with PNI, the difference in PNI incidence and severity between groups, and the association between PNI and the duration from SEMS placement to surgery were investigated.

Environmental viruses (primarily bacteriophages) are widely recognized as playing an important role in ecosystem homeostasis through the infection of host cells. However, the majority of environmental viruses are still unknown as their mosaic structure and frequent mutations in their sequences hinder genome construction in current metagenomics. To enable the large-scale acquisition of environmental viral genomes, we developed a new single-viral genome sequencing platform with microfluidic-generated gel beads.

Grain boundary (GB) strengthening elements, such as B, C, and Zr have been added in small amounts to nickel-base superalloys. However, their strengthening effects have not been quantified and no specific design principles for GB chemistry have been reported. In this study, we propose a practical computational approach for the GB segregation engineering of nickel-base superalloys.
