The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of various surface treatments on the shear bond strength between dental polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and adhesive resin cement. Two hundred and forty specimens were randomly classified into four groups: no treatment, sandblasted, sulfuric-acid-etched, and laser-grooved treatment. Each group was classified into two adhesive resin cement subgroups.

Oral Implant Treatment for a Patient Undergoing Molecularly Targeted Drug Therapy for Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia: A Case Report.

The primary concern in carrying out dental implant treatment in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia is the development of peri-implantitis. However, currently, the advent of molecular-targeted drugs such as nilotinib markedly improves the survival rates in such patients, and it is reported that remission status can be maintained for a long time without abnormalities such as a decrease in white blood cell count. This case history report discusses an 8-year follow-up of implant treatment administered during the remission phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia maintained using nilotinib.

Purpose: The mechanical properties of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) are ideally suited for fixed dental prostheses. However, PEEK typically has low adhesion strength to resin-based luting agent. This study assessed the shear bond strength between laser groove treated PEEK and resin-based luting agent.

Factors related to masticatory performance in healthy elderly individuals.

Purpose: Maintenance of natural dentition and/or prosthodontic rehabilitation is necessary for good masticatory function. Although other factors such as physical and oral functions are also important for masticatory performance, only a few studies have evaluated their roles. The aim of the current study was to assess factors associated with masticatory performance among elderly individuals, while maintaining and/or reconstructing all occlusal support areas.

Effect of polymerization temperature on the properties of autopolymerizing resin.

Statement Of Problem: The polymerization conditions of an autopolymerizing resin affect its physical properties, and at chairside, 3 different methods are commonly used: cooling in cold water, warming in warm water, and heating in hot water. However, the effects of polymerization temperature on the physicomechanical properties of autopolymerizing resin are unclear.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of polymerization temperature on the physicomechanical properties of autopolymerizing resin, including shrinkage, water absorption, surface roughness, amount of residual monomer, and flexural strength.

Prevalence of Torus Mandibularis in Young Healthy Dentate Adults.

Purpose: There have been only a few reports on the prevalence of torus mandibularis (TM) in young adult patients, and TM can have various adverse effects on oral and occlusal states in middle-age patients. This study was designed to determine the association between TM status and oral and occlusal states in young healthy dentate adults.

Materials And Methods: This was a cross-sectional study; the sample population included students at Hiroshima University (Hiroshima, Japan) who participated for practical education.

[Emphysematous cystitis with air bubbles in the vena cava].

A 76-year-old diabetic woman was referred to our hospital with an episode of high fever and sub-abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) of the pelvis revealed gas accumulation within the lumen and wall of the bladder and CT of the abdomen demonstrated bubbles in the inferior vena cava. She recovered by urinary drainage and antibiotic therapy.

Occlusal-supporting ability of individual maxillary and mandibular teeth.

This study aimed to analyse occlusal force, area and pressure for individual maxillary and mandibular teeth by assessing their occlusal-supporting abilities. Ninety-nine subjects (49 men and 50 women; average age, 24·7 ± 3·4 years; range, 20-37 years) performed maximal voluntary clenching twice for 3 s in both the intercuspal position and the intercuspal position with sliding movement from edge-to-edge occlusion, with a pressure-sensitive sheet placed between the maxillary and mandibular dental arch. Occlusal force, area and pressure of individual teeth were calculated by colour development in the pressure-sensitive sheet with special analytical equipment and software.

[Long survival in patient with invasive renal pelvic carcinoma treated with frequentative resection of pulmonary metastasis and chemotherapy: a case report].

The dynamic viscoelasticity and water absorption characteristics of soft acrylic resin materials containing adipates and a maleate plasticizer.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of different plasticizers in soft acrylic resin materials to reduce leaching of the plasticizer and thus increase the durability of tissue conditioners. Samples were prepared containing different combinations of three types of polymer/copolymer powder and four types of plasticizer liquid (DEHM, DIBA, DAA and DINA). The dynamic viscoelasticity of each sample was measured after water immersion using a dynamic mechanical analyzer.

[A case of primary urothelial carcinoma of the prostate].

A 42-year-old male diagnosed with primary urothelial carcinoma of the prostate (T4NOM0) underwent pelvic exenteration, and lymph node dissection. Two courses of systemic chemotherapy (gemcitabine and carboplatin) were performed. This patient is alive without any evidence of tumor recurrence at 6 months after surgery.

[Blind-ending bifid ureter: report of a case].

A case of blind-ending bifid ureter is presented. A 33-year-old woman was admitted with the compliant of right flank pain. Drip infusion pyelography and retrograde pyelography showed a right blind-ending bifid ureter (about 26 cm in length) at a site about 4 cm superior to the right ureteral opening.

Prognostic value of 2-deoxy-2-[F-18]fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography imaging for patients with prostate cancer.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of measuring glucose metabolism of primary prostate cancer lesions, using 2-Deoxy-2-[F-18]Fluoro-D-Glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET).

Procedures: Forty-two patients with prostate cancer were investigated with FDG-PET, and standardized uptake value (SUV) of the prostate was calculated. After PET study, radical prostatectomy was performed in 17 patients (RPT group), and endocrine therapy in 25 patients (ET group).

Expression of c-MET/HGF receptor mRNA and protein in human non-malignant and malignant prostate tissues.

We previously reported the expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), a ligand for c-MET, at the level of mRNA and protein in human prostate tissues. The present study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between c-MET expression and cancer cell proliferation or effect of cancer therapy. The expression both in mRNA and protein levels of c-MET proto-oncogene was determined semi-quantitatively by reverse transcription-competitive polymerase chain reaction (RT-competitive PCR) and Western blot analysis for prostate tissues from 32 Japanese male subjects.

Enhanced hepatocyte growth factor level in human prostate cancer treated with endocrine therapy.

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) has been revealed to have various functions such as regeneration, cancer invasion and tumor suppression in normal and cancer cells of different organs. To compare HGF expression in non-malignant prostate tissues and prostate cancers pretreated with or without neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (pretreated PC and non-treated PC), the amounts of HGF protein and mRNA were quantitated by Western blot analysis and reverse transcription-competitive polymerase chain reaction. The biologically active HGF (baHGF), which was converted by an HGF activator protein from secretory type proHGF, showed significantly higher expression in pretreated PC than in non-treated PC.

[Primary malignant lymphoma of the bladder: a case report].

An 86-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with genitourinary bleeding. Abdominal computerized tomography demonstrated a low density mass on the posterior wall of the bladder. Cystoscopy revealed a nonpapillary bladder tumor.

[Intracavitary bacillus Calmette-Guerin therapy for upper tract transitional cell carcinoma].

Four patients with upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma were treated with bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) via a percutaneous nephrostomy tube or a retrograde ureteral catheter. A 68-year-old female and an 80-year-old male had carcinoma in situ (CIS) in the left upper urinary tract (cases 1 and 2). A man aged 47 had CIS in the left upper urinary tract, bladder, and prostatic urethra (case 3).

A clinical statistic survey was carried out on the patients and disease experienced at the outpatient clinic of our Department of Urology, between 1983 and 1993. [Morphological changes in major pelvic ganglion neurons and histological structure of bladder using rat model of partial urethral ligation].

Ninety six rats were divided into 4 groups (normal control group (N = 4), ligation group (N = 20), ligation-removed group (N = 36), and sham surgery group (N = 36)). The neuronal size of the 4-week ligated rats returned to normal 6 weeks after removal of the ligation. Rats ligated for 7, 11 and 20 weeks also exhibited a significant increase in the mean area but they could not make a complete recovery after removal of ligation for 6 weeks.

The numbers of inpatients and operations have been increasing since 1991. The majority of the inpatients are those with neoplastic disorders, and the number is steadily increasing every year.
