The transient dynamics of photocurrents for poly((4-diphenylamino)benzyl acrylate) (PDAA)-based photorefractive (PR) polymers sensitized with perylene bisimide derivative N,N'-diisopropylphenyl-1,6,7,12-tetrachloroperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyl bisimide (PBI) at various composition ratios were studied. The PR polymer included (4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)methanol (TPAOH) photoconductive plasticizer and (4-(azepan-1-yl)-benzylidene) malononitrile nonlinear optical dye as well, which are needed for inducing PR effects. All the photocurrents measured at 640 nm were well simulated by a two-trapping site model considering photocarrier generation and recombination processes of the charge transfer (CT) complex between PBI and PDAA.

The efficient immobilization of redox mediators remains a major challenge in the design of mediated enzyme electrode platforms. In addition to stability, the ability of the redox-active material to mediate electron transfer from the active-site buried enzymes, such as flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FADGDH) and lactate oxidase (LOx), is also crucial. Conventional immobilization techniques can be synthetically challenging, and immobilized mediators often exhibit limited durability, particularly in continuous operation.

The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) has reached more than 19% due to the rapid development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). To compete with the PCEs (26%) of commercialized silicon-based inorganic photovoltaics, the drawback of OPVs should be minimized. This drawback is the intrinsic large loss of open-circuit voltage; however, a general approach to this issue remains elusive.

The development of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs), represented by ITIC, has contributed to improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Although tuning the electronic structures to reduce the exciton binding energy (E) is considered to promote photocharge generation, a rational molecular design for NFAs has not been established. In this study, we designed and developed two ITIC-based NFAs bearing spiro-substituted bithiophene or biphenyl units (named SpiroT-DCI and SpiroF-DCI) to tune the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) distribution of NFAs.

Enzyme-mediator bioconjugation is emerging as a building block for designing electrode platforms for the construction of biosensors and biofuel cells. Here, we report a one-pot bioconjugation technique for flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FAD-GDH) and thionine (TH) using a series of cross-linkers, including epoxy, -hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), and aldehydes. In this technique, FAD-GDH and thionine are conjugated through an amine cross-linking reaction to generate a redox network, which has been successfully employed for the oxidation of glucose.

Kyushu Shinkansen and conventional railway lines run parallel in the areas 5 km north of Kumamoto Station (northern area) and 12 km south of the station (southern area). Following the operation of the Kyushu Shinkansen Line in 2011, the adjacent conventional railway line in the north was elevated, a new station was operated in the south, and large earthquakes struck the Kumamoto area from March to April 2016. Sleep disturbances were compared before and after the interventions and earthquakes based on noise source (Shinkansen and conventional railways), area (northern and southern), and house type (detached and apartment) through socio-acoustic surveys from 2011 to 2017.

Perspiration plays a pivotal role not only in thermoregulation but also in reflecting the body's internal state and its response to external stimuli. The up-to-date skin-based wearable platforms have facilitated the monitoring and simultaneous analysis of sweat, offering valuable physiological insights. Unlike conventional passive sweating, dynamic normal perspiration, which occurs during various activities and rest periods, necessitates a more reliable method of collection to accurately capture its real-time fluctuations.

The photorefractive properties of triphenylamine polymer-based composites with various composition ratios were investigated via optical diffraction, response time, asymmetric energy transfer, and transient photocurrent. The composite consisted of a photoconductive polymer of poly((4-diphenylamino)benzyl acrylate), a photoconductive plasticizer of (4-diphenylamino)phenyl)methanol, a sensitizer of [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, and a nonlinear optical dye of (4-(azepan-1-yl)-benzylidene)malononitrile. The photorefractive properties and related quantities were dependent on the composition, which was related to the glass transition temperature of the photorefractive polymers.

In this study, the wear resistance of nickel (Ni)-cellulose nanofiber (CNF) composite electroplated films on steel plates (JIS SPCC, cold-rolled steel) was evaluated, including their surface and microstructural properties. In the CNF sample, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized CNF was used. As a result of the ball-on-disk abrasion test, in which steel (SUJ2) balls were used as the counterpart material, the plated film obtained with the addition of 1 g/L of CNF to the plating solution showed the highest wear resistance in this study.

The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are known to serve non-image-forming functions, such as photoentrainment of the circadian rhythm and pupillary light reflex. However, how they affect human spatial vision is largely unknown. The spatial contrast sensitivity function (CSF), which measures contrast sensitivity as a function of spatial frequency, was used in the current study to investigate the function of ipRGCs in pattern vision.

Biofuel cells (BFCs) with enzymatic electrocatalysts have attracted significant attention, especially as power sources for wearable and implantable devices; however, the applications of BFCs are limited owing to the limited O supply. This can be addressed by using air-diffusion-type bilirubin oxidase (BOD) cathodes, and thus the further development of the hierarchical structure of porous electrodes with highly effective specific surface areas is critical. In this study, a porous layer of gold is deposited over magnesium-oxide-templated carbon (MgOC) to form BOD-based biocathodes for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).

It is essential to construct a biofuel cell-based sensor and develop an effective strategy to detect glucose without any potentiostat circuitry in order to create a simple and miniaturized device. In this report, an enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) is fabricated by the facile design of an anode and cathode on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). To construct the anode, thionine and flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FAD-GDH) are covalently immobilized via a crosslinker to make a cross-linked redox network.

Previous research into the effects of blue light on visual-spatial attention has yielded mixed results due to a lack of properly controlling critical factors like S-cone stimulation, ipRGCs stimulation, and color. We adopted the clock paradigm and systematically manipulated these factors to see how blue light impacts the speed of exogenous and endogenous attention shifts. Experiments 1 and 2 revealed that, relative to the control light, exposure to the blue-light background decreased the speed of exogenous (but not endogenous) attention shift to external stimuli.

In this study, magnesium oxide (MgO)-templated mesoporous carbon (MgOC) and chitosan cross-linked with genipin (chitosan-genipin) were considered bio-composite inks for screen-printed bioanodes. The fabrication processes were optimized using rheological and structural data, and a bioanode ink containing glucose oxidase (GOx) and 1,2-naphthoquinone (1,2-NQ) was successfully developed. The optimal bioanode-ink contained MgOC pre-treated by washing to achieve a hydrophilic and neutral surface, which helped maintain enzyme activity and resulted in a highly porous electrode structure, which is essential for the accessibility of glucose to GOx.
