Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) often leads to the loss of urinary sensation, making urination difficult. In a previous experiment involving six healthy participants, we measured heartbeat-induced acoustic pulse waves (HAPWs) at the mid-back, calculated time-series power spectra of heart rate gradients at three ultralow/very low frequencies, distinguished and formulated waveform characteristics (one characteristic for each power spectrum, nearly uniform across participants) at times of increased urine in the bladder and heightened urges to urinate, and developed an algorithm with five of these power spectra to identify when urination is needed by extracting the waveform portion (continuous timepoints) where all of the characteristics were consistent with the formulated characteristics. The objective of this study was to verify the validity of the algorithm fed with data from measured HAPW of participants with SCI and to adapt the algorithm for these individuals.

We investigated the implementation of safe work practices for preventing low back pain (LBP) among care workers (CWs) to ascertain the interrelationships between appropriate device use and the frequency of working postures/movements that cause LBP. This cross-sectional study used an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire of CW team leaders (one per facility) working at long-term care facilities in Japan. Data on bed-height adjustment, the use of devices for repositioning in bed and bed- and wheelchair-transfer assistance, and the frequency of awkward postures/movements were cross-tabulated and analyzed using Haberman's residuals.

Article Synopsis
  • Secondary central nervous system involvement (sCNSi) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a serious condition, with a study showing that only 5.1% of lower-risk patients developed sCNSi over a median follow-up of 4.9 years.
  • The five-year cumulative incidence of sCNSi varied based on risk levels (4.0% for low risk to 11.5% for high risk), with lesions most commonly found in the stomach and paranasal cavity, the latter being a significant risk factor.
  • Despite a low incidence in lower-risk patients, the median overall survival after developing sC

The umbilicus accumulates more dirt than other body surfaces and is difficult to clean. Hygiene in this area is vital, particularly for surgery, because of its proximity to the laparotomy site. Although microorganisms in the umbilicus have been extensively examined, those in umbilical dirt have not due to the lack of an efficient method of collection.

In this study we have examined the feasibility of a program based on the health belief model (HBM), for its effectiveness in improving lifestyle-related diseases in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), which are often complicated with physical conditions. In this model, we attempted to enable patients to identify a "threat" and to find "balance between benefits and disadvantages". Subjects were carefully selected from among psychiatric patients by excluding any bias.

Targeted protein degradation (TPD), using chimeric molecules such as proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs), has attracted attention as a strategy for selective degradation of intracellular proteins by hijacking the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). However, it is often difficult to develop such degraders due to the absence of appropriate ligands for target proteins. In targeting proteins for degradation, the application of nucleic acid aptamers is considered to be effective because these can be explored using systematic evolution of ligand by exponential enrichment (SELEX) methods.

Background: Human health status can be measured on the basis of many different parameters. Statistical relationships among these different health parameters will enable several possible health care applications and an approximation of the current health status of individuals, which will allow for more personalized and preventive health care by informing the potential risks and developing personalized interventions. Furthermore, a better understanding of the modifiable risk factors related to lifestyle, diet, and physical activity will facilitate the design of optimal treatment approaches for individuals.

The BLd regimen, which is a triplet regimen of bortezomib (Bor), lenalidomide (Len), and dexamethasone (Dex), is effective against newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM). However, non-hematological toxicities, such as peripheral neuropathy (PN), often hamper long-term continuation of the regimen, particularly in older adult patients. In this study, we examined the efficacy and safety of the modified BLd regimen with reduced-intensity Bor and standard-dose Len.

This study aimed to determine the effect of physiotherapists' physical burden caused by different bed heights during manual therapy. Thirty-three male physiotherapists performed tasks simulating lumbar massage and passive hip abduction range-of-motion exercise (ROM) on the beds with low height (LH) and adjusted height (AH), with each task performed three times. The anterior inclination angle of the physiotherapist's trunk was measured, the surface electromyograms of the erector spinae and trapezius muscles were recorded, and perceived stress was assessed.

Targeted protein degradation using chimeric small molecules, such as proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) and specific and nongenetic inhibitors of apoptosis protein (IAP)-dependent protein erasers (SNIPERs), has attracted attention as a method for degrading intracellular target proteins via the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). These chimeric molecules target a variety of proteins using small molecules that can bind to the proteins. However, it is difficult to develop such degraders in the absence of suitable small-molecule ligands for the target proteins, such as for transcription factors (TFs).

Article Synopsis
  • Bortezomib (Btz) is effective for treating multiple myeloma (MM), but some patients experience adverse effects and poor responses to the drug, prompting a study on the link between HLA alleles and treatment outcomes.
  • In a phase II trial, 82 patients with newly diagnosed MM were analyzed for HLA typing to investigate connections between specific alleles and the severity of toxicities like peripheral neuropathy and skin disorders.
  • Although no significant HLA allele was conclusively linked to outcomes, associations were noted: HLA-B*40:06 was more common in severe peripheral neuropathy cases, and certain class II alleles were linked to better treatment responses, indicating HLA genotyping may aid in predicting

Background: Specific species of ceramides (Cer), major constituents of lipids in the stratum corneum (SC), are decreased and are correlated with SC barrier and water-holding functions in the skin of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) or psoriasis (Pso). However, possible correlations between Cer subclass ratios and skin properties in barrier-disrupted skin and in healthy skin remain unclear. The objective of this study was to identify a new marker to evaluate skin properties and epidermal differentiation in SC not only in barrier-disrupted skin but also in healthy skin.

The efficiency of upfront consolidation with high-dose chemotherapy/autologous stem-cell transplantation (HDCT/ASCT) for newly diagnosed high-risk diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) may be influenced by induction chemotherapy. To select better induction chemotherapy regimens for HDCT/ASCT, a randomized phase II study was conducted in high-risk DLBCL patients having an age-adjusted International Prognostic Index (aaIPI) score of 2 or 3. As induction chemotherapy, 6 cycles of R-CHOP-14 (arm A) or 3 cycles of R-CHOP-14 followed by 3 cycles of CHASER (arm B) were planned, and patients who responded proceeded to HDCT with LEED and ASCT.
