Lipid peroxidation as a possible cause of benzoyl peroxide toxicity in rabbit dental pulp--a microsomal lipid peroxidation in vitro.

The toxicity of composite resin on rabbit dental pulp was investigated biochemically. A microsomal fraction of rabbit dental pulp was incubated with each of the components of composite resins, and the formation of peroxide was determined by the thiobarbituric acid reaction. Benzoyl peroxide (BPO), the most widely used catalyst, was the most effective on peroxidation, but monomers were not.

[Anti-tumor activity of peripheral lymphocytes of tumor-bearing rats by in vitro culture].

This basic study was performed to determine whether the anti-tumor effect of lymphocytes obtained from the peripheral blood of a tumor bearing host can be increased when cultured in vitro with Mitomycin C (MMC)-treated AH109A tumor cells, using interleukin-2 (IL-2). Donryu rats were used as tumor bearing hosts. The following results were obtained.

Natural fibroin genes purified without using cloning procedures from fibroin-producing and -nonproducing tissues reveal indistinguishable structure and function.

Natural fibroin genes were purified from total DNA extracted from the fibroin-producer cells (posterior silk gland) and -nonproducer cells (middle silk gland or pupa) by two cycles of CsCl/actinomycin D centrifugation followed by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Purity of the final samples was greater than 14%. DNA sequences of these natural genes between positions -171 and +104 were identical and showed no sign of base modification as assayed by the method of Maxam and Gilbert.

[A case of hypospadias in a woman whose incontinence was repaired surgically].

[Experimental studies of plasma exchange therapy for malignant tumor].

We conducted the experiment to evaluate the effect of plasma exchange in treatment of cancer. Donryu rats of 8-10 week old female were used: 1 X 10(6) AH109A were inoculated subcutaneously in the back of rats. We performed comparative study on four groups: 1) untreated group; 2) plasma exchanged group; 3) MMC treated group; and 4) plasma exchange + MMC treated group.

[Transcutaneous electrical stimulation for the control of frequency and urge incontinence].

To control frequency, urgency and urge incontinence, transcutaneous electrical stimulation was applied to the tibial nerve, the pudendal nerve or the anal sphincter in 79 patients. All patients were refractory to any medications for the control of frequency, nocturia, urgency and urge incontinence from a variety of causes including disk protrusion, Parkinson's disease and idiopathic conditions. [Megaureters in adults].

Megaureters are common in children but are rarely found in adults, probably due to the scarcity of clinical symptoms. Reconstruction surgery in adults has been performed only exceptionally up to a few years ago. We encountered 7 adults with 7 megaureters in the recent 6 years.

Characteristics of directional couplers with lapped multimode fibers.

Measurements of characteristics and a theoretical ray-optics analysis were made on directional couplers prepared by connecting a pair of lapped multimode fibers. Various measured characteristics such as branching ratio, excess insertion loss, and mode conversion agreed fairly well with calculated values. From these results a way was found to lessen the excess insertion loss and the branching ratio.

Structural analysis of the fibroin gene at the 5' end and its surrounding regions.

Using the genomic clones of the fibroin gene with its flanking sequences, a detailed restriction map was prepared with particular attention given to the region neighboring the 5' end of the gene. About 60% of the fibroin mRNA has a complete cap (m7GpppAmUmCXG), and the remaining 40% has an unmethylated cap (GpppAPyXXG). The latter can be radioactively labeled by the use of vaccinia capping enzymes.
