Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates how computed tomography (CT) attenuation values (CTav) can predict tumor necrosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who have achieved a complete response (CR) after treatment with lenvatinib.
  • Researchers compared arterial phase CT images with histopathological findings from surgery, determining CTav thresholds indicative of necrosis and confirming the accuracy of these thresholds in a larger patient group.
  • Results indicated that a CTav cut-off of 30.2 HU and a N30-CTav occupancy rate of over 30.6% can effectively identify necrotic tissue and predict lower local recurrence rates after achieving CR in HCC patients.

Improvements in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence rate and survival have been frequently reported following virus eradication after hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC cure. However, the efficacy of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy in patients who included those with advanced HCC and decreased hepatic functional reserve is unknown. A comparative examination was retrospectively conducted of 141 patients with hepatitis C who started DAA therapy within 1 year after undergoing curative HCC treatment and showed a sustained viral response (SVR) and 327 patients who underwent curative treatment for HCV-related HCC and did not subsequently receive antiviral therapy.

Introduction: With the increase in the number of patients with sustained virologic response (SVR) in whom hepatitis C virus (HCV) was eradicated by the anti-HCV therapy, there are now many individuals in whom serum HCV RNA is absent despite positive serum HCV antibodies. However, in general clinical practice, HCV infection remains usually screened by measurement of serum HCV antibodies and patients with SVR can be misunderstood regarding HCV infection status.

Methods: In the multicenter study, we conducted interviews with administered questionnaires to SVR individuals who had regular hospital visits after SVR.

In recent years, there have been several reports on robotic-assisted percutaneous coronary intervention (R-PCI), but few studies have been conducted on R-PCI performed under intravascular imaging guidance. To elucidate the periprocedural and postoperative 30-day outcomes of intravascular imaging-guided R-PCI, we performed a retrospective observational study on all patients in 102 consecutive cases who underwent R-PCI under intravascular imaging guidance at a single center in Japan from June 12, 2019 to February 18, 2021. The primary end point was 30-day survival, and the secondary end point was the incidence of complications.

Backgrounds And Aims: Cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are potentially fatal complications of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. We investigated how compensated cirrhosis and a history of curatively treated HCC influenced patient mortality after HCV eradication, that is, sustained virologic response (SVR).

Methods: We studied 5458 patients with confirmed SVR who were prospectively followed up for more than 1 year after SVR achieved with direct-acting antivirals.

This study aimed to evaluate tumor changes due to chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ) in terms of quantitative values measured by APT imaging and NODDI. We performed TMZ treatment (administered orally by gavage to the TMZ-40 mg and TMZ-60 mg groups) on 7-week-old male Wistar rats with rat glioma C6 implanted in the right brain. TWI, APT imaging, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and NODDI were performed on days 7 and 14 after implantation using 7T-MRI, and the calculated quantitative values were statistically compared.

Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) is a potential target for anticancer drugs. However, as an intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) whose tertiary structure cannot be solved, innovative strategies are needed. We focused on its hydrophobic α-helix structure, defined as an induced helical motif (IHM), which is a possible interface for protein-protein interaction.

Cerebral artery structure has not been extensively studied in primates. The aim of this study was to examine the cerebrovascular anatomy of cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), which are one of the most commonly used primates in medical research on human diseases, such as cerebral infarction and subarachnoid hemorrhage. In this study, we investigated the anatomy and diameter of cerebral arteries from 48 cynomolgus monkey brain specimens.

Asthma currently affects more than 339 million people worldwide. In the present preliminary study, we examined the efficacy of a new, inhalable soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibitor (sEHI), 1-trifluoromethoxyphenyl-3-(1-propionylpiperidin-4-yl) urea (TPPU), to attenuate airway inflammation, mucin secretion, and hyper-responsiveness (AHR) in an ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized murine model. Male BALB/c mice were divided into phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), OVA, and OVA+TPPU (2- or 6-h) exposure groups.

After integration to the human genome as a provirus, human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) utilizes host T cell gene expression machinery for viral replication. The viral RNA-binding protein, Rex, is known to transport unspliced/incompletely spliced viral mRNAs encoding viral structural proteins out of the nucleus to enhance virus particle formation. However, the detailed mechanism of how Rex avoids extra splicing of unspliced/incompletely spliced viral mRNAs and stabilizes them for effective translation is still unclear.

Certain somatic mutations in mtDNA were associated with tumor progression and frequently found in a homoplasmic state. We recently reported that pyrrole-imidazole polyamide conjugated with the mitochondria-delivering moiety triphenylphosphonium (PIP-TPP) targeting an mtDNA mutation efficiently induced apoptosis in cancer cells with the mutation but not normal cells. Here, we synthesized the novel PIP-TPP, CCC-021-TPP, targeting ND6 14582A > G homoplasmic missense mutation that is suggested to enhance metastasis of non-small-cell lung cancer A549 cells.
