Extra-articular resection for bone sarcomas involving the hip joint.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the oncologic, functional, and clinical outcomes after the extra-articular resection and limb-salvage reconstruction of the hip joint.

Methods: A retrospective study of 34 patients who underwent extra-articular resection of the hip joint for bone sarcomas between 1996 and 2016 was conducted. The primary tumor site was pelvis in 26 patients (76%) and femur in eight (24%).

The amphidromous sleeper Eleotris oxycephala (Perciformes: Eleotridae) is mainly distributed along the Kuroshio Current in East Asia, and this current is thought to be the main driver of the species' dispersal. Due to anthropogenic environmental changes in rivers, E. oxycephala is ranked as a threatened or near-threatened species in the red lists of 12 prefectures in Japan.

Extendable Endoprostheses in Skeletally Immature Patients: A Study of 124 Children Surviving More Than 10 Years After Resection of Bone Sarcomas.

Background: Extendable endoprostheses are used to reconstruct segmental defects following resection of bone sarcomas in skeletally immature patients. However, there remains a paucity of studies with regard to long-term outcomes.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 124 skeletally immature children who underwent an extendable endoprosthetic replacement and survived more than 10 years after the surgical procedures.

Surgical outcomes and prognostic factors of non-metastatic radiation-induced sarcoma of bone.

Background: The survival and prognostic factors in non-metastatic, radiation-induced bone sarcomas of bone have not been described. Moreover, the quantitative data about surgical outcomes and complications after limb-salvage surgery versus amputation are quite limited.

Methods: Twenty-five patients with non-metastatic, radiation-induced sarcoma of bone who underwent definitive surgery were analysed.

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) is a rare sarcoma subtype characterized by monomorphic epithelioid cells embedded in a densely sclerotic collagenous matrix. The overwhelming majority of tumors arise in soft tissues; however, rare cases have been documented to occur primarily in bone. The hallmarks of soft tissue SEF include MUC4 immunoreactivity and the presence of an EWSR1-CREB3L1 fusion.

What is an adequate margin for infiltrative soft-tissue sarcomas?

Objectives: What constitutes an adequate margin of resection for infiltrative subtypes of soft-tissue sarcomas remains unclear. We aimed to determine the prognostic significance of the margin in millimetres for myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS).

Methods: 305 patients diagnosed with either a high-grade, localised MFS (n = 98) or UPS (n = 207) were included.

Background/aim: We analyzed the process of healing at osteotomy sites and timing of achievement of full weight-bearing in sarcoma patients who underwent hemicortical or intercalary reconstruction using the extracorporeal irradiated autologous bone graft technique.

Patients And Methods: We studied 10 patients who had undergone tumor resection and reconstruction with hemicortical extracorporeal irradiated autologous bone graft at mid-shaft femur or tibia. The control group consisted of 30 patients who received the reconstruction using intercalary bone graft.

Secondary chondrosarcoma arising from osteochondroma: outcomes and prognostic factors.

Aims: The aim of this study was to report the outcomes of patients who underwent definitive surgery for secondary chondrosarcomas arising from osteochondromas.

Patients And Methods: A total of 51 patients with secondary chondrosarcomas occurring from osteochondromas were reviewed. Median age was 36 years (interquartile range (IQR) 15 to 82).

Characteristics of acquired transthyretin amyloidosis: A case series and review of the literature.

Objective: To elucidate the clinical characteristics of acquired ATTR amyloidosis after domino liver transplantation (DLT) with liver grafts explanted from patients with hereditary variant ATTR (ATTRv) amyloidosis.

Methods: We evaluated the presence of amyloid deposits and clinical symptoms in 30 recipients of domino liver transplants (24 men and 6 women) who underwent DLT with liver grafts explanted from patients with ATTRv amyloidosis. We analyzed symptoms and measures of 7 cases of symptomatic acquired ATTR amyloidosis and compared those with 30 patients with ATTRv amyloidosis who were the domino liver donors.

Physeal-preserving endoprosthetic replacement with short segment fixation in children with bone sarcomas.

Aims: The aim of this study was to report the results of custom-made endoprostheses with extracortical plates plus or minus a short, intramedullary stem aimed at preserving the physis after resection of bone sarcomas in children.

Patients And Methods: Between 2007 and 2017, 18 children aged less than 16 years old who underwent resection of bone sarcomas, leaving ≤ 5 cm of bone from the physis, and reconstruction with a custom-made endoprosthesis were reviewed. Median follow-up was 67 months (interquartile range 45 to 91).

Concerted Photoluminescence of Electrochemically Self-Assembled CuSCN/Stilbazolium Dye Hybrid Thin Films.

Hybrid thin films of crystalline CuSCN and 4-(,-dimethylamino)-4'-('-methyl)stilbazolium (DAS) in three distinctively different nanostructures were obtained by electrochemical self-assembly from a single pot containing all the chemical ingredients. Their optical properties for UV-vis-NIR absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and PL excitation spectra were examined between 77 and 298 K, in comparison with solution and solid powder of DAS tosylate (DAST). Unlike all other dyes we tested before, PL of DAS was not quenched but rather enhanced when hybridized with CuSCN.

Is the Width of a Surgical Margin Associated with the Outcome of Disease in Patients with Peripheral Chondrosarcoma of the Pelvis? A Multicenter Study.

Background: We attempted to resect peripheral chondrosarcoma of the pelvis with clear margins. Because of the proximity of vessels or organs, there is still concern that narrow surgical margins may have an adverse effect on disease outcomes. Although current guidelines recommend resection of histologic Grade II or Grade III chondrosarcomas with a "wide" margin, there are no specific recommendations for the adequate width of a surgical margin.

The Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (MASCOT) landed on Ryugu's surface on 3 October 2018. We present images from the MASCOT camera (MASCam) taken during the descent and while on the surface.

The presence of a cryptic barrier in the West Pacific Ocean suggests the effect of glacial climate changes on a widespread sea-dispersed plant, (Fabaceae).

Ocean currents are an important driver of evolution for sea-dispersed plants, enabling them to maintain reciprocal gene flow via sea-dispersed diaspores and obtain wide distribution ranges. Although geographic barriers are known to be the primary factors shaping present genetic structure of sea-dispersed plants, cryptic barriers which form clear genetic structure within oceanic regions are poorly understood. To test the presence of a cryptic barrier, we conducted a phylogeographic study together with past demographic inference for a widespread sea-dispersed plant, , using 308 individuals collected from the entire Indo-West Pacific (IWP) region.

Surgical treatment for pelvic Ewing sarcoma: What is a safe and functional acetabular reconstruction when combined with modern multidisciplinary treatments?

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to clarify which local treatment is oncologically and functionally effective in pelvic Ewing sarcoma (ES).

Methods: A consecutive series of patients who underwent pelvic resections and acetabular reconstructions after chemotherapy between 1986 and 2016 at a supra-regional center were evaluated.

Results: The cohort consisted of 35 patients.

Exposure to Hantavirus is a Risk Factor Associated with Kidney Diseases in Sri Lanka: A Cross Sectional Study.

Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) imposes a substantial burden on public health in Sri Lankan agricultural communities. High seroprevalences of hantavirus have been reported in CKDu patients in several locations of Sri Lanka. We carried out a cross-sectional study followed by an unmatched case-control comparison in two geographically distinct areas of Sri Lanka, Girandurukotte (CKDu endemic) and Kandy (CKDu non-endemic) to determine whether exposure to hantaviruses is a potential risk factor in patients with kidney disease.

We have reported high seroprevalence to Thailand orthohantavirus (THAIV) or THAIV-related orthohantavirus (TRHV) among patients with chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology in Girandurukotte, Sri Lanka. THAIV or TRHV infection is considered to be transmitted by rodent hosts in this area, but its reservoir rodents have not yet been identified. Hence, 116 rodents were captured, and seroprevalences were examined by indirect immunofluorescent antibody assay (immunofluorescence assay [IFA]) using antigens of THAIV strain Thai749-infected Vero E6 cells and recombinant nucleocapsid protein of THAIV expressed in Vero E6 cell.

A Photo-Activatable Peptide Mimicking Functions of Apolipoprotein A-I.

Apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) plays a critical role in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) biogenesis, function and structural dynamics.
