This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of umbilical cord cysts (UCCs) detected from the second trimester onwards in a single tertiary center over a 22-year period. The subjects consisted of a total of 12 cases of UCCs among 11 pregnant women (10 singleton pregnancies and 1 twin pregnancy), diagnosed at ≥ 14 weeks of gestation, and managed at Kurume University Hospital from 2000 to 2021. The maternal backgrounds, characteristics of the cysts, including their location, numbers, sizes, associated fetal/neonatal findings, and outcomes, were analyzed retrospectively.

Methods: Twenty postpartum women (singleton births) were studied: 10 with cesarean and 10 with transvaginal deliveries. All cesarean cases were first operational delivery with lower uterine incision, repaired with double-layer suture.
Background And Aims: The impact of urbanization on plant evolution, particularly the evolution of reproductive traits, remains largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the consequences of urbanization on the reproductive traits of Portulaca oleracea in the Kantō region of Japan. Portulaca oleracea has a unique cleistogamous reproductive system, which consists of genetically determined chasmogamous (open, CH) and cleistogamous (closed, CL) plants.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate artifacts in the skull base region of head computed tomography (CT) images with various tilt angles relative to the orbitomeatal line.
Methods: CT images of a head phantom acquired by helical and non-helical scanning with the tilt angles set from 0 to 20 degrees in 5-degree increments were evaluated in this study. Regions of interest (ROIs) were set at the cerebellum, temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and basal ganglia in the phantom images.
The immunoproteasome subunit LMP7 (β5i)/LMP2 (β1i) dual blockade has been reported to suppress B cell differentiation and activation, suggesting that the dual inhibition of LMP7/LMP2 is a promising approach for treating autoimmune diseases. In contrast, the inhibition of the constitutive proteasome subunit β5c correlates with cytotoxicity against non-immune cells. Therefore, LMP7/LMP2 dual inhibitors with high selectivity over β5c may be desirable for treating autoimmune diseases.

Methods: Patients responding to platinum-based therapy and starting olaparib maintenance therapy for recurrent epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer at Kurume University Hospital between January 2018 and November 2021 were enrolled in the study. Their data were extracted retrospectively from medical records.
Hyaluronate gel injection (HGI) in the rectovaginal septum and vesicovaginal septum is effective in the setting of high-dose-rate image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) for cervical cancer. We aimed to retrospectively investigate optimal conditions for HGI to achieve optimal dose distribution with a minimum number of HGI. We classified 50 IGABT plans of 13 patients with cervical cancer who received IGABT both with and without HGI in the rectovaginal septum and vesicovaginal septum into the following two groups: plan with (number of plans = 32) and plan without (number of plans = 18) HGI.

We evaluated CRS in advanced ovarian cancer patients undergoing NAC and looked for associations between CRS and MDR1 and CA125 KELIM. Our aim was to predict the therapeutic effect of NAC before interval debulking surgery (IDS) by examining its association with CRS.

However, even with well-differentiated histology, it sometimes tends to invade extensively and shows metastatic potential, suggesting that this is a group of cancers with heterogeneous behavior. In contrast, due to its tendency for younger onset, the treatment strategy for EC frequently considers fertility preservation, highlighting the need for a more accurate evaluation of myometrial invasion through biopsy and imaging diagnostics.

We report a unique case of recurrent ependymoma in the dura mater, showing histopathological signs of lymphatic proliferation at the tumor attachment site. The patient initially presented with a headache, and was diagnosed with fusion-positive supratentorial ependymoma, central nervous system WHO Grade 3.

Methods: Using the Infinium assay, we performed genome-wide DNA methylation analysis of 250 liver tissue samples, including noncancerous liver tissue (U-N) and corresponding cancerous tissue (U-T) from patients with cryptogenic HCC without a history of excessive alcohol use and hepatitis virus infection, and whose U-N samples showed no remarkable histological features (no microscopic evidence of simple steatosis, any form of hepatitis including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or liver cirrhosis).
Results: We identified 3272 probes that showed significant differences of DNA methylation levels between U-N and normal liver tissue samples from patients without HCC, indicating that a distinct DNA methylation profile had already been established at the precancerous U-N stage.
NDRG1 is a nickel- and calcium-inducible gene that plays important roles in the primary growth of malignant tumors, as well as in invasion and metastasis. This study investigated the associations of NDRG1 expression with cell adhesion and other clinicopathological factors in ovarian cancer. The clinical records of 123 women who underwent surgery for ovarian cancer in our institute were reviewed retrospectively.

Herein, we investigated the mother-to-embryo nutrient transfer machinery in the viviparous teleost Xenotoca eiseni, which belongs to the family Goodeidae. The intraovarian embryo absorbs maternal supplements via the hindgut-derived placental structure termed the trophotaenia.

HPV vaccine effectiveness against high-grade cervical lesions has been demonstrated among young Japanese women, but evidence of its effects on invasive cervical cancer (ICC) is lacking. Using data from two different cancer registries, we compared recent trends of new ICC cases by age group using Poisson regression analysis.

Low mass degradation products that formed in each test were structurally characterized and indirectly quantified by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS) using a reference compound and an internal standard of similar structure. The degradation of the polymer was assumed to directly correlate with the appearance of lower mass species.

However, to date, no anti-tumor therapeutic strategy that uses these immune mechanisms has been established. This study investigated changes in the immunity of the TME during standard radical RT for cervical cancer combined with external beam RT and brachytherapy and determined whether these changes affect prognosis.
