Burden of Current Insulin Therapy and Expectations for Future Insulin Therapy: Results from INBEING, a Web-Based Survey in Japan.

Introduction: This survey assessed the perspectives of physicians, people with diabetes (PWD), and caregivers in Japan regarding initiation barriers and treatment burden associated with insulin therapy, and expectations for new insulin therapies.

Methods: An online survey, conducted May-June 2023, was completed by physicians (n = 411), PWD (type 1 diabetes, n = 108; type 2 diabetes [T2D]: insulin-naive, n = 114; insulin-treated, n = 108), and caregivers (family members, n = 107; nurses, n = 117; care workers, n = 104). Agreement with statements regarding initiation barriers, current feelings, and burden of insulin therapy was assessed.

Successful surgical resection of a multilobular osteochondrosarcoma arising from the costal cartilage in a cat.

A 10-year-old neutered male cross-bred cat was referred to our clinic for a solid mass tightly fixed to the right side of the thoracic wall from the 2nd to 4th ribs. Computed tomography revealed the mass had remarkable calcifications and arose from the 3rd costal cartilage. After removal, it was diagnosed histopathologically as a multilobular osteochondrosarcoma (MLO).

Biocompatible and Water-Soluble Shortwave-Infrared (SWIR)-Emitting Cyanine-Based Fluorescent Probes for In Vivo Multiplexed Molecular Imaging.

Extending molecular imaging into the shortwave-infrared (SWIR, 900-1400 nm) region provides deep tissue visualization of biomolecules in the living system resulting from the low tissue autofluorescence and scattering. Looking at the Food and Drug Administration-approved and clinical trial near-infrared (NIR) probes, only indocyanine green (ICG) and its analogues have been approved for biomedical applications. Excitation wavelength less than 800 nm limits these probes from deep tissue penetration and noninvasive fluorescence imaging.

Microplastic debris in the marine environment is a global problem. Biodegradable polymers are being developed as alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, and quick and easy methods for screening for bacterial strains that can degrade such polymers are needed. As a screening method, the clear zone method has been widely used but has technical difficulties such as plate preparation and interpretation of results.

Outcome after primary percutaneous coronary intervention for ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock.

Background: Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) complicated by cardiogenic shock (CS) may reduce the risk of subsequent cardiovascular events but remains challenging. The study aim was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and long-term outcomes of patients undergoing primary PCI for STEMI with CS.

Methods: We conducted an observational cohort study of patients with STEMI who underwent primary PCI between April 2004 and December 2017 at Juntendo University Shizuoka Hospital.

Regional differences in the prevalence of generalized pustular psoriasis in Japan.

Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP), a rare form of psoriasis, is characterized by neutrophil-rich, sterile pustules. In Japan, GPP has intractable and rare disease designation, which allows patients to access support from national and local governments for medical expenses. Previously, similar numbers of patients in Tokyo and Hokkaido have been shown to have GPP designation, despite different population sizes.

Enhanced biodegradable polyester film degradation in soil by sequential cooperation of yeast-derived esterase and microbial community.

The degradation of biodegradable plastics poses a significant environmental challenge and requires effective solutions. In this study, an esterase derived from a phyllosphere yeast Pseudozyma antarctica (PaE) enhanced the degradation and mineralization of poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) film in soil. PaE was found to substitute for esterases from initial degraders and activate sequential esterase production from soil microbes.

Clinical outcomes of ST elevation myocardial infarction patients without standard modifiable risk factors.

Background: Standard modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (SMuRFs; hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and smoking) are widely recognized as risk factors for coronary artery disease. Higher incidence of pegfilgrastim-induced bone pain in younger patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy: a real-world experience.

Background: Pegfilgrastim is widely used for the prevention of febrile neutropenia (FN) in patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy for various types of cancer. However, pegfilgrastim-induced bone pain (PIBP) is a relevant adverse event occurring during cancer treatment. Thus, we aimed to determine the risk factors for PIBP in real-world clinical practice.

Heterogeneous trends of premature mortalities in Japan: joinpoint regression analysis of years of life lost from 2011 to 2019.

Purpose: To assess long-term premature mortalities in Japan for providing evidence of strategies for sustainable development in population health.

Methods: Descriptive study for observing the trends of premature mortalities due to 10 major causes and all-cause in Japan was conducted using governmental statistics taken between 2011 and 2019. Years of life lost (YLL) was calculated for each cause, and the trends of these were examined by joinpoint regression analysis.

A near-infrared fluorescent long-chain fatty acid toward optical imaging of cardiac metabolism in living mice.

Non-invasive fatty acid (FA) metabolic imaging is crucial for the evaluation of cardiac function in the heart. Currently, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) are widely employed for cardiac metabolic imaging both in pre-clinical and clinical studies. Although SPECT and PET enable highly sensitive cardiac metabolic imaging, there are several disadvantages such as the high cost of instruments and radioactive tracer synthesis.

Impact of Evacuation on the Long-Term Trend of Metabolic Syndrome after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

There has been an increase in lifestyle-related diseases in Fukushima Prefecture since the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, the overall long-term trends of lifestyle-related diseases in the Fukushima Prefecture according to the evacuation and other area are not reported. Therefore, we examined the long-term trends in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome before and after the Great East Japan Earthquake in Fukushima Prefecture according to these areas using a national database.

Isolation of the hemeoxygenase-1 inducer from rice-derived peptide.

Bioactive peptides with various health benefits have been reported from rice protein hydrolysates. We previously showed that rice-derived peptides (RP) increased intracellular glutathione levels and induced the expression of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase, which is regulated by nuclear transcription factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an important Nrf2 downstream antioxidant enzyme that protects against oxidative stress.

Recently, shortwave infrared (SWIR) fluorescence imaging over 1000 nm has attracted much attention for optical imaging because of the higher signal to background ratios in the SWIR region. For the application of SWIR fluorescence imaging to biomedical fields, the development of SWIR fluorescent molecular probes with high biocompatibility is crucial. Although many researchers have designed a variety of SWIR emitting probes based on organic dyes, the synthesis of biocompatible SWIR fluorescent molecular imaging probes is still challenging.

BRET-Based Dual-Color (Visible/Near-Infrared) Molecular Imaging Using a Quantum Dot/EGFP-Luciferase Conjugate.

By virtue of its high sensitivity, bioluminescence imaging (BLI) is an important tool for biosensing and bioimaging in life sciences. Compared to fluorescence imaging (FLI), BLI has a superior advantage that the background signals resulting from autofluorescence are almost zero due to the unnecessity of external excitation. In addition, BLI can permit a long-term observation of living cells because BL results in very low photocytotoxicity toward the host cells.

Ultrasound-Guided Placement of a Hemodialysis Catheter into the Distal Femoral Vein in a Patient with Multiple Catheters: A Case Report.

Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury may require postoperative renal replacement therapy. Although the right internal jugular vein and femoral veins are generally the preferred insertion sites for the hemodialysis catheter for continuous renal replacement therapy, the presence of other indwelling catheters or prior thrombotic events from previous catheters may preclude use of these sites. We present a case in which the hemodialysis catheter was inserted into the distal femoral vein using point-of-care ultrasound in a patient with multiple catheter insertions after coronary artery bypass grafting.

Clinical features and predictors of outcome in patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Background: Although short-term mortality of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has decreased dramatically in the past few decades, sudden cardiac arrest remains a serious complication. The aim of the study was to assess the clinical characteristics and predictors of prognosis in AMI patients who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).

Methods: We retrospectively registered consecutive AMI patients who were treated with emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between 2004 and 2017.

Predictive factors of postoperative fentanyl consumption in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, might present difficulties in achieving postoperative analgesia. Prior studies have suggested that patients with IBD undergoing major abdominal surgery require higher doses of perioperative opioids than do patients without IBD. Considering patients with IBD potentially require high-dose opioids, identifying those requiring higher opioid doses will allow clinicians to optimize the perioperative opioid dose and avoid insufficient pain management or complications of opioid overdose.

Analysis of the linear oscillation dynamics of Fluidyne engines.

A Fluidyne engine is a liquid piston Stirling engine that uses thermally induced self-sustained oscillations of water and air that are filled in a looped tube and tuning column. It presents high potential for use as a low-temperature-difference Stirling engine with a simple structure. This study analyzes the linear oscillation dynamics of the Fluidyne from a thermoacoustic point of view, with particular emphasis on the local specific acoustic impedance of the working gas, which is given by the ratio of the complex amplitudes of the pressure and velocity oscillations in the regenerator of the Fluidyne.

In Vitro and In Vivo Fluorescence Imaging of Antibody-Drug Conjugate-Induced Tumor Apoptosis Using Annexin V-EGFP Conjugated Quantum Dots.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are conjugates of a monoclonal antibody and a cytotoxic drug that induce tumor apoptosis. The evaluation of ADC-induced tumor apoptosis is crucial for the development of ADCs for cancer therapy. To evaluate the efficacy of ADCs, we present in vitro and in vivo fluorescence imaging techniques for ADC-induced tumor apoptosis using annexin V-EGFP (EGFP: enhanced green fluorescent protein) conjugated quantum dots (annexin V-EGFP-QDs).
