A Simplified Approach to Jaw-in-a-Day Using a Preassembled Prosthesis: Lowering the Barrier to Entry.

Fibula flap reconstruction with primary dental implant placement has been established as a successful procedure for composite mandibular defects. When using virtual surgical planning, these techniques typically require additional personnel and materials preoperatively and intraoperatively to fabricate occlusal-based guidance and prosthesis. The authors present a technique utilizing a custom-made implant-supported prosthesis completed before surgery that greatly reduces lead time and needed resources.

Predictive factors of osteoradionecrosis necessitating segmental mandibulectomy: A descriptive study.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess characteristics of patients with mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of severity necessitating segmental mandibulectomy and osteocutaneous free flap reconstruction.

Study Design: This study is a retrospective review of patients who underwent free flap reconstruction of the mandible at the UCLA Medical Center between January 2016 and February 2020 secondary to ORN.

Results: Twenty-nine charts with detailed dental and medical records were identified.

Prosthetic reconstruction of a patient with an irradiated total rhinectomy with navigated surgical placement of a single zygomatic implant: A clinical report.

This clinical report details the rehabilitation of a patient who underwent a total rhinectomy, subsequent adjuvant radiation therapy, and eventual prosthetic rehabilitation but then developed an empirically diagnosed medical adhesive intolerance. With the aid of digital planning and real time navigation, 2 zygomatic implants were placed by using a flapless surgical approach followed by early delivery of an interim prosthesis. In spite of the failure of 1 craniofacial implant, definitive restoration was accomplished by using a titanium bar, double magnetic attachments, and a new silicone prosthesis.

Radiation dose enhancement associated with contemporary dental materials.

Statement Of Problem: Electron backscatter radiation from dental materials can contribute to soft tissue injury in patients undergoing head and neck radiation therapy.

Purpose: The dose enhancement from the materials used for prosthodontic restoration of the dentition has not been well quantified. This study reports the magnitude of backscatter dose from the contemporary dental materials lithium disilicate and zirconia as compared with high-noble alloy and investigates the role of a spacer material in mitigating this effect.

Non-mydriatic ultrawide field scanning laser ophthalmoscopy compared with dilated fundal examination for assessment of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema in Chinese individuals with diabetes mellitus.

Aims: To evaluate the performance of ultrawide field scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (UWF-SLO) for assessing diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular oedema (DME) in a Chinese population, compared with clinical examination.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. A series of 322 eyes from 164 patients with DM were included.

Effect of corneal curvature on optical zone decentration and its impact on astigmatism and higher-order aberrations in SMILE and LASIK.

Purpose: To determine the association between anterior corneal curvature and optical zone centration as well as its impact on aberration profiles in small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).

Methods: Seventy-eight eyes of 78 patients treated with SMILE (45 eyes) and LASIK (33 eyes) were included. The centration of the optical zone was evaluated on the instantaneous curvature difference map between the preoperative and 3-month postoperative scans using a superimposed set of concentric circles.

Using Retinal Imaging to Study Dementia.

The retina offers a unique "window" to study pathophysiological processes of dementia in the brain, as it is an extension of the central nervous system (CNS) and shares prominent similarities with the brain in terms of embryological origin, anatomical features and physiological properties.  The vascular and neuronal structure in the retina can now be visualized easily and non-invasively using retinal imaging techniques, including fundus photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT), and quantified semi-automatically using computer-assisted analysis programs. Studying the associations between vascular and neuronal changes in the retina and dementia could improve our understanding of dementia and, potentially, aid in diagnosis and risk assessment.

Etoricoxib improves osteoarthritis pain relief, joint function, and quality of life in the extreme elderly.

Etoricoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor, with a lower risk of gastrointestinal toxicity compared to traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). We evaluated the effectiveness and tolerability of etoricoxib in extremely elderly patients with chronic pain due to osteoarthritis (OA). Impaired phagocytosis of apoptotic cell material in serologically active clinically quiescent patients with systemic lupus erythematosis.

Aim: Serologically active clinically quiescent (SACQ) patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) account for 8-12% of all patients with SLE, but there is disagreement about whether such patients are indeed clinically stable. Patients with clinically active SLE have decreased macrophage function, although the status of SACQ patients with SLE is unclear.

Method: This study compared 18 patients who met the diagnostic criteria for SACQ SLE with 18 healthy volunteers with regard to the capability of macrophages to clear apoptotic bodies by use of a modified serum-free phagocytosis test.

Prosthetic rehabilitation of an extensive midfacial and palatal postsurgical defect with an implant-supported cross arch framework: a clinical report.

When aggressive cancer is surgically treated, the extent of the lesion dictates the amount of tissue excised. The removal of extensive amounts of tissue, including crucial landmarks, complicates prosthesis design. This clinical report details the rehabilitation of a patient who had a total maxillectomy coupled with extensive surgical removal of the midface.

Insertion losses of balconies on a building façade and the underlying wave interactions.

This study used scale model experiments to investigate the insertion losses of balconies on a building façade in the presence of ground reflections. The experiments measured both A-weighted broad- and narrowband insertion loss spectra. The underlying wave interactions/interferences and their couplings with and without reflections from the balcony ceilings were also examined in detail, and these findings were related to the dimensions and elevations of the balconies.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Canna indica L. (CI) has been widely used as a folklore medicine in tropical and subtropical areas with beneficial effects in numerous diseases, including infection, rheumatism, hepatitis, and it has also been identified as an antioxidant.

Distinct impacts of syndesmophyte formation on male and female patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Aim: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, mainly affects the axial skeleton, leading to sacroiliitis and rigidity of the spine. Both spinal rigidity and syndesmophyte development can affect bone formation and resorption. In addition, inflammatory cytokines and cell adhesion molecules are correlated with bone metabolism.

Orally administered mycelial culture of Phellinus linteus exhibits antitumor effects in hepatoma cell-bearing mice.

Aim Of The Study: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anticancer effect of a mycelial culture from Phellinus linteus PL-7 (MCPL-7) and to elucidate its potential mechanism in vivo.

Materials And Methods: SCID CB-17 mice received a transplant of Hep3B cells followed by daily MCPL-7 administrations for 8 weeks. Following tumor implantation, groups C-E were subcutaneously administered 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, or 250 mg/kg MCPL-7 powder per day, respectively, for 8 weeks.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with premature atherosclerosis, and an increased susceptibility of plasma lipids and lipoproteins to oxidation could at least in part promote atherogenesis. The objective of this study was to identify the effects of anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) and disease activity on oxidative and antioxidative status in patients with SLE. In this study, patients in SLE/aCL+ group and in SLE disease activity index >3 group had significantly higher thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels, titers of autoantibodies against oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), and glutathione peroxidase activity than that of healthy controls.

Maoecrystal Z, a cytotoxic diterpene from Isodon eriocalyx with a unique skeleton.

[structure: see text] A novel diterpene with an unprecedented tetracyclic 6,7:8,15-di-seco-7,20-olide-6,8-cyclo-ent-kaurane skeleton, named maoecrystal Z (1), has been isolated from the leaves of a Chinese medicinal herb, Isodon eriocalyx (Labiatae). Its structure was determined by comprehensive NMR and MS spectroscopic analysis coupled with single-crystal X-ray crystallographic diffraction. Compound 1 exhibited comparable inhibitory effect against human K562 leukemia, MCF7 breast, and A2780 ovarian tumor cells with IC(50) = 2.

We previously reported that systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients have a higher risk of insulin resistance and abnormal insulin secretion. Recent studies demonstrated that interleukin (IL)-18, a novel pro-inflammatory cytokine, may be involved in triggering the inflammatory processes in SLE and the concentrations of circulating IL-18 in SLE patients were significantly higher than those in healthy subjects. IL-12 has a synergistic effect with IL-18, and both cytokines are inducers of interferon (IFN)-gamma.

Interaction of vitamin E and exercise training on oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme activities in rat skeletal muscles.

It has been shown that free radicals are increased during intensive exercise. We hypothesized that vitamin E (vit E) deficiency, which will increase oxidative stress, would augment the training-induced adaptation of antioxidant enzymes. This study investigated the interaction effect of vit E and exercise training on oxidative stress markers and activities of antioxidant enzymes in red quadriceps and white gastrocnemius of rats in a 2x2 design.
