Cognitive models posit that negatively biased attention toward dysphoric information has a causal role in the maintenance of depression-related psychopathology. Attention bias modification (ABM) tests this idea by altering an attentional bias and examining subsequent effects on depression. Prior work finds that ABM alters negatively biased attention for dysphoric information and reduces depression; however, a number of studies have failed to show these effects.

Unexplained sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the young remains a critical issue for clinicians, researchers, patients and their family members. In this review, we explore the current status of SCA and SCD evaluation in the young, including recent monogenic and polygenic disease discoveries, advancements in cardiac imaging and our growing understanding of the role of the Purkinje system in triggering life threatening and even fatal ventricular arrhythmias. Yet, despite these advancements, over a third of SCA and SCD among individuals with seemingly structurally normal hearts remain unexplained.

Influenza viruses pose a threat to public health as evidenced by severe morbidity and mortality in humans on a yearly basis. Given the constant changes in the viral glycoproteins owing to antigenic drift, seasonal influenza vaccines need to be updated periodically and effectiveness often drops due to mismatches between vaccine and circulating strains. In addition, seasonal influenza vaccines are not protective against antigenically shifted influenza viruses with pandemic potential.

West Nile virus (WNV) nonstructural protein 5 (NS5) possesses multiple enzymatic domains essential for viral RNA replication. During infection, NS5 predominantly localizes to unique replication organelles (ROs) at the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), known as vesicle packets (VPs) and convoluted membranes (CMs), with a portion of NS5 accumulating in the nucleus. NS5 is a soluble protein that must be in the VP, where its enzymatic activities are required for viral RNA synthesis.

Five long-acting (LA) antiretrovirals (ARVs) are currently available in a limited number of countries worldwide for HIV-1 prevention or treatment - cabotegravir, rilpivirine, lenacapavir, ibalizumab, and dapivirine. Implementing use of LA ARVs in routine clinical practice requires significant changes to the current framework of HIV-1 prevention, treatment, and service provision. Given the novelty, complexity, and interdisciplinary requirements of safe and optimal use of LA ARVs, consensus recommendations on the use of LA ARVs will assist clinicians in optimizing use of these agents.

  • Trans/transfeminine women face higher rates of HIV infection, and concerns about interactions between HIV treatment (ART) and gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) might discourage them from starting ART compared to cisgender women.
  • The study aims to analyze how feminizing hormone therapy (FHT) interacts with a specific ART regimen (B/F/TAF) by conducting a six-month study with three groups of participants: trans women with HIV on both therapies, cis women with HIV on ART, and trans women without HIV on FHT.
  • Findings from this research could provide essential insights into the safe use of ART and FHT together, which is crucial for improving health outcomes for trans women living with HIV.

  • - The Deliver Health Study assessed the effectiveness of home-delivered antiretroviral therapy (ART) compared to clinic-based care for people living with HIV during the COVID-19 pandemic, revealing that home delivery significantly improved viral suppression rates.
  • - Researchers tracked 155 adults in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, from October 2019 to December 2020 to evaluate the influence of changing COVID-19 restrictions on missed ART doses and late clinic refill visits using statistical analyses.
  • - Although the pandemic did not notably affect self-reported ART use between the groups, there was a significant increase in the risk of late clinic refill visits during COVID-19 alert levels, indicating that as restrictions worsened, more patients delayed their clinic

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is needed across the lifetime to maintain viral suppression for people living with HIV. In South Africa, obstacles to reliable access to ART persist and are magnified in rural areas, where HIV services are also typically costlier to deliver. A recent pilot randomized study (the Deliver Health Study) found that home-delivered ART refills, provided at a low user fee, effectively overcame logistical barriers to access and improved clinical outcomes in rural South Africa.

Introduction: Although prior studies indicate that a QTc > 500 ms on a single baseline 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is associated with significantly increased risk of arrhythmic events in long QT syndrome (LQTS), less is known about the risk of persistent QT prolongation. We sought to determine QTc persistence and its prognostic effect on breakthrough cardiac events (BCEs) among pediatric patients treated for LQTS.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 433 patients with LQTS evaluated, risk-stratified, and undergoing active guideline-based LQTS treatment between 1999 and 2019.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major public health problem and, in associated co-infection with hepatitis delta virus (HDV), causes the most severe viral hepatitis and accelerated liver disease progression. As a defective satellite RNA virus, HDV can only propagate in the presence of HBV infection, which makes HBV DNA and HDV RNA the standard biomarkers for monitoring the virological response upon antiviral therapy, in co-infected patients. Although assays have been described to quantify these viral nucleic acids in circulation independently, a method for monitoring both viruses simultaneously is not available, thus hampering characterization of their complex dynamic interactions.

While human autopsy samples have provided insights into pulmonary immune mechanisms associated with severe viral respiratory diseases, the mechanisms that contribute to a clinically favorable resolution of viral respiratory infections remain unclear due to the lack of proper experimental systems. Using mice co-engrafted with a genetically matched human immune system and fetal lung xenograft (fLX), we mapped the immunological events defining successful resolution of SARS-CoV-2 infection in human lung tissues. Viral infection is rapidly cleared from fLX following a peak of viral replication, histopathological manifestations of lung disease and loss of AT2 program, as reported in human COVID-19 patients.
