Lymph node harvesting in colorectal carcinoma specimens.

Introduction: Adequate lymph node evaluation is an important determinant of prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. Current guidelines recommend evaluation of at least 12 lymph nodes; however, a significant number of patients fail to meet these criteria.

Aim: To investigate the factors that influence adequate recovery and evaluation of lymph nodes in colorectal cancer.

The role of sonography in the diagnosis of cystic lesions of the breast.

Introduction: Breast sonography is appropriate in the initial assessment of a women younger than 30 years with a palpable lump and in the adjunctive evaluation of mammographic masses, and palpable abnormalities not seen mammographically.

Material And Methods: A total of 269 patients underwent breast examination with ultrasound due to the presence of bilateral or unilateral palpable lesions. Women under 40 years old were submitted to US examination only while patients older than 40 years underwent US breast assessment and conventional mammography.

Management of incidental left-sided gallbladder.

A left-sided gallbladder is a gallbladder located on the left side of the round ligament. It constitutes an uncommon anatomic abnormality. We report on a case of left-sided gallbladder discovered incidentally during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and we discuss the different forms of this anatomic anomaly and its surgical relevance.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors of the rectum: report of five cases.

We report on five patients (three males and two females), with a median age of 66.2 years (range, 58-73 years) who were admitted in our department from April 1998 until January 2004 with the diagnosis of rectal gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Their main symptoms were rectal bleeding, constipation and abdominal discomfort.

A prospective comparison of ampullectomy with pancreaticoduodenectomy for the treatment of periampullary cancer.

Local surgical treatment of periampullary neoplasms seems attractive in the context of the reduced morbidity and mortality than the more radical treatment options. The aim of our study was to compare local excision (LE) of the ampulla with standard pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for the treatment of periampullary cancer in terms of overall survival. Background: There is no report of electrothermal bipolar vessel sealer utilization in rectal surgery. The objective here was to evaluate the results of the use of this device in open low anterior resection for rectal cancer regarding reduction of operative time, hemostasis, and postoperative complications compared with the conventional technique. An additional aim was to describe and standardize this operative technique.

Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia: a lethal complication in peritoneal dialysis patients.

Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is a relatively uncommon disorder, seen primarily in elderly patients with cardiac disease, and is characterized by progressive intestinal ischemia leading to infarction, sepsis, and death. It is suspected of being the underlying cause in at least 20% - 30% of acute mesenteric ischemia patients. End-stage renal disease patients are among the highest risk populations for developing this lethal complication; however, NOMI is not unique to hemodialysis and can occur in peritoneal dialysis patients as well.

Pretreatment tumor lysis syndrome associated with bulky retroperitoneal tumors. Recognition is the mainstay of therapy.

Acute pretreatment tumor lysis syndrome is a rare complication of cancer. Early recognition and aggressive management are mandatory for prevention of the adverse sequelae of the syndrome. Here we present 2 cases of pretreatment tumor lysis syndrome, concluding that this clinical entity should be in the differential diagnosis of acute renal failure associated with malignancy, as early recognition is in fact the mainstay of treatment.

Inguinal dermoid cyst of the round ligament. A case report and review of the literature.

Introduction: Dermoid cysts are rarely located in extraovarian sites, representing an extremely uncommon lesion of the round ligament. The differential diagnosis of an inguinal lesion that proved to be a dermoid cyst deriving from the round ligament is presented with a review of the literature.

Case Report: A case of a 27-year-old female with a dermoid cyst arising from the round ligament and lying inside the inguinal canal, which was tender and palpable, is reported.

Unusual site of recurrent musculoskeletal hydatid cyst: case report and brief review of the literature.

A case of a large multiplex recurrent hydatid cyst involving the left gluteal muscle and the left iliopsoas, accompanied with degeneration of the musculature of the left upper leg is presented along with a review of the relevant literature. Very few such cases have been reported worldwide. The presented case is also distinguished by the involvement of muscles of distant anatomic areas.

Endovascular obliteration of a ruptured right gastric artery aneurysm.

Aneurysms of the right gastric artery are extremely rare lesions. They constitute less than 0.001% of reported visceral artery aneurysms.

Primary gastric melanoma: a case report.

Melanoma accounts for 1-3 per cent of all malignant tumors. Except cutaneous, other less common melanomas include, among others, those in the GI tract. However, their primary or secondary nature is often difficult to establish.

Rectal carcinosarcoma: a case report and review of literature.

A 60-years old male was admitted to our department for investigation of constipation and hypogastric discomfort intensified during defecation of a few weeks duration. The cause proved to be a rectal carcinosarcoma that was treated by abdominoperineal resection and postoperative chemo-radiotherapy. The patient died 6 months later due to hepatic failure, showing evidence of disseminated disease.

Gardner's syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.

Gardner's syndrome is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by the presence of colonic polyposis, osteomas and a multitude of soft tissue tumors. The syndrome may present at any age from 2 mo to 70 years with a variety of symptoms, either colonic or extracolonic. We present a case of a 11-year-old female patient with Gardner's syndrome who presented with a lumbar area desmoid tumor and treated with resection of the desmoid, restorative proctocolectomy and ileal pouch anal anastomosis, A review of the current literature has been performed.
