Cost/benefit decisions regarding the relative effort or delay costs associated with a particular response are mediated by distributed dopaminergic and glutamatergic neural circuits. The present study assessed the contribution of dopamine and NMDA glutamate receptors in these different forms of decision making using novel effort- and delay-discounting procedures. In the effort-discounting task, rats could either emit a single response on a low-reward lever to receive two pellets, or make 2, 5, 10, or 20 responses on a high-reward (HR) lever to obtain four pellets.

Left ventricular hypertrophy is considered an independent risk factor for cardiac morbidity and mortality, and many studies have shown that women have a lower incidence of left ventricular hypertrophy even after correcting for numerous risk factors. This cardio-protective effect seen in women has been attributed to estrogen, which likely modulates specific growth-promoting systems such as the renin-angiotensin system, and in turn may lead to the prevention of left ventricular hypertrophy. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms responsible are poorly understood.

Specific sequences of muscle coordination exist in movements of every sport. Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is capable of inducing apoptosis in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). However, many of the human NSCLC cell lines are resistant to TRAIL, and TRAIL treatment of the resistant cells leads to the activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2). TRAIL can induce apoptosis in TRAIL-sensitive NSCLC cells through the induction of death-inducing signaling complex (DISC) assembly in lipid rafts of plasma membrane.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in both men and women, but the incidence for women rises sharply after menopause. This has been mainly attributed in the reduction of the female sex hormone estrogen during menopause, suggesting that estrogen may have cardioprotective effects, although how estrogen exerts its cardioprotective effects is not fully understood. Moreover, the beneficial effect of estrogen on end-organ damage such as cardiac hypertrophy (CH) remains unclear.

Objectives: ABCB1 encodes the efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which regulates the intracellular concentration of many xenobiotics, including several HIV protease inhibitors (PIs). Exposure to some xenobiotics, such as the antibiotic rifampicin, increases P-gp expression. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the HIV PIs saquinavir and atazanavir on the expression and function of ABCB1 and P-gp in primary and cultured lymphocytes, as well as the molecular interactions between these drugs and P-gp.

The sympatholytic properties of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) contribute to its vasodilatory and natriuretic effects. High circulating catecholamine levels, along with renal dysfunction, present in proANP gene-disrupted (-/-) mice are thought to contribute to the hypertension characteristic of this model. The development of inexpensive and practical iron catalysts for the environmentally benign epoxidation of olefins with hydrogen peroxide as terminal oxidant is described. By systematic variation of ligands, metal sources, and reaction conditions, it was discovered that FeCl3 x 6 H2O in combination with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid and different amines shows high reactivity and excellent selectivity towards the epoxidation of aromatic olefins and moderate reactivity towards that of aliphatic olefins.

In the presence of [Ru(terpyridine)(2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate)], aliphatic and benzylic alcohols are oxidized to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones with high selectivity by using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. There is no need for the addition of co-catalysts or organic solvents. By applying an optimized reaction protocol, high catalyst productivity (turnover number>10,000) and activity (turnover frequency up to 14,800 h(-1)) has been achieved.

Objective: To compare the use of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA and cervical cytology cotesting in screening and follow-up of patients with previous cervical abnormalities and to assess the significance of a positive HPV DNA test result in re-screening of cytologically normal cases.
