Id-1 (inhibitor of differentiation or DNA binding) is a helix-loop-helix protein that is overexpressed in many types of cancer including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We previously reported that ectopic Id-1 expression activates the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathway in human esophageal cancer cells. In this study, we confirmed a positive correlation between Id-1 and phospho-AKT (Ser473) expressions in ESCC cell lines, as well as in ESCC on a tissue microarray.

Background: Acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (ABNOM), also known as Hori nevus, is one of the most commonly acquired dermal facial melanocytoses among people with dark skin, especially Asian women.

Objective: The goals of this article were to review published work on ABNOM; address controversies about pathogenesis and therapeutic approach; and inspire further study.

Aim Of The Study: Coptidis rhizoma (CR, Chinese name is Huanglian) has been used in treating infectious and inflammatory diseases for two thousand years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its related pharmacological basis for the therapeutics has been studied intensively, but CR can also be used for vomiting of "dampness-heat type or acid regurgitation" due to "liver-fire attacking stomach" in TCM, whose symptoms seem to link the hepatic and biliary disorders, yet details in the therapies of liver diseases and underlying mechanism(s) remain unclear. To clarify this ethnopharmacological relevance, hepatoprotective effect of Coptidis rhizoma aqueous extract (CRAE) and its possible mechanism were studied in rats intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in the present study.

Phosphorylated (pi-) protein kinase B (AKT) is commonly expressed in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cell lines and tissues, suggesting the involvement of AKT-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling in NPC carcinogenesis. This study evaluated the activity of an mTOR inhibitor, RAD001 (Everolimus, Novartis Pharma AG, Switzerland), in 5 NPC cell lines (HK1, HONE-1, CNE-1, CNE-2, C666-1), 2 cisplatin-resistant NPC cell lines and their respective parental cell lines (HK1-LMP1, HONE-1-EBV). RAD001 inhibited cell growth in a dose-dependent manner at nanomolar concentrations in all cell lines.

Candida albicans frequently develops resistance to treatment with azole drugs due to the acquisition of gain-of-function mutations in the transcription factor Tac1p. The cyclometalated platinum(II) complex [Pt(L)Cl], where HL is a new cyclometalating ligand 2-phenyl-6-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine containing C(phenyl), N(pyridyl), and N(pyrazolyl) donor moieties, was found to possess two-photon-induced luminescent properties. We performed susceptibility testing using the microdilution method to determine the in-vitro activity of tigecycline against 393 Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates collected in 2006 from 19 hospitals in Taiwan. Significant proportions of the isolates were resistant to imipenem (44%), ciprofloxacin (75%), amikacin (69%), sulbactam (34%) and all four antibiotics (22%), and susceptibility to tigecycline among these different resistant phenotypes of A. baumannii varied from 71% to 82%.

The oncogenic process leading to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) requires the combination of genetic and epigenetic alterations, latent infection by the Epstein-Barr virus and local inflammation. A transcriptome analysis of NPC xenografts identified the gene encoding the cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein 2 (c-IAP2) among the top five most intensely expressed. Consistently, the very high levels of the c-IAP2 protein were detected in 11 of 13 NPC biopsies.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a herpesvirus associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), gastric carcinoma (GC), and other malignancies. EBV is the first human virus found to express microRNAs (miRNAs), the functions of which remain largely unknown. Functional studies to identify the potential role of a chromosome 3p14-21 gene, protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type G (PTPRG), were performed. PTPRG was identified as a candidate tumor suppressor gene (TSG) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by differential gene profiling of tumorigenic and nontumorigenic NPC chromosome 3 microcell hybrids (MCH). Down-regulation of this gene was found in tumor segregants when compared with their corresponding tumor-suppressive MCHs, as well as in NPC cell lines and tumor biopsies.

Computational acceleration on graphics processing units (GPUs) can make advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstruction algorithms attractive in clinical settings, thereby improving the quality of MR images across a broad spectrum of applications. This paper describes the acceleration of such an algorithm on NVIDIA's Quadro FX 5600. The reconstruction of a 3D image with 128(3) voxels achieves up to 180 GFLOPS and requires just over one minute on the Quadro, while reconstruction on a quad-core CPU is twenty-one times slower.

Arabidopsis thaliana acyl-CoA-binding protein 2 (ACBP2) was observed to interact with farnesylated protein 6 (AtFP6), which has a metal-binding motif (M/LXCXXC). Their interaction and expression in response to heavy metals were investigated. Yeast two-hybrid analysis and in vitro assays showed that an ACBP2 derivative lacking ankyrin repeats did not interact with AtFP6, indicating that the ankyrin repeats mediate protein-protein interaction.

Uterine cervical cancer, the second most frequently occurring cancer in women worldwide, is tightly associated with the expression of high-risk human papillomavirus [mainly human papillomavirus (HPV)-16 and HPV18] oncogenes E6 and E7 and characteristically exhibits chromosomal instability. However, the mechanisms underlying chromosomal instability in cervical cancer are still not fully understood.
