Abdominal lipectomy: a prospective outcomes study.

Context/objective: Abdominal lipectomy is performed by plastic surgeons to provide symptomatic, functional, and cosmetic relief for patients with excess abdominal tissue. However, there are few clinical outcome studies looking at the utility of this procedure: this is the first prospective oucomes study.

Design: Patients who underwent abdominal lipectomy at the Bellflower Medical Center during a 12-month period (September 2004 through September 2005) were prospectively studied.

A qualitative study of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) are a pressing problem in Vietnam, in particular because of propaganda associating HIV with the "social evils" of sex work and drug use. There is little understanding of the causes and sequelae of stigma and discrimination against PLHIV in Vietnam. Fifty-three PLHIV participated in focus group discussions in Ho Chi Minh City.

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and phage types of Salmonella typhi from Vietnam.

A retrospective study of the patterns of antimicrobial susceptibility and phage types of 111 Salmonella typhi strains isolated in 1996 from Vietnam was carried out. Sixteen isolates of Pasteurella multocida were cultured from cases diagnosed as acute septicaemic pasteurellosis in Vietnamese pigs. The HSB-PCR assay provided rapid presumptive determination of 10 isolates of P. multocida identified as haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) causing type B cultures (B:2, B:5, B:2,5).

The Krukenberg operation: a modified technique avoiding skin grafts.

The Krukenberg operation involves surgical separation of the radius and ulna in a hand or forearm amputee. Thus the forearm is converted into two rays with good grasp and tactile sensation.
