Acute neuroinflammation, which is notably characterized by a significant elevation in pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, often rapidly develops following a traumatic spinal cord injury and exacerbates damage in the lesion area. This study addresses the limitations inherent in strategies that regulate only a single or a few cytokines, which are often insufficient to counteract the progression of secondary injuries. We explore the use of polydopamine nanoparticles as a broad-spectrum immunomodulator, capable of capturing by adsorption a wide range of cytokines and thereby effectively suppressing neuroinflammation.

This study investigates whether nanoplastics are significant contributor of rare earth elements (Gd) transportation under environmental conditions. Important effects of nanoplastic concentration, Gd concentration, complexation with organic ligands, pH, ionic strength and occurrence of natural colloids competitor were studied thanks to an experimental design combining incubation follow by ultrafiltration and ICPMS analyses. In particular, we observed that even in sea water, about half of the gadolinium can be adsorbed on nanoplastics.

This study compares the efficacy of various DFT and wavefunction methods in predicting radical stabilisation energies, bond dissociation energies, and redox potentials for organic radicals. Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) enables the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of quantitative phase distributions from a defocused hologram. Traditional computational algorithms follow a sequential approach in which one first reconstructs the complex amplitude distribution and later applies focusing algorithms to provide an in-focus phase map. In this work, we have developed a synergistic computational framework to compensate for the linear tilt introduced in off-axis DHM systems and autofocus the defocused holograms by minimizing a cost function, providing in-focus reconstructed phase images without phase distortions.

Anilines are potentially high-value arylating agents, but are limited by the low reactivity of the strong C-N bond. We show that the reactive intermediate benzyne can be used to both activate anilines, and set-up an aryl transfer reaction in a single step. The reaction does not require any transition metal catalysts or stoichiometric organometallics, and establishes a metal-free route to valuable biaryl products by functionalizing the aniline C-N bond.

Over the past twenty years, the Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) exam has transformed the care of patients presenting with a combination of trauma (blunt or penetrating) and hypotension. In these hemodynamically unstable trauma patients, the FAST exam permits rapid and noninvasive screening for free pericardial or peritoneal fluid, the latter of which implicates intra-abdominal injury as a likely contributor to the hypotension and justifies emergent abdominal surgical exploration. Further, the abdominal portion of the FAST exam can also be used outside of the trauma setting to screen for free peritoneal fluid in patients who become hemodynamically unstable in any context, including after procedures that may inadvertently injure abdominal organs.

Five-membered ring systems are ubiquitous throughout natural products and synthetic therapeutics, and thus, efficient methods to access this essential scaffold are required. Herein, we report the thioacid-mediated, 5--trig cyclization of various 1,6-dienes, with high yields of up to 98%. The labile thioester functionality can be exploited to generate a free thiol residue which can be used as a functional handle or removed entirely to provide the traceless cyclized product.
