Rationale & Objective: The identification of pathogenic variants in genes associated with chronic kidney disease can provide patients and nephrologists with actionable information to guide diagnoses and therapeutic plans. Introduction: Recent literature highlights the clinical utility of genetic testing for patients with kidney disease. Genetic testing provides significant benefits for reproductive risk counseling, including the option of in vitro fertilization with preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disease (PGT-M). PGT-M allows for a significant reduction in risk for a pregnancy affected with the familial disease.

Some women undergoing noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) do not receive an informative result due to low fetal fraction (FF). A proportion of these are at increased risk for fetal trisomy 13, 18, or triploidy, while others have no change from their prior risk. Women with an initial uninformative NIPT need to be counseled about any such change in their risk for fetal abnormality and also the probability that a redraw will be informative.

Background: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening may reduce death due to prostate cancer but leads to the overdiagnosis of many cases of indolent cancer. Targeted use of PSA screening may reduce overdiagnosis. Multimarker genomic testing shows promise for risk assessment and could be used to target PSA screening.

"Gene doping" is the term used to describe the potential abuse of gene therapy as a performance-enhancing agent. Gene doping would apply the techniques used in gene therapy to provide altered expression of genes that would promote physical superiority. For example, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a primary target for growth hormone; overexpression of IGF-1 can lead to increased muscle mass and power.
