Recent studies have proposed the use of D-dimer as a screening tool to "rule out" acute aortic dissection, claiming a sensitivity approaching 100%. We reviewed the literature to determine whether D-dimer can be used as the sole screening tool for acute aortic dissection. An Ovid MEDLINE search, 1966 to present, was performed with the key words "aortic dissection," "fibrin degradation products," and "D-dimer," limited to "human" and "English language.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: The emphasis on publications for promotion in academic medicine would lead one to the theory that authorship numbers would increase proportionally with this emphasis. To investigate authorship trends across a number of periodicals, we performed a descriptive study comparing two full years of published articles spaced ten years apart from five medical journals.
Methods: Physician reviewers each reviewed all articles of one medical journal for the 1995 and 2005 publication years.
Objectives: This study was designed to determine whether digital intubation is a valid option for definitive airway control by emergency physicians.
Methods: Digital intubation was performed by 18 emergency medicine residents and 4 staff emergency medicine physicians on 6 different cadavers. Placement was confirmed by direct laryngoscopy.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of the commercially available product Mitigator Sting and Bite Treatment in reducing the pain after imported fire ant stings.
Methods: Twenty-four volunteer subjects were exposed to imported fire ant stings on both fore-arms. The subjects received Mitigator paste on 1 arm and calamine lotion on the opposite arm, in a blinded manner, from 90 seconds to 10 minutes after exposure.
