We report here a rare case of an acute peripheral nerve compression by pseudotumoral calcinosis (PCT) at the right elbow in a patient with severe tertiary hyperaparathyroidism. This complication required urgent multidisciplinary management. Surgical decompression by PCT resection enabled rapid motor and sensory recovery.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLysosomes are single membrane bounded group of acidic organelles that can be involved in a process called lysosomal exocytosis which leads to the extracellular release of their content. Lysosomal exocytosis is required for plasma membrane repair or remodeling events such as bone resorption, antigen presentation or mitosis, and for protection against toxic agents such as heavy metals. Recently, it has been showed that to fulfill this protective role, lysosomal exocytosis needs some autophagic proteins, in an autophagy-independent manner.

An autophagy involvement is suspected in OP pathogenesis but a definitive proof in humans remains to be obtained.
Methods: Postmenopausal women hospitalized for femoral neck fracture (OP group) or total hip replacement (Control group) were enrolled using very strict exclusion criteria.
Introduction: Increased RANKL expression is observed in the bone tissue of fibrous dysplasia of bone/McCune-Albright syndrome (FD/MAS). In one animal model of FD/MAS, the inhibition of RANKL reduced tumor volume. A beneficial effect of denosumab on pain in patients refractory to bisphosphonates has been reported, but without systematic quantification of pain improvement.

Physical activity is one of the central recommendations for the management of knee osteoarthritis. Although concentric muscle activities are often preferred to eccentric ones, the corresponding rationale remains controversial.

At the basal level, this process plays a role in quality control, thus participating in cellular homeostasis. Autophagy can also be induced by various stresses, such as nutrient deprivation or hypoxia, to allow the cell to survive until conditions improve.

Oxytocin promotes osteoblasts differentiation and function, leading to an increased bone formation with no effect on bone resorption and an improvement of bone microarchitecture.

Our purpose was to report prosthesis survival, complications, and outcomes of RSA in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) at minimum 5-year follow-up.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study including 65 consecutive primary RSAs performed in 59 patients with RA between 1991 and 2010.
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) represent a minor population of cancer cells with stem cell-like properties which are able to fuel tumor growth and resist conventional treatments. Autophagy has been described to be upregulated in some CSCs and to play a crucial role by maintaining stem features and promoting resistance to both hostile microenvironments and treatments. Osteosarcoma (OS) is an aggressive bone cancer which mainly affects children and adolescents and autophagy in OS CSCs has been poorly studied.

It is usually considered a contaminant, but some rare reports have described deep-seated infections. Virulence factors remain poorly known, although, genomic analysis highlights pathogenic potential.

The aim of this study was to compare occupational and leisure-time physical activity, to assess the relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular risk factors and the variation in cardiovascular risk profile measured 20 years apart in the Italian population.
Methods: In two populations aged 35-69 years (MATISS 1984-1987: 2041 men, 2424 women; OEC 1998-2002: 4214 men, 4206 women) gender-specific levels of occupational (occupational physical activity [OPA]-light, OPA-moderate, OPA-heavy) and leisure-time (leisure-time physical activity [LTPA]-low, LTPA-moderate, LTPA-high) physical activity were compared.
Background: Cardiovascular risk factor research has recently broadened its focus based on new data indicating the benefits of low risk, i.e. favorable levels of all major risk factors.

Methods: 3745 men and 3664 women aged 40-69 years were classified into five risk categories (< 5 %; 5-10%; 10-15%; 15-20%; > or = 20%) taking into account age, smoking habit, history of diabetes, systolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol and excluding those already under treatment for hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia or experienced a previous major cardiovascular event (1937 persons: 955 men, 982 women).
Results: Proportion of people estimated at risk in 10 years > or = 20% is minimal in the youngest age range, increases in adulthood, duplicates in smokers and is higher in diabetics.
Six hundred seventy-six patients with ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast (DCIS) from 1971 to 1995 were included in the study. Computerized patient files were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical findings were less frequently reported to reveal DCIS after 1989.

We applied the VNPI under the conditions defined by Silverstein et al., in 367 retrospective DCIS entirely sectioned into serial macroscopic 2 mm slices (155 patients had radiotherapy, median follow-up 71 months).

The median follow-up time was 149 months.

Objective: To assess the risk of local recurrence of intraductal carcinoma of the breast with a large series and a review of literature.
Methods: We present a retrospective study of 331 cases treated for intraductal carcinoma of the breast. Only patients with at least 5 years follow-up were selected.
This study was conducted to determine the prognostic influence of obvious peritumoral vascular emboli as prospectively determined by a simple routine slide examination in patients with operable node-negative breast cancer. Obvious peritumoral emboli (OPE) were defined by the presence of neoplastic emboli within unequivocal vascular lumina (including both lymphatic spaces and blood capillaries) in areas adjacent to but outside the margins of the carcinoma. OPE were assessed routinely on 5 microns thick haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections for each of 1320 primary operable node-negative breast cancers from 1975 to 1992 at our institution.
