Introduction: Sepsis in people is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction (OD) caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. In veterinary medicine, sepsis is still defined by the presence of systemic inflammation plus the evidence of infection. Based on recent veterinary studies, multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS) has been associated with a worse outcome in sepsis.

Background:  Pedicle occlusion with total free flap loss after microvascular lower extremity reconstruction is a considerably rare yet devastating complication. Fortunately, in the majority of cases, emergency salvage takebacks of compromised free flaps are initiated in a timely manner. In this report, we present our analysis of long-term outcomes following transient vascular compromise mitigated through successful free flap salvage in the lower extremity.

The electrochemical oxidation of small organic molecules (SOMs) such as methanol and glucose is a critical process and has relevant applications in fuel cells and sensors. A key challenge in SOM oxidation is the poisoning of the surface by carbon monoxide (CO) and other partially oxidized intermediates, which is attributed to the presence of Pt-Pt pair sites. A promising pathway for overcoming this challenge is to develop catalysts that selectively oxidize SOMs via "direct" pathways that do not form CO as a primary intermediate.

Reduced genioglossus muscle tone is considered one of the major causes for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) keeps the upper airway patent by increasing the muscle tone of the genioglossus muscle being the major airway opener. According to the German S3-Guideline on Sleep Disordered Breathing this treatment is indicated in patients with OSA failing or rejecting positive airway pressure, showing an AHI between 15 and 65, in particular when anatomy is normal and the BMI below 35.

Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is one of the most relevant pathogens associated with enteritis in dogs and is frequently reported in association with the detection of other pathogens in faeces. In this study the concomitant presence of Canine circovirus (CanineCV) and Canine adenovirus (CAdV) DNA in faecal or intestine samples of 95 dogs with parvovirus enteritis sampled in Italy (1995-2017) was investigated and the viruses identified were genetically characterised. Potential correlations with the antigenic variant of CPV-2 and with signalment data and outcome were evaluated.

Three different phenotypes of septic shock based on changes in blood pressure and lactate are recognized in people. Dysoxic shock, representing the combination of fluid-refractory hypotension and hyperlactatemia, is characterized by greater disease severity and mortality compared to cryptic shock (hyperlactatemia alone) and vasoplegic shock (hypotension with normal blood lactate). Little is known about septic shock and specifically its phenotypes in cats.

Article Synopsis
  • Minimal residual disease (MRD) assessment using multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC) is a key method for determining treatment effectiveness in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) patients.
  • In a study of 321 patients, 76% were found to be MRD-negative at enrollment, with MRD-negative patients showing significantly better 5-year progression-free survival (66% vs. 31%) and overall survival (86% vs. 69%) compared to MRD-positive patients.
  • The study also found that lenalidomide maintenance treatment increased the rate of patients transitioning from MRD-positive to MRD-negative after one year.

Reliable diagnostic and prognostic markers of sepsis are lacking, but essential in veterinary medicine. We aimed to assess the accuracy of C-Reactive Protein (CRP), protein carbonyls (PCO) and paraoxonase-1 (PON1) in differentiating dogs with sepsis from those with sterile inflammation and healthy ones, and predict the outcome in septic dogs. These analytes were retrospectively evaluated at admission in 92 dogs classified into healthy, septic and polytraumatized.

Background: Pyothorax in cats is routinely managed, at least initially, with thoracic tube placement associated with systemic antimicrobial administration. Traditionally, large-bore trocar-type thoracostomy tubes have preferentially been used for the drainage of thick material from the pleural space. In recent years, the use of small-bore wire-guided thoracic drains has increased in both small animals and in humans.
