Autoimmune liver diseases are chronic inflammatory hepatobiliary disorders that when classically defined encompass three distinctive clinical presentations; primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Meaningful changes in disease epidemiology are reported, with increasing incidence and prevalence of AIH and PSC in Europe, and rising prevalence of PBC across Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region. However, there appears to be very significant global variation with contemporary incidence rates of disease per 100 000 ranging from 0.

The structure and function of the soil microbiome of urban greenspaces remain largely undetermined. We conducted a global field survey in urban greenspaces and neighboring natural ecosystems across 56 cities from six continents, and found that urban soils are important hotspots for soil bacterial, protist and functional gene diversity, but support highly homogenized microbial communities worldwide. Urban greenspaces had a greater proportion of fast-growing bacteria, algae, amoebae, and fungal pathogens, but a lower proportion of ectomycorrhizal fungi than natural ecosystems.

The current statistics on cancer show that 90% of all human cancers originate from epithelial cells. Breast and prostate cancer are examples of common tumors of epithelial origin that would benefit from improved drug treatment strategies. About 90% of preclinically approved drugs fail in clinical trials, partially due to the use of too simplified in vitro models and a lack of mimicking the tumor microenvironment in drug efficacy testing.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined racial and ethnic differences in hospital mortality rates after patients underwent TIPS creation for acute variceal bleeding, using data from over 10,000 patients between 2007-2016.
  • - Findings revealed that Black patients had a significantly higher inpatient mortality rate (32%) compared to non-Black patients (15%), despite adjustments for various factors like disease severity and hospital type.
  • - Although Black patients were more likely to be treated in urban teaching hospitals and liver transplant centers, these factors did not significantly affect the mortality rates, suggesting that greater disease severity may be a contributing factor to the observed racial disparity.

The increasing demand for adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors, a result from the surging interest for their potential to cure human genetic diseases by gene transfer, tumbled on low-performing production systems. Innovative improvements to increase both yield and quality of the vector produced have become a priority undertaking in the field. In a previous study, we showed that adding a specific concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl) to the production medium resulted in a dramatic increase of AAV vector particle and infectious titers when using the herpes simplex virus (HSV) production system, both in adherent or suspension platforms.

Harnessing plant-associated microbiomes offers an invaluable strategy to help agricultural production become more sustainable while also meeting growing demands for food, feed and fiber. A plethora of interconnected interactions among the host, environment and microbes, occurring both above and below ground, drive recognition, recruitment and colonization of plant-associated microbes, resulting in activation of downstream host responses and functionality. Dissecting these complex interactions by integrating multiomic approaches, high-throughput culturing, and computational and synthetic biology advances is providing deeper understanding of the structure and function of native microbial communities.

The interdependence between thyroid hormones (THs), namely, thyroxine and triiodothyronine, and immune system is nowadays well-recognized, although not yet fully explored. Synthesis, conversion to a bioactive form, and release of THs in the circulation are events tightly supervised by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. Newly synthesized THs induce leukocyte proliferation, migration, release of cytokines, and antibody production, triggering an immune response against either sterile or microbial insults.
