Introduction-aim: The emergence of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a threat to global public health. The aim of our study was to determine risk factors for treatment failure in MDR-TB.

Methods: Retrospective study conducted between January 2000 and March 2019 including patients with MDR-TB.

Oral provocation test (OPT) to beta-lactam antibiotics (BL) is a gold standard in allergology investigation. We aimed to demonstrate the contribution of OPT in BL hypersensitivity (HS) indicated as a first step in diagnosis. We conducted a retrospective study from 2007 to 2019, in a single Tunisian tertiary care academic center.

Article Synopsis
  • Anaphylaxis is a serious medical emergency often associated with drug or latex allergies, but diverse causes should be examined quickly, including rare conditions like hypersensitivity from Echinococcus granulosus.
  • An 18-year-old female patient presented with right thoracic pain and developed anaphylaxis after receiving paracetamol; her condition improved with treatment while a ruptured liver hydatid cyst was discovered.
  • This case underscores that in situations like pleural punctures yielding abnormal fluid, clinicians should consider complicated hydatid cysts as a potential cause of anaphylaxis.

B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA) is an immune-inhibitory receptor that negatively regulates the lymphocyte activation. A few studies have been devoted to the relationship between BTLA gene variations and cancer's risk. It has been essentially demonstrated to be involved in increasing cancer risk in chronic lymphocyte leukaemia, renal cell carcinoma, breast and colorectal cancer predispositions in Asian population.

Article Synopsis
  • Tuberculous cold abscesses represent a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, accounting for only 1% of cases.
  • A study of 24 patients revealed that these abscesses often present with chronic pain and swelling, primarily affecting the thoracic wall, and are often linked to previous pulmonary TB.
  • Early detection and appropriate anti-tuberculosis treatment led to a positive outcome for most patients, highlighting the importance of considering this condition in individuals with risk factors for TB.

Bacteriological diagnosis of tuberculosis has benefited in recent years from many technological advances to improve rapidity and sensitivity of the techniques. Thus, new LED fluorescence microscopes are in the process of replacing the optical microscopes and the Ziehl-Neelsen technique, making the examination more precise, faster and easier. The manual and automatic liquid culture has improved Lowenstein-Jensen culture and helped shorten antibiotic sensitivity test, allowing appropriate management of patients.
