Fluocinolone Acetonide Enhances Anterograde Mitochondria Trafficking and Promotes Neuroprotection against Paclitaxel-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy.

Paclitaxel (PTX)-induced peripheral neuropathy (PIPN) is a debilitating health condition which is a result of degeneration of peripheral nerves found in extremities. Currently, there are no established treatment methods that can prevent or protect from PIPN. Fluocinolone acetonide (FA) has been recently identified as a potential candidate for protection from PIPN.

Long-term survival of the Lefèvre retentive cup: 12-year follow-up analysis of 466 consecutive cases.

Introduction: The Lefèvre retentive cup is a salvage solution for total hip replacement at high risk of dislocation. Only a few studies have reported the medium or long-term survival; most often, only a small number of patients were included in these studies. This led us to conduct a retrospective analysis of a large population to determine: 1) the 10-year survival rate after primary or revision arthroplasty, 2) the complication rate.

Hypoxia Occurrence in a Military Aviator Below 3048 m.

Introduction: Despite technological advances, hypoxia remains a concern in aviation. Hypoxia can present with a vast array of symptoms that are unique to each aviator. Military aviators undergo hypoxia awareness trainings to learn their unique constellation of hypoxia symptoms.

Midterm Survivorship of the Lefèvre Constrained Liner: A Consecutive Multisurgeon Series of 166 Cases.

Background: Constrained liners are used as part of a salvage procedure to provide stability for patients at high risk for dislocation after a total hip arthroplasty. However, no recent studies exist highlighting their effectiveness and/or limitations.

Method: This prospective review included 166 consecutive hip arthroplasties, either primary (27%) or revision (73%), with a unique design of a constrained liner: Lefèvre retentive cup.

Influence of experience on intra- and inter-observer reproducibility of the Crowe, Hartofilakidis and modified Cochin classifications.

Introduction: A previous study demonstrated that the reproducibility of the Crowe (Cr), the Hartofilakidis (Ha) and the modified Cochin (Co) classifications were comparable. However, there were differences with a trend that suggested the influence of experience. Therefore, we performed a prospective study to investigate whether experience influenced the reproducibility of the commonly used developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) classifications.

Acute alterations of glutamate, glutamine, GABA, and other amino acids after spinal cord contusion in rats.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to an alteration of energetic metabolism. As a consequence, glutamate, glutamine, aspartate and other important amino acids are altered after damage, leading to important disregulation of the neurochemical pathways. In the present study, we characterized the acute-phase changes in tissue concentration of amino acids involved in neurotransmitter and non-neurotransmitter actions after SCI by contusion in rats.

Two-, three-, and four-factor PCL-R models in applied sex offender risk assessments.

The authors compared 2-, 3-, 4-factor, and 2-factor/4-facet Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) models in a previously unpublished sample of 1,566 adult male sex offenders assessed under applied clinical conditions as part of a comprehensive state-mandated community notification risk assessment procedure. "Testlets" significantly improved the performance of all models. The 3-factor model provided the best fit to the current data, followed by the 2-factor/4-facet model.

Opioid availability in Latin America: the declaration of Florianopolis.

Between March 27 and 29, 1994, a group of representatives of 32 palliative care programs from eight Latin American countries met under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) Palliative Care Program for Latin America in Florianopolis, Brazil. The participants included physicians, nurses, psychologists, volunteers, drug regulators, hospital administrators, and representatives from the pharmaceutical industry. A comprehensive report by David Joranson (University of Wisconsin-Madison) was followed by a general discussion moderated by Jan Stjernsward, Chief of the Cancer Unit, World Health Organization, and by Eduardo Bruera, Coordinator of the WHO Cancer Pain and Palliative Care Program for Latin America.
