Reactions of Cp2MCl2 (M=Ti or Zr) with imine-oxime ligands. Formation of metallacycles.

The reactions of bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV)/zirconium(IV) dichloride with a series of imine-oxime ligands (LH2), derived by condensing benzil-alpha-monoxime and 2-phenylenediamine, 4-phenylenediamine, 4-methyl-2-phenylenediamine, 2,6-diamino-pyridine, have been studied in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran in the presence of base and metallocycles of the [Cp2M(L)] (M=Ti or Zr) type have been isolated. Tentative structures have been proposed for the products based on elemental analysis, electrical conductance and spectral (electronic, IR and (1)H-NMR) data. Proton NMR spectra indicate that on the NMR time scale there is rapid rotation of the cyclopentadienyl ring around the metal-ring axis at 25 degrees C.

Microbial diversity--biotechnological and industrial perspectives.

Response surface optimization of effective medium constituents for the production of alkaline protease from a newly isolated strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Optimization of the fermentation medium for maximum alkaline protease production was carried out with a new strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (B-2). Replacing the protein source/inducer (albumin in place of casein) brought about significant increase in yield after 48 hr of inoculation. Three most effective medium constituents identified by initial screening method of Plackett-Burman were albumin, (NH4)2SO4 and glucose.

Adverse interactions of rofecoxib with lisinopril in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Background: Hypertension and arthritis are frequent comorbidities. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are well known to produce hypertension or attenuate the effects of antihypertensive agents in a few patients. The influence of selective NSAIDs on blood pressure and the cardiovascular and renal effects of coxibs have still to be investigated.

Current status of TNF blocking therapy in heart failure.

Recent experimental studies have shown that tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) has deleterious cardiovascular effects. Tumor necrosis factor alpha antagonists bind to TNF-a and functionally inactivate this cytokine and thereby reverse some of these effects. Various clinical studies of TNF-alpha antagonists have reported conflicting results.

Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of erythromycin-A oxime analogs.

A series of erythromycin-A oxime ether as well as esters have been synthesized. Ether derivatives were synthesized through the epoxy ether intermediate of erythromycin-9-oxime, followed by opening of the epoxy linkage through various amines, whereas esters have been prepared through DCC mediated protocol. These derivatives have been evaluated for antibacterial activity and found to be as active as erythromycin-A.

Production of L-phenylacetyl carbinol by immobilized cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Conversion of benzaldehyde to L-phenylacetyl carbinol (L-PAC) was achieved with immobilized, growing cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in different reactors. Product formation increased (31%) with the subsequent initial reuses of the entrapped cells. Biomass production and PAC formation depleted (40 and 57%, respectively) after 4-5 continuous growth and biotransformation cycles.

Adverse drug reaction monitoring: knowledge, attitude and practices of medical students and prescribers.

Background: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) contribute to excessive health care costs through increased patient morbidity and mortality. Thus, there is an urgent need to create awareness among physicians towards ADR monitoring. The present study was designed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of fifth semester undergraduate students and prescribers (interns, junior residents and senior residents) towards the recording and reporting of ADRs.

Study of drug utilization pattern in dental OPD at tertiary care teaching hospital.

Irrational prescribing is a global phenomenon. The objective of the study was to find out the prescribing practices of dental prescribers in a tertiary care teaching hospital with special emphasis on the utilization of antimicrobial agents. A prospective study was conducted in the month of March 2000.

Comparative bioavailability of two formulations of azithromycin.

Aim: To compare the bioequivalence of two brands of azithromycin capsules in healthy male volunteers for regulatory purpose.

Production of calcium gluconate by fermentation.

Calcium gluconate production by Aspergillus niger was investigated in shake flask, rolling shaker, air-lift reactor and stirred reactor. Growth pattern of the organism and fermentation conditions determined the yield of the product. High calcium gluconate production was achieved in air-lift reactor with pellet form of cell growth at moderate specific growth rate and biomass concentration.

Comparative study of beta-adrenoceptor blocking efficacy of two formulations of esmolol in vivo and in vitro.

The objective of the present study was to compare the cardiovascular beta-blocking activity of two different formulations of esmolol. Spontaneously beating guinea-pig isolated atria and the heart rate and blood pressure of anaesthetized cat were employed in the study to compare the beta-blocking efficacy of the two formulations of esmolol using isoprenaline as an agonist. In guinea-pig isolated atria the standard esmolol formulation (Brevibloc) reduced basal atrial rate more significantly than the indigenously formulated esmolol (test formulation).

Production of L-phenylacetylcarbinol by free and immobilized yeast cells.

Production of L-phenylacetylcarbinol (L-PAC) through biotransformation of benzaldehyde by free and immobilized cells of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been attempted. L-PAC production was found to be maximum (0.4 microliter/ml) when anaerobically grown free cells were used as biocatalyst during aerobic biotransformation for two hours with magnetically stirred bioreactor.

Drug utilisation patterns in the Third World.

Drugs are not available to the majority of the population in developing countries. Aggravating factors include weak healthcare structure, inadequate financial resources, nonavailability of pharmaceuticals, lack of drug legislation and policy, ineffective drug utilisation and the prevalence of self-medication. Although most of the population lives in rural areas, available funds are mostly utilised for urban areas.

Characterization of drowning by diatom test.

Examination by the diatom test, of different organs of corpses of individuals who died of drowning revealed the presence of frustules in all the visceral organs. Diatom load of different organs was found to be positively related with breadth/diameter of the frustule. Relatively larger diatoms were encountered in the lungs, heart and kidneys as compared to the other organs.

A study on the vasopressin induced delay in the gastrointestinal transit in mice: possible mechanism of action.

The effect of arginine vasopressin (AVP) on the gastrointestinal (GI) transit and its possible mechanism were studied using charcoal meal test in mice. A dose related inhibitory effect was recorded. The effect appears to be independent of the time allowed between AVP administration and testing.

Effect of alcohols and their potentiating responses on acetylcholine induced contractures on frog rectus abdominis.

Ethanol, propanol and butanol cause contraction and potentiate the responses of acetylcholine (Ach) on frog's rectus muscle. These actions are minimum with ethanol and maximum with butanol. Various drugs acting at different levels of neuromuscular transmission inhibited the responses of alcohol itself and also its potentiating responses of Ach.

Anatomical basis for the clinical application of the arterial supply of musculus pectoralis major.

The pattern of arterial supply to the various parts (clavicular, sternocostal and aponeurotic) of the pectoralis major muscle was studied in 7 cadaver dissections and 10 angiograms by injecting a radio-opaque substance. Three main arteries supplied the muscle, i.e.

Impact of freeze drying on drug resistance pattern of few Escherichia coli strains.

Drug resistant strains of E. coli were freeze dried for long term preservation. Certain drug resistance markers were maintained after freeze drying while others were not.

Mechanism of haloperidol-induced miosis.

Haloperidol administration (iv) has been shown to produce miosis in dogs. In the present study on rabbits, haloperidol administration (iv) produced dose-related miosis but when administered intracerebroventricularly, it failed to produce any change in pupillary size. Higher degree of miosis was observed when haloperidol was administered directly into the anterior chamber of eye.

A study of fatal strangulation cases in Varanasi (India).

Strangulation is one of the oldest and widely used methods of committing murder in the Indian subcontinent. It is usually carried out by constricting the neck either with the hands, elbow, or other parts of body or by ligature, stick, and the like. In this paper we report a study of 26 cases of fatal strangulation occurring in the district of Varanasi (India) during 1982-1983 and analyze their epidemiological, medicolegal, and forensic pathological aspects.
