Article Synopsis
  • The research introduces zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) as a protective layer to improve the performance of silver nanowires (Ag NWs) used as transparent conductive electrodes and heaters.
  • Multi-physics simulations demonstrate that enclosing Ag NWs in ZnO significantly enhances heat dissipation, thermal stability, and cooling efficiency, allowing sustained performance over longer periods.
  • The composite of Ag NWs and ZnO NPs showcases superior electrical, thermal, and optical properties, including lower sheet resistance and higher transmittance compared to Ag NWs alone, making it a strong candidate for use in commercial devices.

Understanding the characteristics of intrinsic defects in crystals is of great interest in many fields, from fundamental physics to applied materials science. Combined investigations of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) and density functional theory (DFT) are conducted to understand the nature of Se vacancy defects in monolayer (ML) ReSe grown on a graphene substrate. Among four possible Se vacancy sites, we identify the Se4 vacancy close to the Re layer by registry between STM topography and DFT simulated images.

NiTe, a type-II Dirac semimetal with a strongly tilted Dirac band, has been explored extensively to understand its intriguing topological properties. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we report that the strength of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in NiTe can be tuned by Se substitution. This results in negative shifts of the bulk Dirac point (BDP) while preserving the type-II Dirac band.

Background: and purpose: Speech entrainment therapy (SET) is a computerized therapeutic approach that involves mimicking an audiovisual speech model to improve speech production. In a pilot study using SET for treatment of post-stroke non-fluent aphasia, significant gains were achieved in verbs per minute (VPM) during discourse using untrained items 1 and 6 weeks after treatment, suggesting that SET may yield meaningful improvements in fluent spontaneous speech for individuals with non-fluent aphasia

Methods: The Speech Entrainment for Aphasia Recovery (SpARc) trial is a prospective, randomized, assessor-blinded, multicenter phase II clinical trial studying persons with chronic post-stroke non-fluent aphasia. Participants will be randomized to 3 weeks, 4.

Dwindling petroleum resources and increasing environmental concerns have stimulated the production of platform chemicals via biochemical processes through the use of renewable carbon sources. Various types of biomass wastes, which are biodegradable and vastly underutilized, are generated worldwide in huge quantities. They contain diverse chemical constituents, which may serve as starting points for the manufacture of a wide range of valuable bio-derived platform chemicals, intermediates, or end products via different conversion pathways.

Polymorphisms allowing multiple structural phases are among the most fascinating properties of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Herein, the polymorphic 1T' phase and its lattice dynamics for bilayer VSe grown on epitaxial bilayer graphene are investigated via low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The 1T' structure, mostly observed in group-6 TMDs, is unexpected in VSe, which is a group-5 TMD.

A novel, integrated process for economical high-yield production of d-mannose and ethanol from coffee residue waste (CRW), which is abundant and widely available, was reported. The process involves pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, color removal, and pervaporation, which can be performed using environmentally friendly technologies. The CRW was pretreated with ethanol at high temperature and then hydrolyzed with enzymes produced in-house to yield sugars.

Little information is available on the link between host development (growth rate and ontogeny) and the composition of the microbiota in fish larvae. This study was carried out to examine potential correlations of microbiota composition with age and growth rate of Atlantic cod larvae. Small and large cod larvae of the same age, representing slow and fast growing individuals, were sampled 10 times during a period of 42 days post hatching (dph), and the composition of the larval microbiota was investigated using a PCR/DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis) strategy.

Recently, layered chalcogenide alloys (LCAs) have been extensively investigated for use in various practical applications by selectively controlling the amount of foreign components. However, the alloying behavior of layered chalcogenides has been rarely explored at the atomistic level. Here, we study the microstructural evolution of SnSeS alloys on the atomic scale by combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

An integrated detoxification process with electrodialysis (ED) followed by adsorption was performed to remove fermentation inhibitors from hemicellulose hydrolysates. The hydrolysates were prepared by oxalic acid pretreatment of yellow poplars at different temperatures. Of fermentation inhibitors, acetic acid showed high removal efficiency of about 90% and high transport rate during the ED process without membrane fouling.

A two-step detoxification process consisting of electrodialysis and adsorption was performed to improve the fermentability of oxalic acid hydrolysates. The constituents of the hydrolysate differed significantly between mixed hardwood and softwood. Acetic acid and furfural concentrations were high in the mixed hardwood, whereas 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) concentration was relatively low compared with that of the mixed softwood.
