Ca signaling in cells begins with the opening of Ca channels in either the plasma membrane (PM) or the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and results in a dramatic increase in the physiologically low (<100 nM) cytosolic Ca level. The temporal and spatial Ca levels are well regulated to enable precise and specific activation of critical biological processes. Ca signaling regulates pathogenic features of apicomplexan parasites like which infects approximately one-third of the world's population.

Employee strain is estimated to cost American companies as much as $500 billion in lost productivity annually, and a leading cause of workforce stress is disagreements with other people (Cook, 2017; Mental Health America, 2017). In this study, we investigate supervisor-subordinate value incongruence as a cause of employee strain. Specifically, this study examines the effect of supervisor-subordinate power distance orientation incongruence on the subordinate's job strain which, in turn, influences the subordinate's job performance.

The predatory mirid Macrolophus praeclarus is widely distributed throughout the Americas, and is reported to prey upon several horticultural pest species. However, little is known about its biology, thermal requirements, crop odour preferences, phytophagy, and capability to induce defensive responses in plants. When five temperatures studied (20, 25, 30, 33 and 35°C) were tested and Ephestia kuehniella was used as prey, the developmental time from egg to adult on tomato, was longest at 20°C (56.

Purpose: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the Quick-Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Score (DASH) score as the main early (90 days) outcome in a prospective multicenter observational Latin American study on isolated humeral shaft fractures.

Methods: From December 2015 to April 2017, in six Latin American countries, patients 18 years or older with a closed, isolated nonpathological 12A, 12B, or 12C AO/OTA (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen/Orthopaedic Trauma Association) fractures were included. The 90 (±10)-day Quick-DASH score was used to compare the results of the different treatments.

Geosmin is one of the most recognizable and common microbial smells on the planet. Some insects, like mosquitoes, require microbial-rich environments for their progeny, whereas for other insects such microbes may prove dangerous. In the vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster, geosmin is decoded in a remarkably precise fashion and induces aversion, presumably signaling the presence of harmful microbes [1].

We use holography to analyze relativistic collisions in a one-parameter family of strongly coupled gauge theories with thermal phase transitions. For a critical value of the parameter, the transition is second order, for subcritical values it is first order, and for supercritical values it a smooth crossover. We extract the gauge theory stress tensor from collisions of gravitational shock waves on the dual geometries.

Treatment of oblique and spiral fractures remains challenging. The aim of this study was to introduce and investigate the new LagLoc technique for locked plating with generation of interfragmentary compression, combining the advantages of lag screw and locking-head-screw techniques. Oblique fracture was simulated in artificial diaphyseal bones, assigned to three groups for plating with a seven-hole locking compression plate.

The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae), is a worldwide pest of livestock. Recent outbreaks of stable flies in sugarcane fields in Brazil have become a serious problem for livestock producers. Larvae and pupae found inside sugarcane stems after harvesting may indicate that stable flies use these stems as potential oviposition or larval development sites.

Background: Split fractures of the lateral tibia plateau in young patients with good bone quality are commonly treated using two minimally invasive percutaneous lag screws, followed by unloading of the knee joint. Improved stability could be achieved with the use of a third screw inserted either in the jail-technique fashion or with a triangular support screw configuration. The aim of this study was to investigate under cyclic loading the compliance and endurance of the triangular support fixation in comparison with the standard two lag-screw fixation and the jail technique.

Rice hoja blanca (white leaf) disease can cause severe yield losses in rice in the Americas. The disease is caused by the rice hoja blanca virus (RHBV), which is transmitted by the planthopper vector Tagosodes orizicolus. Because classical breeding schemes for this disease rely on expensive, time-consuming screenings, there is a need for alternatives such as marker-aided selection.

Purpose: One approach to identify genes that contribute to common complex ocular disorders such as primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is to study the genetic determinates of endophenotypes that are defined by underlying pre-disposing heritable quantitative traits such as central corneal thickness (CCT). Collagen VIII is a major component of Descemet's membrane and studies in mice have indicated that targeted inactivation of the genes encoding the collagen type 8 alpha1 (Col8a1) and collagen type 8 alpha2 (Col8a2) subunits (COL8A1 and COL8A2) results in thinning of the corneal stroma and of Descemet's membrane. The purpose of this study is to evaluate COL8A1 and COL8A2 as candidate genes for thin CCT in human POAG patients.
