Narrow band-ultraviolet B versus clobetasol propionate foam in the treatment of vitiligo: a retrospective study.

Introduction: Several therapeutic options are available for the treatment of vitiligo; among these phototherapy and topical steroids are the most widely documented. A topical formulation of 0.05% clobetasol propionate foam (CPF) has been introduced in the market, but no data are available about the efficacy and tolerability of this new formulation in the treatment of vitiligo.

A novel, potent, oral active and safe antinociceptive pyrazole targeting kappa opioid receptors.

Pyrazole compounds are an intriguing class of compounds with potential analgesic activity; however, their mechanism of action remains unknown. Thus, the goal of this study was to explore the antinociceptive potential, safety and mechanism of action of novel 1-pyrazole methyl ester derivatives, which were designed by molecular simplification, using in vivo and in vitro methods in mice. First, tree 1-pyrazole methyl ester derivatives (DMPE, MPFE, and MPCIE) were tested in the capsaicin test and all presented antinociceptive effect; however the MPClE (methyl 5-trichloromethyl-3-methyl-1H-pyrazole-1-carboxylate) was the most effective.

Spider peptide Phα1β induces analgesic effect in a model of cancer pain.

The marine snail peptide ziconotide (ω-conotoxin MVIIA) is used as an analgesic in cancer patients refractory to opioids, but may induce severe adverse effects. Animal venoms represent a rich source of novel drugs, so we investigated the analgesic effects and the side-effects of spider peptide Phα1β in a model of cancer pain in mice with or without tolerance to morphine analgesia. Cancer pain was induced by the inoculation of melanoma B16-F10 cells into the hind paw of C57BL/6 mice.

Background: The frequency of accidental spider bites in Brazil is growing, and poisoning due to bites from the spider genus Phoneutria nigriventer is the second most frequent source of such accidents. Novel therapeutic strategy to prevent chemotherapy-induced persistent sensory neuropathy by TRPA1 blockade.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a severe and painful adverse reaction of cancer treatment in patients that is little understood or treated. Cytotoxic drugs that cause CIPN exert their effects by increasing oxidative stress, which activates the ion channel TRPA1 expressed by nociceptors. In this study, we evaluated whether TRPA1 acted as a critical mediator of CIPN by bortezomib or oxaliplatin in a mouse model system.

Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of Aloe saponaria Haw on thermal injury in rats.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: In Brazil, the plant Aloe saponaria Haw, popularly known as "babosa pintadinha", has been empirically used for its potential effect on thermal injury. Because there are no scientific data confirming its popular use, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Aloe saponaria on nociceptive and inflammatory parameters in a rat model of thermal injury.

Identification of the plant steroid α-spinasterol as a novel transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 antagonist with antinociceptive properties.

The transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) receptor is relevant to the perception of noxious information and has been studied as a therapeutic target for the development of new analgesics. The goal of this study was to perform in vivo and in vitro screens to identify novel, efficacious, and safe TRPV1 antagonists isolated from leaves of the medicinal plant Vernonia tweedieana Baker. All of the fractions and the hydroalcoholic extract produced antinociception in mice during the capsaicin test, but the dichloromethane fraction also had antioedematogenic effect.

Involvement of the glutamatergic system in the nociception induced intrathecally for a TRPA1 agonist in rats.

The transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) is expressed in peripheral and spinal terminals of sensory neurons, jointly to the vanilloid receptor (TRPV1). A relevant peripheral role of TRPA1 receptor has been implicated in a variety of processes, including the detection of noxious cold, and diverse painful stimulus, but the functional role of TRPA1 receptor in nociceptive transmission at spinal cord in vivo is poorly known. A Stewart-Treves syndrome of the lower limb.

We report a case of a Stewart-Treves syndrome of the lower limb. The tumor is best described in the upper limb following breast cancer treatment but a small number of cases have arisen in lymphedema of the lower limb. Electrochemotherapy could be useful in the palliative treatment of this lymphangiosarcoma.

Bortezomib and bilateral herpes zoster.

Bortezomib is a proteasome inhibitor that has proven to be a very effective treatment for multiple myeloma. There is considerable debate about the potential for reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (VZV) in patients with multiple myeloma during treatment with bortezomib. This report describes the case of a 70-year-old patient with multiple myeloma that developed bilateral herpes zoster shortly after being treated with bortezomib.

The compound 2-(2-benzofuranyl)-2-imidazoline (2-BFI) is a 2-imidazoline derivative that selectively inhibits the in vitro activity of monoamine oxidase-A and it is also an imidazoline I(2) agonist. However, the antidepressant potential of this compound and its mechanism of action have not been well defined. Although no study has definitively shown that unfocused screening of skin cancer is effective, many campaigns have been organized with the aim of increasing awareness on melanoma risk factors. The objective of this study was to analyse the results of the Skin Cancer Screening Day in Italy during the period 2005-2007, to determine the priorities for melanoma control plans in a Mediterranean country. A total of 5002 patients were screened by dermatologists in 31 cities.

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicans (LSA) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology, characterized by atrophy. We report a case of LSA with frontoparietal distribution, mimicking scleroderma en coup de sabre, causing scarring alopecia. The case was associated with Borrelia infection.

Role of TRPV1 in nociception and edema induced by monosodium urate crystals in rats.

Gout is characterized by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals. Despite being one of the most painful forms of arthritis, gout and the mechanisms responsible for its acute attacks are poorly understood. In the present study, we found that MSU caused dose-related nociception (ED(50) [ie, the necessary dose of MSU to elicit 50% of the response relative to the control value]=0.

Comparison between thyroidectomy and hemithyroidectomy in treatment of single thyroid nodules identified as indeterminate follicular lesions by fine-needle aspiration cytology.

Aim: The objective of this study is to determine the optimal surgical approach for patients undergoing thyroid operation for indeterminate follicular lesions diagnosed by cytology and to evaluate the long-term outcome of patients treated by hemi or total thyroidectomy for these lesions.

Material Of Study: From January 2000 to January 2010, 98 patients having a solitary thyroid nodule with a cytological diagnosis of "indeterminate follicular lesion" were selected retrospectively.

Results: There were 81 women and 17 men with a mean age of 56 years (range: 28-83).
