Identification of patients at high risk for hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy.

Hypocalcemia is a major post-operative complication of total thyroidectomy, causing severe symptoms and increasing hospitalization time. The primary cause is secondary hypo-parathyroidism following damage to, or devascularisation of, one or more parathyroid glands during surgery. Aim of the study was to develop a simple and reliable method for predicting post-operative hypocalcemia in total thyroidectomy patients.

Schwannoma of thyroid bed. A case report and considerations on interdisciplinary collaboration.

Schwannoma of the thyroid bed is extremely rare, but is known to simulate a thyroid nodule. A retrospective review is reported of a 64-year-old female patient with a thyroid nodule who had been submitted to pre-operative fine-needle aspiration biopsy, judged inadequate, following which total thyroidectomy was performed. On histological examination, the nodule (in the thyroid bed) was found to be a schwannoma.

Endoscopic CO2 laser surgery for early glottic cancer in patients who are candidates for radiotherapy: results of a prospective nonrandomized study.

Background: Treatment of early glottic malignancies is controversial, particularly if postoperative endoscopy shows minimal/no residual disease.

Methods: In a prospective nonrandomized study, we performed endoscopic laser surgery with curative intent in 59 patients with early glottic carcinoma presenting for radiotherapy after diagnosis elsewhere by random biopsy or cordal stripping. We analyzed outcomes and residual cancer in the specimen.

Preoperative determination of serum thyroglobulin to identify patients with differentiated thyroid cancer who may present recurrence without increased thyroglobulin.

Thyroglobulin is considered a reliable marker of recurrent disease in patients with well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. However, some patients present recurrence with no increase in serum thyroglobulin. In the attempt to identify patients who might present recurrence with no such sign of the disease, thyroglobulin levels have been determined pre-operatively in 185 consecutive patients scheduled for primary treatment for well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma from June 1997 to May 2002 at the Head and Neck Division of the European Institute of Oncology.

Major surgery in elderly head and neck cancer patients: immediate and long-term surgical results and complication rates.

Background: Evaluation of immediate and long-term surgical results in major surgery for the head and neck tumours in elderly patients and identification of tumour and patient related factors that affect the incidence and severity of surgical and medical complications.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of a series of 24 consecutive patients aged 70 and over with head and neck tumours undergoing extensive surgical resections with reconstruction with/without osseous and/or soft tissue transfer. Phylogenetic relationships of Empetraceae inferred from sequences of chloroplast gene matK and nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS region.

We used sequences of nrDNA ITS and chloroplast gene matK to evaluate the monophyly of Empetrum and Corema and to examine phylogenetic relationships of the Empetraceae. Sequences of these two DNA markers were obtained for 11 plant samples, representing species of Empetrum from both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres, species and subspecies of Corema, and the monotypic Ceratiola. Sequences of four species of Rhododendron were used for rooting purposes.

Alterations in host immunity, inflammation, angiogenesis and metabolism are all prominent clinical features in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Although the origin of the signals and mechanisms underlying these responses are not well understood, their local and systematic nature suggest that squamous cell carcinoma-produced cytokines with proinflammatory and immunoregulatory activity may contribute to the pathogenesis of LSCC. In order to gain a better insight into the roles and relationships of the cytokines, we investigated serum IL-6, IL-10 and IL-12 concentrations in LSCC patients under baseline conditions and after surgery.

A simple, inexpensive system for growing plants with their roots bathed in nutrient mist is described. The aeroponics system uses a spinner from a home humidifier to propel nutrient solution into a polyethylene-lined plywood box atop which plants are supported on plastic light-fixture "egg crating." Success in growing a number of herbaceous and woody species, including nodulated legumes and nonlegumes, is reported.
