More than tears: associations between exposure to chemical agents used by law enforcement and adverse reproductive health outcomes.

Despite routine law enforcement use of chemical agents for crowd control, the reproductive health safety profiles of these products are unknown. Moreover, limited evidence has documented a link between such exposures and adverse reproductive health outcomes including abnormal uterine bleeding and potential pregnancy disruption. This cross-sectional study examined reproductive outcomes in adults with uteri exposed to chemical agents used by law enforcement, more commonly known as "tear gas".

Background: Despite the endorsement of intrauterine device (IUD) use in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) by leading professional organizations and demonstrated acceptance and desirability by AYAs, clinicians may worry about the procedural difficulty of IUD device placement in younger patients.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of first-attempt IUD placement in an AYA population by vaginal delivery (VD) history.

Study Design: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients under 25 years old at reproductive health clinics with an IUD placement attempt between January 1 and August 31, 2017.

Medication abortion and uterine aspiration for undesired pregnancy of unknown location: A retrospective cohort study.

Objective: To compare days to diagnosis of pregnancy location for same-day medication abortion and same-day uterine aspiration with delayed treatment (expectant management) in patients with undesired pregnancy of unknown location (PUL).

Study Design: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a single Planned Parenthood health center in Minnesota. We reviewed electronic health records and included patients presenting for induced abortion diagnosed with PUL (positive high-sensitivity urine pregnancy test and no evidence of intrauterine or extrauterine pregnancy on transvaginal ultrasonography) without symptoms or ultrasonographic imaging concerning for ectopic pregnancy (low risk).

Dietary fatty acids can act as inflammatory stimuli, but it is unknown if they can act as the primary stimuli to induce trained immunity. Society of Family Planning committee consensus on Rh testing in early pregnancy.

Historical evidence that fetal red blood cell (RBC) exposure during early spontaneous or induced abortion can cause maternal Rh sensitization is limited. A close reading of these studies indicates that forgoing Rh immunoglobulin administration before 12weeks gestation is highly unlikely to increase risk of Rh (D) antibody development, and recent studies indicate that fetal RBC exposure during aspiration abortion <12 weeks gestation is below the calculated threshold to cause maternal Rh sensitization, and the amount of fetomaternal hemorrhage during dilation and evacuation procedures up to 18weeks gestation is adequately treated with 100mcg of Rh immunoglobulin. We provide updated recommendations for Rh immunoglobulin administration based on this new evidence.

Myocarditis following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination: call for endomyocardial biopsy.

Acute myocarditis following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination was reported by the European Medicine Agency safety committee as a rare adverse event. We present a case series of three young male patients with suspected acute myocarditis following BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccination including results of endomyocardial biopsies (EMB). Additionally, we analysed EMB of another 21 patients with clinically suspected acute myocarditis following vaccination to determine the pathohistological pattern.

Influenza A is a serious pathogen itself, but often leads to dangerous co-infections in combination with bacterial species such as Streptococcus pyogenes. In comparison to classical biochemical methods, analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in headspace above cultures can enable destruction free monitoring of metabolic processes in vitro. Thus, volatile biomarkers emitted from biological cell cultures and pathogens could serve for monitoring of infection processes in vitro.

Characterization of a subtropical hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmocheyles imbricata) assemblage utilizing shallow water natural and artificial habitats in the Florida Keys.

In order to provide information to better inform management decisions and direct further research, vessel-based visual transects, snorkel transects, and in-water capture techniques were used to characterize hawksbill sea turtles in the shallow marine habitats of a Marine Protected Area (MPA), the Key West National Wildlife Refuge in the Florida Keys. Hawksbills were found in hardbottom and seagrass dominated habitats throughout the Refuge, and on man-made rubble structures in the Northwest Channel near Cottrell Key. Hawksbills captured (N = 82) were exclusively juveniles and subadults with a straight standard carapace length (SSCL) ranging from 21.

Alterations in peripheral blood lymphocyte cytokine expression in obesity.

Obesity is characterized by alterations in immune and inflammatory function. In order to evaluate the potential role of cytokine expression by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in obesity-associated inflammation, we studied serum protein levels and mRNA levels in PBMC of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1beta, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and IL-1Ra in nine lean and 10 obese subjects. Serum IL-1beta was undetectable, IL-1Ra serum levels were elevated, serum levels of TNF-alpha were decreased and serum levels of IL-6 were similar in obese subjects compared to lean subjects, while transcript levels of IL-6, IL-1beta and TNF-alpha, but not IL-1Ra, were decreased in PBMC from obese subjects.

Gastro-gastric fistula in the era of divided Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: strategies for prevention, diagnosis, and management.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) is a mainstay of bariatric surgical therapy. Gastro-gastric fistula (GGF) is an infrequent but potentially serious complication of gastric bypass, and diagnosis may be difficult. We report two patients who underwent RYGBP complicated by development of GGF who nevertheless achieved excellent, durable weight loss.

The present paper initially discusses the possible transitions existing between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and delusional disorder. With respect to the latter, the main focus is on the psychopathological concept of the so-called sensitive delusion of reference. A patient who developed a delusional disorder secondary to PTSD, which had been precipitated by his involvement in a serious auto accident, is then described.

This study investigates the effects of a highly structurized therapy programme made up of different elements of psychotherapy and sociotherapy, conducted in 42 inpatients of a psychiatric hospital. Random testing of the patients was differentiated in respect of the diagnosis of a psychosis, neurosis and disturbed personality. Whereas clearly positive effects were seen in the group of neurotics (measured by means of the Freiburg Personality Inventory test before and after the therapy programme), this did not seem to apply to the group of psychotics.
