Quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI as a promising method for the prediction of breast cancer response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) has been demonstrated mostly in single-center and single-vendor platform studies. This preliminary study reports the initial experience in implementing quantitative breast DCE-MRI in multi-center (MC) and multi-vendor platform (MP) settings to predict NAC response. MRI data, including B mapping, variable flip angle (VFA) measurements of native tissue R (R), and DCE-MRI, were acquired during NAC at three sites using 3T systems with Siemens, Philips, and GE platforms, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • Melanosis in the genitourinary tract is a rare condition characterized by melanin deposition without the presence of melanocytes, as seen in a case of a 74-year-old male with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • Diagnostic procedures revealed numerous unusual lesions in the bladder, and biopsy results showed black pigmentation in the urothelium and stroma, confirming the presence of melanin.
  • The case emphasizes the necessity for further research on bladder and prostate melanosis, underlining its benign nature while also suggesting it should be considered in differential diagnoses for similar lesions.

Objective: To determine whether discontinuation of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) use mitigates THC-associated changes in male reproductive health using a rhesus macaque model of daily THC edible consumption.

Design: Research animal study.

Setting: Research institute environment.

Invasive lobular carcinoma with extracellular mucin (ILCEM) is a rare histologic subtype of breast cancer. Little is known about the pathologic or genomic signatures that distinguish ILCEM from classic invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) or mucinous carcinoma. We studied 17 breast cancers with lobular morphology and extracellular mucin.

Purpose: Safe breast cancer lumpectomies require microscopically clear margins. Real-time margin assessment options are limited, and 20-40% of lumpectomies have positive margins requiring re-excision. The LUM Imaging System previously showed excellent sensitivity and specificity for tumor detection during lumpectomy surgery.

Aims: Perinephric fat invasion (PFI) is a key component of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) staging, but there are limited data pertaining to biopsy tract seeding (BTS) resulting in perirenal tissue involvement [BTS with perinephric fat invasion (BTS-P)].The aim is to correlate clinical outcomes with pathologic stage to determine whether the presence of BTS-P should be considered a criterion to stage RCC as part of the pT3a category in the absence of any other upstaging variables.

Materials And Results: We identified 304 renal biopsies from patients with subsequent nephrectomies for RCC; 33 of the tumours contained PFI.

Context.—: Tumor histology offers a composite view of the genetic, epigenetic, proteomic, and microenvironmental determinants of tumor biology. As a marker of tumor histology, histologic grading has persisted as a highly relevant factor in risk stratification and management of urologic neoplasms (ie, renal cell carcinoma, prostatic adenocarcinoma, and urothelial carcinoma).

Context.—: The 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging manual changed the tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) classification systems of genitourinary malignancies in 2017. However, some of the changes appear not well appreciated or recognized by practicing pathologists.

Background: Obtaining tumor-free margins is critical to prevent recurrence after lumpectomy for breast cancer. Unfortunately, current approaches leave positive margins that require second surgeries in 20-40% of patients. We assessed the LUM Imaging System for real-time, intraoperative detection of residual tumor.

Purpose: Obtaining tumor-free surgical margins is critical to prevent recurrence in breast-conserving surgery but it remains challenging. We assessed the LUM Imaging System for real-time, intraoperative detection of residual tumor.

Methods: Lumpectomy cavity walls and excised specimens of breast cancer lumpectomy patients were assessed with the LUM Imaging System (Lumicell, Inc.

A large percentage of breast cancer patients treated with breast conserving surgery need to undergo multiple surgeries due to positive margins found during post-operative margin assessment. Carcinomas could be removed completely during the initial surgery and additional surgery avoided if positive margins can be determined intraoperatively. Spectrally encoded confocal microscopy (SECM) is a high-speed reflectance confocal microscopy technology that has a potential to rapidly image the entire surgical margin at subcellular resolution and accurately determine margin status intraoperatively.

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) often is a diagnosis determined by exclusion. Distinguishing ICC from other metastatic adenocarcinomas based on histopathologic or immunohistochemical analysis often is difficult and requires an extensive workup. This study aimed to determine whether albumin, whose expression is restricted to the liver, has potential as a biomarker for ICC using a novel and highly sensitive RNA in situ hybridization (ISH) platform.

Tumor associated monocytes/macrophages (MO/MA) are known contributors to the immune-inflammatory cell environment of advanced epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC). The secreted proteome of ascitic MO/MA was examined as an aid to the discovery of novel proteins in EOC that are likely to have biological relevance in the inflammatory pathways of EOC. Ascitic fluid MO/MA were isolated from EOC patients, grown short-term in serum-free media.

Sec9p and Spo20p are two SNAP25 family SNARE proteins specialized for different developmental stages in yeast. Sec9p interacts with Sso1/2p and Snc1/2p to mediate intracellular trafficking between post-Golgi vesicles and the plasma membrane during vegetative growth. Spo20p replaces Sec9p in the generation of prospore membranes during sporulation.
