Article Synopsis
  • * Radiation oncologists must make tailored decisions for patient treatment, but these choices would benefit from more clinical evidence and research.
  • * The article calls for a prospective trial to better understand how different radiation doses affect patient outcomes in primary cutaneous lymphoma treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Research involving human subjects must be assessed by an ethics committee, like the Commission on Ethics and Scientific Integrity at Karl Landsteiner University, which evaluates medical research from faculty and students.
  • Between 2018 and 2023, 520 applications were submitted for review, primarily focusing on oncology, psychology, and surgery; half received a final vote within 5 months.
  • The majority (77%) of evaluations were positive, with a small number of rejections and withdrawals, highlighting the need for ethics committees in addressing research gaps not fully covered by existing laws.

Article Synopsis
  • The combination of pancreatitis, panniculitis, and polyarthritis (PPP) is a rare syndrome linked with pancreatitis or pancreatic cancers, highlighted by a case of a 50-year-old man who experienced worsening polyarthritis and nodules on his legs.
  • Lab tests confirmed pancreatitis, and a dermatological assessment established panniculitis, leading to the diagnosis of PPP.
  • Initial treatments with glucocorticoids and NSAIDs were ineffective, but after performing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to remove blockages in the pancreatic duct, the patient's symptoms improved significantly, emphasizing the need for multidisciplinary awareness and management of this condition.

Background And Objectives: Basal and squamous cell carcinoma (BCC, SCC), collectively referred to as keratinocyte-derived skin cancer (KC), are the most common human cancers worldwide. Surgery is the treatment of choice, but may represent overtreatment in the very elderly. This study aims to address this issue by investigating the life expectancy of patients over 80 years after surgery.

On behalf of the EORTC Cutaneous Lymphoma Tumours Group (EORTC-CLTG) and following up on earlier versions published in 2006 and 2017 this document provides an updated standard for the treatment of mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome (MF/SS). It considers recent relevant publications and treatment options introduced into clinical practice after 2017. Consensus was established among the authors through a series of consecutive consultations in writing and a round of discussion.

Mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome are the most important representatives of the heterogeneous group of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. The diseases are rare and the diagnosis, which always requires a clinical-pathological correlation, is often delayed, especially in early forms of mycosis fungoides. The prognosis of mycosis fungoides depends on its stage and is usually favorable in the early stages.

Aim: Treatment of bacterial soft tissue infections is an essential part of clinical dermatology, and the choice of antibiotic therapy is often empirical. The aim of this longitudinal retrospective study was to evaluate bacterial epidemiology, resistance patterns and antibiotic consumption in a dermatological inpatient ward.

Method: Bacterial isolates and antimicrobial susceptibility testing from a dermatological inpatient ward were recorded retrospectively from 2011 to 2016.

Background: In Europe chlormethine gel is licensed for the management of patients with mycosis fungoides of all stages. However, the optimal regimen regarding frequency and dosing as well as combination and maintenance therapy is not well established.

Methods: Ten experts experienced in research and management of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH region) were asked in written form to report on indication for chlormethine gel, frequency of use, monitoring, concomitant therapies, adverse effects, combination therapies in later stages of the disease, maintenance therapy, and adherence to this therapy for mycosis fungoides.

Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and NRF2 has been proposed as a main regulator of tumor cell malignancy. Still the mechanisms how NRF2 is contributing to melanoma progression are incompletely understood. Here we analyzed the effects of either NRF2 induction or depletion, and we also quantified changes on the whole cell proteome level.

Background: Primary cutaneous lymphomas comprise a heterogeneous group of B-cell and T-cell malignancies which often show an indolent course, but can progress to aggressive disease in a subset of patients. Diagnosis is often delayed owing to clinical and histopathological similarities with benign inflammatory conditions. Especially during early disease, cancer cells are present at relatively low percentages compared with the inflammatory infiltrate, an interplay that is currently only insufficiently understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetes is increasingly leading to serious complications like diabetic foot ulcers, prompting the need for effective treatments that are safe for patients.
  • The phase I/II study, MARSYAS II, is testing a new drug called APOSEC, which is combined with a hydrogel and applied topically, focusing on promoting healing through immune modulation and enhancing blood vessel growth.
  • The trial involves 132 patients and aims to assess the drug’s safety and efficacy over 4 weeks, with wound size reduction as the main measure of success.

Background: Drug survival rates reflect efficacy and safety and may be influenced by the availability of alternative treatment options. Little is known about time-dependent drug survival in psoriasis and the effect of increasing numbers of biologic treatment options.

Objectives: To determine whether drug survival is influenced by the availability of treatment options and by factors such as gender, psoriatic arthritis or previous biologic treatment.

Background: Because of a high risk to develop fatal anaphylaxis, early detection of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-dependent allergy is of particular importance in patients with mastocytosis.

Objective: We examined whether microarray-based screening for allergen-reactive IgE (allergen-chip) is a sensitive and robust approach to detect specific IgE in patients with mastocytosis.

Methods: Sera for 42 patients were analyzed, including 4 with cutaneous mastocytosis, 2 with mastocytosis in the skin, and 36 with systemic mastocytosis.

Background: Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare ulcerating skin disease of unknown etiology, making its coincidence with orthopedic trauma a rare challenge. Patients are at risk of progression of the existing lesions and development of new lesions upon skin injury when surgical procedures are performed. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature of disease unrelated surgery during active pyoderma gangrenosum.

Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL) are a heterogenous group of non-Hodgkin lymphomas arising in the skin. Mycosis fungoides (MF), the most common variant, is characterised by clonal proliferation of skin residing malignant T-cells. Initially appearing with erythematous patches and plaques it follows a chronic course with progression to cutaneous tumours and extracutaneous involvement in some patients.

Background: Survival in mycosis fungoides (MF) is varied and may be poor. The PROCLIPI (PROspective Cutaneous Lymphoma International Prognostic Index) study is a web-based data collection system for early-stage MF with legal data-sharing agreements permitting international collaboration in a rare cancer with complex pathology. Clinicopathological data must be 100% complete and in-built intelligence in the database system ensures accurate staging.
