Article Synopsis
  • The Florida Scrub-Jay, a threatened bird species, serves as a significant model for studying evolution and ecology through extensive individual monitoring and genetic analysis.
  • Researchers created a detailed linkage map with 4,468 SNPs and a chromosome-level genome assembly for the species, totaling 1.33 Gb in length, which includes complete autosomes and sex chromosomes.
  • The high-quality genome assembly, with a BUSCO completeness score of 97.1%, features 17,964 identified protein-coding genes, which equips scientists with valuable resources for exploring the evolutionary dynamics of endangered species.

Incomplete speciation can be leveraged to associate phenotypes with genotypes, thus providing insights into the traits relevant to the reproductive isolation of diverging taxa. We investigate the genetic underpinnings of the phenotypic differences between Sporophila plumbea and Sporophila beltoni. Sporophila beltoni has only recently been described based, most notably, based on differences in bill coloration (yellow vs.

Understanding the genomic consequences of population decline is important for predicting species' vulnerability to intensifying global change. Empirical information about genomic changes in populations in the early stages of decline, especially for those still experiencing immigration, remains scarce. We used 7834 autosomal SNPs and demographic data for 288 Florida scrub jays (; FSJ) sampled in 2000 and 2008 to compare levels of genetic diversity, inbreeding, relatedness, and lengths of runs of homozygosity (ROH) between two subpopulations within dispersal distance of one another but have experienced contrasting demographic trajectories.

Article Synopsis
  • Hybridization concerns arise in zoo populations due to unpedigreed animal exchanges, particularly with species like the Nubian ibex brought into the AZA's Species Survival Program.
  • The study used 26 microsatellite markers to investigate if the imported Nubian ibex were hybrids with domestic goats and other caprine species, as they were smaller than the typical adult SSP Nubian ibex.
  • The researchers suggest that the size difference may be attributed to natural variation in the Nubian ibex's geographic range, while the genetic differentiation of the imported ibex could provide valuable genetic diversity to the managed population.

We report that two young adult patients who were initiated with clozapine for severe psychosis during a hospital-wide gastroenteritis outbreak went into severe shock. Neither patient had troponin elevation. Each required left ventricular assist device support for myocarditis.
