Utility of Thromboelastography in Detecting NOAC-Related Coagulopathy in Traumatic Brain Injury.

Introduction: Novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have gained popularity as a vitamin K antagonist alternative without regular monitoring. There has been an increase in elderly patients on NOACs admitted for traumatic brain injury (TBI). The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of thromboelastography (TEG) in detecting NOAC-related coagulopathy among TBI patients.

Superimposed linear atopic dermatitis treated with dupilumab.

Common polygenic skin disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, may rarely present in a segmental or linear distribution due to cutaneous mosaicism. Only seven cases of superimposed linear atopic dermatitis have been reported to date. Here, we present a child with severe superimposed linear atopic dermatitis and highlight the first successful use of dupilumab in its treatment.

Disseminated coccidioidomycosis in a patient with juvenile idiopathic arthritis receiving infliximab.

Background: Coccidioides immitis is a dimorphic fungus endemic to the arid climates of the Southwest United States, Mexico and parts of Central and South America. Human infection occurs through inhalation of spores with less than half of exposures progressing to a symptomatic state that primarily consists of pulmonary manifestations. Disseminated coccidioidomycosis is exceedingly rare, occurring in fewer than 1 % of symptomatic infections.

Source-gated transistors for order-of-magnitude performance improvements in thin-film digital circuits.

Ultra-large-scale integrated (ULSI) circuits have benefited from successive refinements in device architecture for enormous improvements in speed, power efficiency and areal density. In large-area electronics (LAE), however, the basic building-block, the thin-film field-effect transistor (TFT) has largely remained static. Now, a device concept with fundamentally different operation, the source-gated transistor (SGT) opens the possibility of unprecedented functionality in future low-cost LAE.

Efficiency enhancement of InP nanowire solar cells by surface cleaning.

We demonstrate an efficiency enhancement of an InP nanowire (NW) axial p-n junction solar cell by cleaning the NW surface. NW arrays were grown with in situ HCl etching on an InP substrate patterned by nanoimprint lithography, and the NWs surfaces were cleaned after growth by piranha etching. We find that the postgrowth piranha etching is critical for obtaining a good solar cell performance.

Adolescence extended: implications of new brain research on medicine and policy.

Unlabelled: Last December, the Excellence in Paediatrics conference presented a panel discussion of how new biologic findings from brain imaging cast new light on adolescent development. This study will review this presentation, focusing on the interplay between adolescent development and new brain research findings.

Conclusion: Paediatricians can consider these new insights in both interacting individually with patients and advocating for policies within their communities.

Acute kidney injury due to intravenous bleach injection.

Introduction: Sodium hypochlorite is the active ingredient in bleach, a ubiquitous household disinfectant, and has known toxicities depending on route of exposure and amount. Acute kidney injury due to sodium hypochlorite exposure has never been reported. Patients that did develop nephrotoxicity following bleach exposure did so due to development of other risk factors for kidney injury such as volume depletion or sepsis.

Substance prioritisation for the development of EU Acute Exposure Toxicity Thresholds (AETLs).

The aim of the EU Acute Exposure project, ACUTEX, is to develop a methodology for establishing European Acute Exposure Threshold Levels, EU AETLs, for toxic substances in relation to harm to people by inhalation. The development of AETLs is initially in the context of the risks of major accidents from chemical sites and in particular their regulation through the EU 'Seveso II' Directive. It is intended that AETLs can be used within Member States, where appropriate, to inform decisions on land-use planning and emergency planning.

Training patterns and sports injuries in triathletes.

Sports-related injuries are a significant health problem within Australia, and constitute a national health priority. There is limited Australian research data available on factors that contribute to triathlon injuries, and in particular on how training patterns relate to injury risk. This study examined the association between training patterns and injury in mostly non-elite triathletes.

Etiology of low back pain in athletes.

Low back pain and injury is a common affliction for patients involved in athletic endeavors. For this reason, the health care professional should be cognizant of age-related and sports-specific considerations when evaluating athletes with low back complaints. An elevated index of suspicion with regard to specific etiologies of back pain proves invaluable in order to avoid the misdiagnosis of a more serious problem.

Analysis of carnosine, homocarnosine, and other histidyl derivatives in rat brain.

Isocratic reverse-phase analytical HPLC has been used to examine naturally occurring imidazoles of rat brain. Elution of brain extracts with a phosphate buffer mobile phase from columns packed with Hypersil ODS (5 microns) resulted in good separation of the well-documented brain imidazole-containing dipeptides carnosine and homocarnosine. Measured concentrations corresponded to published values.

In an attempt to clarify the relationship between chronic pain and depression, the authors studied the plasma cortisol response to dexamethasone in a group of 73 consecutive chronic low back pain patients admitted to a pain unit and 34 consecutive patients admitted to an affective disorders unit with the principal diagnosis of primary major depression. In an attempt to unravel the relationship between chronic pain and depression, the authors studied the incidence of depression, alcoholism, and chronic pain in first degree relatives of 100 chronic pain patients with and without depression. A higher incidence of major depression was found in first degree relatives of those patients with depression than those without depression. Familial incidence of alcohol dependence was similar in both groups of patients.

Acceptance of ostomy and the visitor role in a self-help group for ostomy patients.

The helper therapy principle, which underscores the benefits from helping another person, has been relatively unexplored in the self-help movement. This study examined whether persons enrolled in the United Ostomy Association, a self-help group for ostomates, who functioned in a helping role as visitors demonstrated a greater level of acceptance of their ostomy than those persons enrolled in the same group who have not served in the visitor role. Results indicated that visitors' acceptance of their own ostomies was significantly higher than nonvisitors'.
