Background: Lung transplant recipients routinely undergo bronchoscopy, during which bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and transbronchial biopsies are usually obtained. These specimens are typically sent for microbiology, histopathology and cytopathology testing. Cytopathology testing is expensive, and its diagnostic value is questionable.
