Objective: Studies have shown that Emergency Department physicians have little to no training in recognizing and supporting victims of human trafficking despite being uniquely situated to identify and intervene on behalf of these patients. We assessed if screening for human trafficking was being completed by emergency physicians in three Saskatoon emergency departments.

Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients presenting to three Saskatoon emergency departments deemed to potentially be at risk of human trafficking, based on discharge diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic and acute forms of anterior uveitis linked to juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) show different characteristics, with chronic uveitis affecting younger females and acute uveitis predominantly impacting older males with enthesitis.
  • - The study explored a model of JIA-associated uveitis in rats inoculated with a specific peptide (MAA) to analyze its effects on ocular inflammation, arthritis, and inflammatory markers.
  • - Results revealed that all MAA-inoculated rats developed uveitis with specific ocular symptoms, but did not develop arthritis or ANA positivity, and there were no differences in outcomes based on the age or sex of the rats.

In this study, p-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA), an inhibitor of tryptophan hydroxylase (the rate limiting enzyme of serotonin synthesis), was used to reduce serotonin (5HT) levels during early development in zebrafish embryos. One day old dechorionated embryos were treated with 25 μM pCPA for 24h and subsequently rescued. Immunohistological studies using a 5HT antibody confirmed that 5HT neurons in the brain and spinal cord were depleted of transmitter by 2 days post fertilization (dpf).

One of the etiological theories of schizophrenia is dysregulation of the immune system. Autoantibodies specific for the alpha7 subunit of the nicotinic receptor could potentially contribute to the pathophysiology of the disease. In this study, positive antibodies specific for the receptor were found to exist in 23% of the patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (n=21).

Neonatal quinpirole (dopamine D(2)/D(3) agonist) treatment to rats has been shown to increase dopamine D(2) receptor sensitivity throughout the animal's lifetime. Male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were neonatalally treated with quinpirole (1 mg/kg) from postnatal days (P) 1-21 and raised to adulthood. Beginning on P62, rats were administered the atypical antipsychotic olanzapine (2.

This study examines the effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), fluoxetine (PROZAC), on the ontogeny of spontaneous swimming activity (SSA) in developing zebrafish. The development of zebrafish motor behavior consists of four sequential locomotor patterns that develop over 1-5 days post fertilization (dpf), with the final pattern, SSA, established at 4-5 dpf. In stage specific experiments, larvae were exposed to 4.
