Article Synopsis
  • Rejection with acute hemodynamic compromise after heart transplantation (OHT) is uncommon in children but linked to poor survival rates.
  • A study reviewed seven children experiencing severe complications post-transplant who were placed on Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) after conventional treatments failed.
  • Despite significant short-term health issues, ECLS helped restore heart function, and all survivors exhibited good functional status with minimal long-term neurological effects after a median follow-up of nearly 6 years.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the influence of socioeconomic disadvantage on the occurrence of rejection events after cardiac transplants in children in the UK.
  • A cohort of 78 children who underwent transplants from 2001 to 2005 was analyzed, revealing that many came from challenging family social situations.
  • Findings suggest that, contrary to expectations, children from poorer backgrounds did not have a higher risk of transplant rejection, indicating no justification for declining transplant eligibility based on psychosocial factors.
