Methods: We analyzed Emerging Infections Program 2005-2014 surveillance data (9 US states) to determine whether reductions in invasive MRSA incidence (isolated from normally sterile body sites) affected racial disparities in rates. Case classification included hospital-onset (HO, culture >3 days after admission), healthcare-associated community onset (HACO, culture ≤3 days after admission and dialysis, hospitalization, surgery, or long-term care residence within 1 year prior), or community-associated (CA, all others).
The first Oregon case of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1)-producing was reported during November 2013. Epidemiologic investigation revealed only local outpatient medical care and no travel outside Oregon for both the patient and his household contact. Environmental sampling discovered a matching isolate from the patient's household vacuum cleaner, suggesting environmental persistence.

Using mutation accumulation followed by whole-genome sequencing, we found that the mutation rates of three widely diverged commensal Escherichia coli strains differ only by about 50%, suggesting that a rate of 1-2 × 10(-3) mutations per generation per genome is common for this bacterium. Four major forces are postulated to contribute to spontaneous mutations: intrinsic DNA polymerase errors, endogenously induced DNA damage, DNA damage caused by exogenous agents, and the activities of error-prone polymerases.
