There is a notable lack of continuous monitoring of air pollutants in the Global South, especially for measuring chemical composition, due to the high cost of regulatory monitors. Using our previously developed low-cost method to quantify black carbon (BC) in fine particulate matter (PM) by analyzing reflected red light from ambient particle deposits on glass fiber filters, we estimated hourly ambient BC concentrations with filter tapes from beta attenuation monitors (BAMs). BC measurements obtained through this method were validated against a reference aethalometer between August 2 and 23, 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, demonstrating a very strong agreement ( = 0.

Access to high-quality family planning services remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries, resulting in a high burden of unintended pregnancies and adverse health outcomes. We used data from a large randomized controlled trial in the Democratic Republic of Congo to test whether performance-based financing (PBF) can increase the availability, quality, and use of family planning services. Starting at the end of 2016, 30 health zones were randomly assigned to a PBF program, in which health facilities received financing conditional on the quantity and quality of offered services.

The objective of this study was to estimate the retention rate of patients in an ART program and identify the predictors of attrition. This was a historical cohort study of HIV patients who started ART between September 2007 and April 2020, and were followed up on for at least 6 months in nine large-volume sites. Kaplan Meier techniques were used to estimate cumulative retention and attrition probabilities.

This study assessed the sensitivity of the West African climate to varying vegetation fractions. The assessment of a such relationship is critical in understanding the interactions between land surface and atmosphere. Two sets of convection-permitting simulations from the UK Met Office Unified Model at 12 km horizontal resolution covering the monsoon period May-September (MJJAS) were used, one with fixed vegetation fraction (MF-V) and the other with time-varying vegetation fraction (MV-V).

In this work, we use existing particulate matter (PM) data from Dakar, Senegal, satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to evaluate the role of dust transport from the Sahara and PM concentrations and exposure into other administrative districts of Senegal during 2015 and 2016. We also use data from the Ministry of Health to examine spatial and temporal patterns of acute respiratory infections, asthma, bronchitis, and tuberculosis across Senegal with an emphasis on Northern Hemisphere winter December-February, when air quality is poor, and June-August when there is an improvement in air quality. Measurements in Dakar, Senegal, suggest hazardous PM concentrations associated with Saharan dust storms but lower PM concentrations during the summer.

For many patients, a history of tuberculosis is synonymous with disabling sequelae, impaired quality of life, and high morbidity and mortality. This retrospective study reviewed the files of patients hospitalized for sequelae of thoracic tuberculosis during 2017, to assess its various manifestations and their impact on quality of life. Of the 176 patients included, 75 % were aged from 35 to 65 years.

Introduction: PLHA who smoke have twice the never-smoker mortality rate and have an increased risk of developing non-AIDS diseases. The prevalence of tobacco smoking is higher among PLHA than in the general population. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of smoking among PLHA, to describe the clinical and spirometric features of smokers and ex-smokers and to assess their knowledge and attitudes toward smoking.

Background: Medical thoracoscopy (MT) is the gold-standard to investigate unexplained pleural exudates. However, the major prerequisite is an easy pleural access obtained by creating an artificial pneumothorax at the beginning of the procedure which can be a challenge in case of pleural adhesions and make the procedure unsafe. The detection of pleural adhesions prior to MT is necessary.

A newborn 3 hours old newborn presented bilateral eyelid edema with erythema and inflammatory hypertrophy of the palpebral conjunctiva. PCR of the conjunctival swabbing showed the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis DNA. Treatment with erythromycin suspension 125 mg/5 ml was initiated, supplemented by topical application of oxytetracycline ointment 1% and Azyter eye drops.

Introduction: According to global data for 2002, one quarter of new cases of primary bronchopulmonary cancer were non-smokers. We undertook this study with the aim of describing the epidemiological characteristics of non-smokers with primary bronchopulmonary cancer in the Dakar region of Senegal.

Methods: A multicenter descriptive study that included all non-smokers who presented with primary bronchopulmonary cancer between January 1st 2014 and December 31st 2015.

This study aimed to determine the radiological features of microscopy-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). We conducted a retrospective study, analyzing radiographical imaging of patients with microscopy-positive pulmonary tuberculosis between 15 November 2015 and 15 March 2016. The medical records of 66 patients meeting the inclusion criteria were selected, 81.

Background: Chest ultrasound (CUS) is the gold standard to detect pleural adhesions before pleural maneuvers. However, the CUS technique is not available in all countries where the assessment is only based on clinical examination and chest radiography.

Objective: To assess the value of lateral decubitus chest radiography (LDCR) to detect pleural adhesions.

Single and multiple variable regression analyses were conducted using data from stratified, cluster sample design, iodine surveys in India, Ghana, and Senegal to identify factors associated with urinary iodine concentration (UIC) among women of reproductive age (WRA) at the national and sub-national level. Subjects were survey household respondents, typically WRA. For all three countries, UIC was significantly different ( < 0.

Regression analyses of data from stratified, cluster sample, household iodine surveys in Bangladesh, India, Ghana and Senegal were conducted to identify factors associated with household access to adequately iodised salt. For all countries, in single variable analyses, household salt iodine was significantly different ( < 0.05) between strata (geographic areas with representative data, defined by survey design), and significantly higher ( < 0.

Progress of national Universal Salt Iodization (USI) strategies is typically assessed by household coverage of adequately iodized salt and median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in spot urine collections. However, household coverage does not inform on the iodized salt used in preparation of processed foods outside homes, nor does the total UIC reflect the portion of population iodine intake attributable to the USI strategy. This study used data from three population-representative surveys of women of reproductive age (WRA) in Kenya, Senegal and India to develop and illustrate a new approach to apportion the population UIC levels by the principal dietary sources of iodine intake, namely native iodine, iodine in processed food salt and iodine in household salt.

Introduction: The long diagnostic delay is responsible for the extension of radiological lesions and spread of TB in the community. These radiological lesions can leave significant scars responsible for respiratory disability.

Objective: The aim of the study is to characterize radiologic features according to tuberculosis diagnostic delay.
