Objectives: Asymmetric or unilateral hearing loss (AHL) may cause irreversible changes in the processing of acoustic signals in the auditory system. We aim to provide a comprehensive view of the auditory processing abilities for subjects with acquired AHL, and to examine the influence of AHL on speech perception under difficult conditions, and on auditory temporal and intensity processing.

Design: We examined peripheral and central auditory functions for 25 subjects with AHL resulting from vestibular schwannoma, and compared them to those from 24 normal-hearing controls that were matched with the AHL subjects in mean age and hearing thresholds in the healthy ear.

Introduction: Aging negatively influences the structure of the human brain including the white matter. The objective of our study was to identify, using fixel-based morphometry, the age induced changes in the pathways connecting several regions of the central auditory system (inferior colliculus, Heschl's gyrus, planum temporale) and the pathways connecting these structures with parts of the limbic system (anterior insula, hippocampus and amygdala). In addition, we were interested in the extent to which the integrity of these pathways is influenced by hearing loss and tinnitus.

The use of knowledge from technetium radiochemistry (even from nuclear medicine applications) allows us to select an sorbent for Tc radionuclide sorption, which is hydroxyapatite. Using radioisotope indication, the TcO₄ sorption process on synthetic hydroxyapatite was studied by the batch method in the presence of SnCl and FeSO reducing agents. The complexing organic ligands' effect on the TcO₄ sorption under reducing conditions was investigated.

Presbycusis and tinnitus are the two most common hearing related pathologies. Although both of these conditions presumably originate in the inner ear, there are several reports concerning their central components. Interestingly, the onset of presbycusis coincides with the highest occurrence of tinnitus.

The LIM homeodomain transcription factor ISL1 is essential for the different aspects of neuronal development and maintenance. In order to study the role of ISL1 in the auditory system, we generated a transgenic mouse () expressing under the promoter control. We previously reported a progressive age-related decline in hearing and abnormalities in the inner ear, medial olivocochlear system, and auditory midbrain of these mice.

Deteriorated speech comprehension is a common manifestation of the age-related decline of auditory functions (presbycusis). It could be assumed that when presbycusis is accompanied by tinnitus, general hearing functions, and particularly comprehension of speech in quiet and speech in noise (SIN), will be significantly affected. In this study, speech comprehension ability and other parameters of auditory function were assessed in elderly subjects with (T, = 25) and without (NT, = 26) tinnitus, aiming for examination of both peripheral and central auditory processing.

Multifunctional effects of flavonoids are reported to be markedly connected with their structure and the functional groups in the molecule. The important role in the activity play C2-C3 double bond, hydroxyl group at C3 and the number of hydroxyl groups at phenyl ring (B). In this paper, the DNA protective free radical scavenging potential of quercetin (QU) and luteolin (LU) against H2O2 and their clastogenic effect alone and in combination with melphalan (MH) were investigated in human melanoma HMB-2 cells.

We investigated protective effects of four flavonoids against H2O2- induced DNA damage in human myelogenous leukemia cells (K562) using the comet assay. The structural difference of studied flavonoids -- quercetin, rutin, luteolin and apigenin -- are characterized by the number of hydroxyl groups on the B ring. The presence of an o-dihydroxy structure on the B-ring confers a higher degree of stability to the flavonoid phenoxyl radicals by participating in electron delocalization and is, therefore, an important determinant for antioxidative potential.

Ursolic acid and oleanolic acid are pentacyclic triterpenoic acids having a similar chemical structure and are the major components of some oriental and traditional medicine herbs wildly distributed all over the world. There is a growing interest in the elucidation of the biological roles of both these triterpenoid compounds. This review summarizes the biological activities of presented triterpenoid acids (anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, gastroprotective, anti-ulcer, anti-HIV, cardiovascular, hypolipidemic, antiatherosclerotic and immunoregulatory effects).
