Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the presence of CTX-M-type ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Indonesian medical students, given their frequent contact with healthcare settings.
  • Out of 207 students, 79 (56.0%) were found to carry ESBL-producing strains, predominantly E. coli, with the bla gene being the most common.
  • The research indicated that these antibiotic-resistant bacteria might be spread in universities and local communities, emphasizing a potential contagion risk among medical students.

Mostly, bla is found on transferable plasmids as a component of the bla transposition unit containing an insertion sequence, ISEcp1, which exists on the upstream region of blas. Several recent studies conducted in clinical and community settings have reported the presence of chromosomally located bla in extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacterial isolates. In this study, we observed the frequency and molecular nature of the ISEcp1-mediated transposition of bla from a plasmid to a chromosome by using an experimental strain of Escherichia coli.
