Purpose: To clarify whether diffusion-weighted imaging using stretched exponential model can assess cerebrovascular reserve (CVR) in patients with major cerebral artery steno-occlusive disease, we compared stretched exponential parameters and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).
Methods: Twenty-nine patients with unilateral major cerebral artery steno-occlusive disease (25 men and 4 women; age, 69±11 years) were analyzed in this study. The patients were divided into three groups: normal CVR (CVR≥30%), moderate CVR (10%≤CVR<30%), and severe CVR (CVR<10%).
Purpose: To determine the usefulness of T1 values measured using a phase-sensitive inversion recovery (PSIR) sequence for the diagnosis of focal liver lesions.
Method: The study enrolled 87 patients who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessment of 38 hepatocellular carcinomas, 33 hepatic hemangiomas, 30 metastatic liver tumors, and 14 hepatic cysts. PSIR was performed before and 15 min after contrast agent administration, and then the respective T1 values were measured and the T1 reduction rate was calculated.
In ten families with late-onset ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency in male patients, three mutant alleles-R40H, R277W, and Y55D-were identified. In a total of 20 informative parent-offspring pairs, father-to-daughter transmission and mother-to-offspring transmission occurred in five (25%) and 15 (75%), respectively, indicating that paternal transmission contributes substantially to the pool of these mutant alleles. Relative reproductive fitness of males and females carrying the mutant alleles was calculated to be 0.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe complete 41,268 bp nucleotide sequence of the IncP-1beta plasmid pBP136 from the human pathogen Bordetella pertussis, the primary aetiological agent of whooping cough, was determined and analysed. This plasmid carried a total of 46 ORFs: 44 ORFs corresponding to the genes in the conserved IncP-1beta backbone, and 2 ORFs similar to the XF1596 and XF1597 genes with unknown function of the plant pathogen Xylella fastidiosa. Interestingly, pBP136 had no accessory genes carrying genetic traits such as antibiotic or mercury resistance and/or xenobiotic degradation.

To avoid the toxicity of drugs used for the transplantation and the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), the authors performed allogeneic bone marrow HSC transplantation with a combination of CD34 selection and T-cell depletion in a LBW infant with X-linked SCID. The authors analyzed the process of T-cell reconstitution after the transplantation in this patient.
