Identification of prognostic factors and surgical indications for metastatic gastric cancer.

Background: The treatment of metastatic gastric cancer is not uniform, and the prognostic factors and indications for surgery are currently unclear. This retrospective study aimed to identify the prognostic factors and clinical indications for surgery in patients with metastatic gastric cancer.

Methods: A total of 123 consecutive patients with gastric cancer and synchronous distant metastasis treated between January 1999 and December 2011 were reviewed.

Hyaluronic acid-carboxycellulose membrane (Seprafilm) reduces early postoperative small bowel obstruction in gastrointestinal surgery.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of sodium hyaluronate and carboxymethylcellulose membrane (Seprafilm) on early postoperative small bowel obstruction (EPSBO). It also examined whether using Seprafilm affected surgical site infection rates in gastrointestinal surgery. One hundred eighty-four patients who had Seprafilm placed during gastrointestinal surgery between October 2000 and December 2003 were included in the study (Seprafilm group) and were compared with a matched cohort (control group) of patients operated on without Seprafilm.
