Acute arterial hemorrhage is a damaging and sometimes lethal complication that occurs in patients with head and neck cancer. However, achieving hemostasis can be challenging because of the difficulty in applying pressure in the throat and oral cavity. In this context, endovascular treatment (ET) has been performed in recent years.

Article Synopsis
  • Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is a rare and aggressive type of cancer, and a study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a drug called lenvatinib in patients whose cancer could not be surgically removed.
  • The study involved 52 patients, with 42 being eligible for analysis, revealing a low 1-year overall survival rate of 11.9% and limited response rates; however, some patients did experience stable disease and durable responses.
  • Despite the high rate of adverse effects experienced by patients, the results suggest lenvatinib may still benefit a select group of patients, indicating the need for further research to identify who could be the best candidates for this treatment.

A facile and reliable fluorescence method for the quantification of urinary uracil concentration is proposed herein. The assay utilizes a specific fluorescence (FL) derivatization reaction for uracil using 3-methylbenzamidoxime as a fluorogenic reagent. Although the presence of urine inhibited the FL reaction, 10 µL of urine was sufficient for the detection of urinary uracil.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is considered a safe procedure, but it causes massive neck swelling and airway obstruction rarely. Neck swelling after FNAC is caused by two mechanisms: by hematoma or by release of vasodilator substances in thyroid cells and nerve terminals. The latter condition was previously reported as an acute and frightening swelling of the thyroid, but is not named appropriately.

Background: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is a rare and extremely aggressive malignancy, with a median survival of less than 6 months due to rapid progression and resistance to multimodal therapies. Effective treatment strategies have not been identified. A prospective clinical study was performed to objectively evaluate outcomes of treatment with paclitaxel.

Among 95 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss who received inpatient treatment at our hospital within the 27-month period between October 2009 and December 2011, those in whom hearing loss was aggravated after diagnosis were compared with a control group. Hearing loss aggravation was defined as a decrease by 10 dB or more in the mean hearing threshold at 5 frequencies from 250 to 4,000 Hz or decrease of 15 dB or more in the hearing threshold at 2 consecutive frequencies. Hearing loss was aggravated after diagnosis in 22 (23.
