Background: This study aimed to investigate the association between a new biomarker that incorporates albumin (Alb) and butyrylcholinesterase (BCHE) levels, as well as the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatectomy.
Methods: The study enrolled 1712 patients who underwent primary hepatectomy for HCC between January 2003 and December 2019 at seven institutions belonging to the Hiroshima Surgical Study Group of Clinical Oncology. The entire dataset was randomly split into discovery and validation cohorts in a 7:3 ratio.
Residual pancreatic endocrine function is important for maintaining metabolic status after pancreatectomy and is closely related to patient nutritional status and prognosis. In contrast to insulin secretion, the significance of glucagon secretion following pancreatectomy remains unclear. In this study, we assessed the changes in pancreatic glucagon secretion during pancreatectomy to determine their pathophysiological significance.

A 73-year-old male was diagnosed with cervical-upper thoracic esophageal cancer and esophago-bronchial fistula on CT and esophagogastroduodenoscopy. He underwent chemotherapy containing pembrolizumab.

A small proportion of pancreaticoduodenal artery (PDA) aneurysms are caused by compression of the CA by the MAL. Here, we report a case of rupture of a PDA aneurysm associated with MALS that was treated with coil embolization followed by MAL resection.

Ischemic necrosis of the gastric remnant is a rare but serious complication of DG that requires careful consideration for early diagnosis and treatment to lower the associated mortality rate. A 71-year-old male presented to our hospital with hyperglycemia and was evaluated for suspected diabetes.

A 71-year-old man presented to our hospital because of abdominal bloating. Diagnoses of early-stage pancreatic body cancer with pancreatic duct rupture, pancreatic ascites, and formation of a pseudocyst were made on the basis of blood tests, multidetector dynamic computed tomography, endoscopic ultrasonography, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.

Strict candidate selection is crucial to achieve optimal results in this population. This study explored postoperative outcomes and developed a preoperative predictive formula to identify patients most likely to benefit from liver resection.

Case Presentation: A 59-year-old man with alcoholic cirrhosis was admitted to our emergency department with a chief complaint of impaired consciousness.
To decrease complications associated with the treatment of coeliac axis (CA) stenosis due to median arcuate ligament (MAL) syndrome in pancreaticoduodenectomy, we performed combined preoperative endovascular stenting and intraoperative MAL resection. This technique can secure the CA blood flow to the hepatic artery before surgery in one stage and prevent CA restenosis and stent dislocation because there is no extrinsic compression of the CA after MAL resection.

Various preventive treatments have been tried; however, there are no clinical trials that use posthepatectomy liver failure as the primary endpoint, and the clinical effects of posthepatectomy liver failure have not been fully verified. The aim of this study was to investigate whether administration of antithrombin III can prevent posthepatectomy liver failure in patients with coagulopathy after hepatectomy.

Laparoscopic colorectal surgery is widely used to approach colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term outcomes in octogenarians who underwent laparoscopic colorectal surgery for colorectal cancer.

Although programmed death (PD)-1 inhibitors, including nivolumab, have promising anti-cancer effects, there is limited information regarding markers that can predict these therapeutic effects, which include PD-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and the tumor mutation burden. Therefore, we evaluated whether the baseline psoas muscle mass index (PMI, a surrogate for skeletal muscle mass) could predict the response of GC to nivolumab treatment, based on progression-free survival (PFS), the objective response rate, and the disease control rate.

A 72-year-old man suffered from a fever and rectal stenosis after undergoing internal hemorrhoid treatment with a submucosal injection of ALTA at a previous clinic. Three months after ALTA therapy, he developed frequent mucous and bloody stools.

Case Presentation: A 49-year-old female suffered from a fever and rectal ulcer after undergoing internal hemorrhoid treatment with a submucosal ALTA injection at a previous clinic.
Background: The permissible liver resection rate for preventing posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) remains unclear. We aimed to develop a novel PHLF-predicting model and to strategize hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Methods: This retrospective study included 335 HCC patients who underwent anatomical hepatectomy at eight institutions between 2013 and 2017.
Introduction: We report the case of characteristic findings of appendicular endometriosis that presented as a submucosal tumor in the cecum without any abdominal symptoms treated with single-incision laparoscopic ileocolectomy.
Presentation Of Case: The patient was a 51-year-old woman (body mass index: 21.5) who underwent an examination to investigate the cause of a positive fecal occult blood test.
Background: Laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) has evolved as a safe and effective alternative to conventional open liver resection (OLR) for malignant lesions. However, LLR in cirrhotic patients remains challenging. This study analyzed the perioperative and oncological outcomes of LLR for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cirrhosis compared with OLR using propensity score matching.

Presentation Of Case: A 67-year-old man was referred to our hospital one day after starting oral antibiotic treatment for acute appendicitis.
Introduction: Neurofibromas are a characteristic of the autosomal dominant disorder Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), also known as von Recklinghausen's disease. Appendiceal neurofibromas are extremely rare, and low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) have not previously been reported in NF1.
Presentation Of Case: A 62-year-old man with NF1 was scheduled for elective surgical treatment of an asymptomatic, enlarged and diffusely thickened appendix that remained after curative antimicrobial treatment of acute appendicitis.
Introduction: Hemolymphangioma, a rare vascular developmental condition, is characterized by malformed venous and lymphatic components in various proportions. Herein, we report a case of a retroperitoneal cystic tumor in an adult patient.
Presentation Of Case: A 68-year-old man presented to our hospital with complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting.
Introduction: Intestinal obstructions due to appendiceal pathology are rare. Obstructions caused by low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are rarer still.
Presentation Of Case: A 79-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for mechanical small intestinal obstruction.
Introduction: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) occasionally involve formation of fistulas with other adjacent organs. Pancreatobiliary fistulas associated with IPMNs are rare, but affected patients often develop obstructive jaundice and cholangitis.
Presentation Of Case: A 79-year-old man was referred to our hospital for evaluation of abnormal biliary enzymes.
Schwannomas are tumors originating from the Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. Only 1%-3% of schwannomas reportedly occur in the pelvis. In a 67-year-old man, a pelvic mass that was 52 mm in diameter was incidentally diagnosed during a preoperative CT evaluation for prostate cancer.
