Background: Bilateral internal thoracic artery (ITA) grafting is associated with improved long-term outcomes; however, the appropriate graft configuration remains controversial. We compared the long-term outcomes of different graft configurations.

Methods: Between 2009 and 2015, 1171 patients underwent isolated bilateral ITA grafting for left-sided complete revascularization at 4 Japanese cardiac surgery centers: underwent in situ left ITA to the left anterior descending artery plus in situ right ITA to the left circumflex artery (LR group, n = 278), in situ right ITA to the left anterior descending artery plus in situ left ITA to the left circumflex artery (RL group, n = 665), and in situ left ITA to the left anterior descending artery plus free right ITA to the left circumflex artery (free group, n = 228).

Article Synopsis
  • Transmitral myectomy for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy can be performed through minimally invasive approaches, providing an alternative to traditional surgery methods.
  • A new technique involves a longitudinal incision in the midline of the anterior mitral leaflet, allowing for septal myectomy while maintaining easier surgical access.
  • This method simplifies the procedure by avoiding the need for detaching the anterior leaflet and eliminates the use of patch materials, which can compromise the durability of the leaflets.

This study retrospectively evaluated the mid-term outcomes of surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) using a stented porcine aortic valve bioprosthesis (Mosaic; Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, MN, USA) with concomitant mitral valve (MV) repair. From 1999 to 2014, 157 patients (median [interquartile range] age, 75 [70-79] years; 47% women) underwent SAVR with concomitant MV repair (SAVR + MV repair), and 1045 patients (median [interquartile range] age, 76 [70-80] years; 54% women) underwent SAVR only at 10 centers in Japan as part of the long-term multicenter Japan Mosaic valve (J-MOVE) study.

The presence of an annular abscess complicates the operation for infective endocarditis. We report a case of a totally endoscopic repair of a mitral annular abscess using a staged strategy. A 28-year-old woman underwent endoscopic mitral valve repair for active infective endocarditis with Staphylococcus aureus.

Background: The applicability of totally endoscopic surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR) in multivalve operations is unknown. This study describes an approach and perioperative outcomes of totally endoscopic isolated and concomitant AVR using various valve types.

Methods: A total of 216 patients (114 male; mean age, 71.

A left ventricular pseudoaneurysm is a rare complication that can occur after infective endocarditis, possibly leading to serious complications such as cardiac tamponade, rupture and recurrent infective endocarditis. We report a case of a totally-endoscopic repair of a pseudoaneurysm after endoscopic mitral valve repair. A 48-year-old woman underwent endoscopic mitral valve repair for active infective endocarditis.

Compost is used worldwide as a soil conditioner for crops, but its functions have still been explored. Here, the omics profiles of carrots were investigated, as a root vegetable plant model, in a field amended with compost fermented with thermophilic Bacillaceae for growth and quality indices. Exposure to compost significantly increased the productivity, antioxidant activity, color, and taste of the carrot root and altered the soil bacterial composition with the levels of characteristic metabolites of the leaf, root, and soil.

Spontaneous mutations are stochastic phenomena that occur in every population. However, deleterious mutated allele present in seeds distributed to farmers must be detected and removed. Here, we eliminated undesirable mutations from the parent population in one generation through a strategy based on next-generation sequencing (NGS).

Sutureless offers an alternative to standard valves in surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). We sought to confirm the efficacy and safety of the Perceval sutureless valve in Japanese patients. Prospective observational study of 204 patients who underwent SAVR with Perceval at 19 sites in Japan between March and December 2019.

Objectives: Some pathologies, including infective endocarditis or sclerotic changes of the mitral leaflet, make the conventional mitral valve repair challenging. Our previously described technique for reconstruction with a seamless pericardial patch makes the repair feasible in some of such difficult pathologies. However, the extent of mitral leaflet segments that could be safely repaired using this technique remains unknown.

In mammals, primordial germ cells (PGCs) enter meiosis and differentiate into primary oocytes in embryonic ovaries. Previously, we demonstrated that meiotic gene induction and meiotic initiation were impaired in female germline cells of conditional knockout (CKO) mice lacking the Smarcb1 (Snf5) gene, which encodes a core subunit of the switching defective/sucrose non-fermenting (SWI/SNF) complex. In this study, we classified meiotic genes expressed at lower levels in Snf5 CKO females into two groups based on promoter accessibility.

Mitral valve repair for endocarditis in an acute setting is still challenging due to difficulties in debriding friable tissue and in leaving enough non-infected tissue for reconstruction. Endoscopic approaches for complex mitral valve procedures via a minimally invasive approach have been reported from high-volume programs. However, the role of endoscopic mitral valve surgery for acute infective endocarditis has not been clearly defined.

Aggregation of flying insects such as gypsy moths at commercial light sources in summer not only has an aesthetically negative impact on public facilities but also permits the establishment of new insect populations there from the next year. Although energy-efficient light traps equipped with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have recently been used for controlling pest insects in agriculture, there are very few maintenance-free light traps that are available on the market. Based on the results of field surveys, we fabricated a prototype light trap in which the preferences of insects for light irradiation angle and wavelength are implemented.

The Dlk1-Dio3 imprinted domain is controlled by an imprinting control region (ICR) called IG-DMR that is hypomethylated on the maternal allele and hypermethylated on the paternal allele. Although several genetic mutation experiments have shown that IG-DMR is essential for imprinting control of the domain, how DNA methylation itself functions has not been elucidated. Here, we performed both gain and loss of DNA methylation experiments targeting IG-DMR by transiently introducing CRISPR/Cas9 based-targeted DNA methylation editing tools along with one guide RNA into mouse ES cells.

Papillary fibroelastoma (PFE) is a cardiac tumor that is mainly found on the heart valve and the endocardium of the atria and ventricles. Symptoms such as stroke and myocardial infarction are usually caused by embolization of either the tumor itself or associated thrombus. PFE is known to originate mainly from the left side of the heart, and these cases are-in principle-candidates for surgical resection.

Sexual reproduction involves the creation of sex-dependent gametes, oocytes and sperm. In mammals, sexually dimorphic differentiation commences in the primordial germ cells (PGCs) in embryonic gonads; PGCs in ovaries and testes differentiate into meiotic primary oocytes and mitotically quiescent prospermatogonia, respectively. Here, we show that the transition from PGCs to sex-specific germ cells was abrogated in conditional knockout mice carrying a null mutation of Smarcb1 (also known as Snf5) gene, which encodes a core subunit of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex.

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery is commonly used to treat degenerative mitral regurgitation. The totally endoscopic approach has emerged as an attractive alternative procedure especially for young patients and has been described in isolated mitral and aortic valve settings. The totally endoscopic double valve procedure, including mitral and aortic valves, extends this treatment option to a broader patient population.

Background: Phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling participates in cellular proliferation, survival and tumorigenesis. The activation of AKT signaling promotes the cellular reprogramming including generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and dedifferentiation of primordial germ cells (PGCs). Previous studies suggested that AKT promotes reprogramming by activating proliferation and glycolysis.
